children’s arrival, answered questions that children had concerning completion <strong>of</strong> the survey, had<br />

children sign their child assent form, and walked the children through the first story, answering<br />

any questions that they might have about how to complete each story. <strong>The</strong> children completed<br />

the remaining three stories on their own, while the principal investigator stood by to address any<br />

concerns expressed by the children.<br />

Between September and December, 2009, 158 children enrolled in the 5 th grade at either<br />

a public or private school in the South completed the CBVS. Surveys were administered to<br />

groups <strong>of</strong> children in their respective schools. Each child’s teacher completed a questionnaire<br />

about the participating child’s social behavior with peers and about the child’s tendency to either<br />

bully or to be victimized. <strong>The</strong> sample <strong>of</strong> children was predominantly European American/White<br />

(n=120, 75.9%), but also included Hispanic (n=8, 5.1%), Asian Americans (n=7, 4.4%), African<br />

Americans/Blacks (n=13, 8.2%), and other ethnic groups (n=10, 6.3%). Information about<br />

socioeconomic status was not collected from these children. See Table 1.<br />
