BEHAVIOR CHANGE THEORY<br />

It is instructive <strong>to</strong> note <strong>the</strong> correspondence between <strong>the</strong> TTM elements used in <strong>the</strong><br />

various treatment letters and those recommended in <strong>the</strong> traffic safety literature over <strong>the</strong><br />

past half century. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recommended elements were represented in <strong>the</strong> treatments<br />

evaluated, but <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five that were not recommended, self-reevaluation was used in<br />

only 10 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cases and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r four, social liberation, stimulus control,<br />

counter conditioning, and self liberation were not used in any treatment letter. A<br />

summary is provided below.<br />
