FROM THE DIRECTOR & THE PRESIDENT 

Dear Friends, 

We are pleased to present this report on the work of the UC Davis 

Arboretum during fi scal year 2006-07. This has been a banner year for the 

Arboretum. We have worked hard to implement the goals and objectives 

of our Ten-Year Plan 2002-12, and have had some remarkable successes. 

Most notably, we have launched the UC Davis Arboretum GATEways Project 

(Gardens, Art, and The Environment) with striking additions to the garden, 

exciting new outreach programs, and academic partnerships with campus 

educators and researchers. We continue to build our world-class plant 

collections and are recognized as national leaders in digital collections 

management. 

The Arboretum’s excellence rests on the strength of its community 

support. We are profoundly grateful to our members, volunteers, donors, and 

advocates, whose active assistance and encouragement is a fundamental 

component of our success. We hope you are pleased with our progress and 

will continue to play a vital role in the future of our Arboretum.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2006-07 

In the Garden 

• Our centerpiece project this year was a 

major renovation of the Arboretum 

Terrace Garden, our home 

demonstration garden for California’s 

Central Valley. With generous support 

from Lois and John Crowe, we added 

new fountains, pergolas, lighting, and 

decorative paving. Staff and volunteers 

redesigned the plantings, container 

displays, signage, and plant labels to 

compliment the beautiful new additions. 

The Lois Crowe Patio was dedicated in 

May at a gala reception, with talks by UC Davis 

Provost Virginia Hinshaw, Davis City Council 

Member Don Saylor, garden designer Michael 

Glassman, Arboretum Director Kathleen Socolofsky, 

and the Crowes. 

• The Arboretum was enhanced with the addition of 

a stunning large-scale ceramic mosaic mural 

of an oak tree (and the birds, mammals, and 

insects associated with it) on the restroom building 

at Shields Grove, and a charming painted mural 

picturing the ladybug life cycle on the tunnel under 

the A Street bridge, both created by students in 

the Art/Science Fusion Program and community 

volunteers. 

• Staff and volunteers added new plantings in the 

Mary Wattis Brown Garden, Mrak Hall Area, White 

Flower Garden, Redwood Grove, Mediterranean 

Section, and Southwest U.S. Section. 

• With generous support from Dr. Eric 

Conn, we began a renovation 

of the Eric Conn Acacia 

Grove, installing a new irrigation 

system and a winding path, and 

planting the creek banks with native 

grasses. Staff are searching out 

and propagating dozens of acacia 

species to add to the grove. In 

addition to their scientifi c interest, 

the acacias will be tested for 

horticultural value under Central 

Valley conditions.

• Staff collaborated with researchers 

from the UC Davis Wildlife 

Museum on an ongoing study of 

wildlife in the Arboretum. We 

developed a preliminary adaptive 

management plan for the heronry 

at the Shields Oak Grove, where 

skyrocketing numbers of nesting 

birds threaten the health of our most important 

scientifi c collection. We experimented with noninvasive 

methods to discourage nesting: removing 

remnants of last year’s nests and fl ying mylar 

balloons during the birds’ “prospecting” period. 

We also installed mulch under heavily birdoccupied 

trees to mitigate the effect of guano on 

soil chemistry. 

• Special funding from the campus Buildings and 

Grounds Division supported major pruning of 

trees throughout the Arboretum.

UC Davis Arboretum GATEways Project 

(Gardens, Art, and The Environment) 

The Arboretum GATEways Project is a transformative new model for a university garden. It envisions the 

Arboretum as an open gate, inviting the public in to learn about UC Davis research and teaching. This year 

we introduced a range of new educational and interpretive programs to support the GATEways mission. 

• Our new horticultural education program focuses 

on Valley-wise gardening—the best plants and practices 

for California’s Central Valley. This program builds on the 

Arboretum All-Stars, our recommended plants for regional 

gardens. Staff and volunteers developed a series of 

interpretive exhibits for the Storer Garden and orientation 

and wayfi nding signs for the Storer Garden, the White 

Flower Garden and Gazebo, the Redbud Collection, and 

the Acacia Grove; installed 180 new plant labels at the 

Arboretum Terrace and more than 500 in the Storer Garden; 

created changing signs to highlight seasonal changes, 

plant-wildlife interactions, and projects in the garden; and 

published the fi rst two of a series of four seasonal articles 

about Central Valley gardening in Pacifi c Horticulture 

magazine. Docent tours, education tables at plant sales, and 

outreach programs at community events reinforced the Valleywise 

gardening message. 

• As part of our commitment to bring the expertise of UC Davis 

to the public, Arboretum Director Kathleen Socolofsky led 

the committee that established the new California Center 

for Urban Horticulture, in cooperation with the College 

of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES). During 

the past year, the committee secured start-up funding from 

the CA&ES Dean’s Offi ce and the Plant Sciences Dept., 

conducted a national search for the founding director of the 

Center, and hired Dr. David Fujino for the position.

and goldenrod attract adult beneficial insects, 

adding beauty and function to your garden.

• Young people and their families 

enjoyed a great new series of Arboretum 

Adventures. University faculty, graduate 

students, and researchers generously shared their 

expertise with Arboretum visitors through handson 

explorations of local wildlife, traditional native 

plant knowledge and cultural practices, and 

landscape geography. 

• To reach people who use the Arboretum for 

recreation, we initiated several new health 

and wellness programs. We partnered with 

campus health services to create the Aggies on 

the Move walking program for university staff—the 

kickoff event registered 670 people. 

