meet tHe DireCtOrs
Dr. Lisa a. BiLLingham (Conductor, University Chorale), Associate Professor
of Choral Music Education at George Mason University, conducts the University
Chorale and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in choral
music education. She is the co-advisor for the GMU student chapters of
American Choral Directors Association and Music Educators National
Conference. She is the President of the Virginia Chapter of the American
Choral Directors Association and is a planning committee member for the
Annual Voices United Conference hosted by Virginia, Maryland-D.C., and
Delaware chapters of ACDA.
Dr. Billingham’s research interests include the incorporation of Laban
Movement Theory in conducting pedagogy and the choral rehearsal.
She is a Certified Laban Movement Analyst from the Integrated Movement
Studies Program at the University of Utah and incorporates that theory
with her private conducting students. Dr. Billingham is active as a clinician
for conferences and choirs throughout the United States and Europe.
She has presented for ACDA, VMEA, two Regional ACDA conferences,
and at the International Society for Music Education (ISME) Conference in
Bologna, Italy.
Dr. Billingham holds a DMA in Choral Conducting from the
University of Arizona, an MM in Choral Conducting from the University of
Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and a BME in Choral Music
Education from Indiana University (Bloomington). Her conducting mentors
include Bruce Chamberlain, Eph Ehly, James Jordan, Maurice Skones, and
Volker Hempfling.
CJ reDDen-Liotta is graduate assistant to Dr. Lisa A. Billingham and the
University Chorale (80+ voices).
A graduate of the University of North Texas, Mr. Redden-Liotta has
been an active professional musician in the Washington, DC area for the
past 10 years. As a conductor, he is the Artistic Director of the chamber
chorus Second Wind, the Musical Director for the Woodbridge Community
Chorus, and served as Music Director and Conductor for the Repertory
Opera Theatre of Washington.
Mr. Redden-Liotta has performed with many ensembles, including
the critically acclaimed University of North Texas Jazz Singers, the
Woodley Ensemble, National Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of
the Professional Core of the Washington Master Chorale. As soloist he has

performed in several capacities, including the world premiere and recording
of the Requiem by Paul Leavitt, and the East Coast premiere of Eternal
Light: A Requiem by British composer Howard Goodall. Additonally, he
maintains both a private voice studio and is a teaching artist at the Capitol
Hill Arts Workshop.
Mr. Redden-Liotta is pursuing his Masters of Music degree in Choral
Conducting at George Mason University and is an active member of the
American Choral Directors Association.
Prof. mary ann east teaches music education classes and conducts the
Select Women’s Chorale at George Mason University.
Professor East has taught every level of music for Fairfax County
Public Schools; the last six were as Choral Director at George C. Marshall
High School. In addition to her duties at GMU, Professor East is the Music
Director at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston where she coordinates
the music for weekly worship, conducts the UUCR Singers vocal
choir and the UUCR Ringers, handbell and handchime choir.
While at George Mason University pursuing her MM in Vocal
Performance and Choral Conducting, Professor East performed in several
GMU Opera Theatre productions. She sang the roles of Suor Dolcina in
Suor Angelica, Violetta in Act I scene I of La Traviata, Cathleen in Riders
to the Sea, and Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. In the summer of
2009 she began her studies for a DMA in Music Education through Boston
University and founded the Virginia Girls’ Chorus.
She has also adjudicated and guest conducted throughout the state
of Virginia.