• Gardens are an artistic medium and a wonderful 

setting for experiencing art. This year we 

launched some exciting new arts programs, 

including a botanical watercolor course, naturethemed 

outdoor theatre performances, the Writers 

in the Garden series of readings, and biweekly 

folk music jam sessions.

• Working with Arboretum plants and 

landscape, students in Robin Hill’s 

environmental art class used brilliant yellow 

fall foliage to create a site-specifi c art 

project called “The Ripple Effect.” 

• Through the Art/Science Fusion Program, 

Diane Ullman’s entomology students 

created murals featuring plants and their 

associated insects for the A Street bridge 

and the West End restroom, and Gale 

Okumura’s design students created fi eld 

guides to those projects. 

• Student leadership 

development is an important 

aspect of the GATEways 

project. We worked with Joyce 

Gutstein and the Science Education 

Outreach Program to create the 

Arboretum Ambassadors 

program, in which student interns 

created public education projects 

and helped staff outreach events. 

Arboretum staff taught a Leadership 

Exploration Seminar for incoming 

freshman students and mentored a 

Career Discovery Group in Leadership 

through the College of Agricultural 

and Environmental Sciences. 

Student Partners Create 

Visitor Experiences 

As part of the Arboretum GATEways 

Project, we developed partnerships with several 

faculty members to create opportunities for 

UC Davis students to learn about the Arboretum 

and help develop innovative learning 

experiences for Arboretum visitors. 

• UC Davis and the Arboretum came to national 

prominence when another mosaic mural, featuring 

plants and insects of the Storer Garden, traveled 

to the U.S. Botanical Garden on the Capitol 

Mall in Washington, D.C., where it was seen by 

hundreds of thousands of visitors as part of an 

exhibit on the contributions of public gardens. 

The mural, created by students in the Art/Science 

Fusion Program, community members, Arboretum 

volunteers and staff, will return to the Arboretum 

for permanent installation. 

• Several classes generated ideas and prototypes 

for Arboretum interpretive projects. Tim McNeil’s 

design students worked on a wayfi nding 

signage system for the Arboretum’s east end; 

Glenda Drew’s web design class experimented 

with interactive maps of the gardens; and Julie 

Wyman’s technocultural studies students created 

video podcasts.

Academic and professional connections 

• Arboretum Director Kathleen Socolofsky was 

awarded the 2007 APGA Professional 

Citation by the American Public Gardens 

Association (APGA), one of the highest awards 

in the fi eld of public horticulture. Kathleen was 

recognized for her demonstrated mastery of 

strategic thinking, leadership, and management 

at the Arboretum and her successful launch of 

multiple new initiatives at UC Davis. 

• In recognition of its 

signifi cant scientifi c value, 

the Arboretum’s oak 

collection was accepted 

for inclusion in the North 

American Plant 

Collections Consortium 

(NAPCC), a program 

of the American Public 

Gardens Association in 

cooperation with the U.S. 

Department of Agriculture 

and the U.S. National 

Arboretum. Institutions 

that hold recognized collections must pledge 

to maintain and develop them according to the 

highest professional standard of management. 

NAPCC collection holders make germplasm 

available for evaluation, taxonomic studies, 

selection and breeding, and research. 

• Arboretum staff cooperated with faculty in 

Plant Sciences on research 

on propagation protocols 

for native plants and testing 

Arboretum All-Star plant species 

under Central Valley conditions. 

• The Arboretum provided training 

and hands-on experience 

for 33 student employees and 

34 student interns, who worked 

in the nursery, gardening, 

landscape maintenance, 

collections management, and 

education.

• Arboretum curatorial staff assumed national 

leadership in digital collections management. 

With major support from the Institute of Museum 

and Library Services and ESRI, we developed 

a prototype geodatabase data model and map 

interface for botanical collections. Curatorial 

staff completed fi eld mapping of the Arboretum’s 

plant collections (except the demonstration 

gardens)—recording coordinates for more than 

10,000 individual plant locations. The project 

was recognized with the Best Instructional 

Presentation award at the 2007 ESRI International 

User Conference, a gathering of 14,500 GIS 

(geographic information system) experts from 

around the world.


Building Our Capacity 

• Twenty-eight new volunteers went through 

the training program and joined the gardening, 

nursery, education, and curatorial crews. More 

than 100 volunteers work regular weekly shifts 

at the Arboretum, supporting our mission in 

every area of operations. 

• The Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum held 

membership drives in conjunction with plant 

sales, adding 210 new members. The Friends 

board conducted a very successful annual 

appeal, writing several hundred personal 

notes to accompany the mailing. Members 

responded by donating $30,395 (in addition 

to their membership fees) to support garden 

development and education programs. 

Donors also made contributions to support 

individual gardens, collections or programs, 

or to dedicate benches in honor of people 

important to them. 

• Nursery staff and volunteers grew more 

than 1,000 different kinds of great plants 

for Central Valley gardens and held six very 

successful plant sales during the year, 

raising more than $100,000. 

• We received grants totalling more than 

$540,000 from federal agencies, private 

foundations, and UC funds.

• In recognition of the Arboretum’s 

ground-breaking work in outreach and 

community engagement, the Offi ce of 

the Provost provided special project 

funding for several GATEways pilot 

projects. These include a refl ective 

garden honoring California’s 

indigenous people, and especially the 

Patwin people whose ancestral home 

encompassed the site of the Arboretum; 

the Art/Science Fusion Program, a 

series of innovative courses that teach 

science through the practice of art; and 

the design for a teaching landscape 

for the new Watershed Science and 

Geology building, which will be located 

adjacent to the Arboretum, west of the 

Law School. This support helps position 

the Arboretum for success and sets the 

direction for our future development.
