Coding Scheme for the CBVS<br />

ACTION CODES<br />

1. Positive Actions: Assertive, Intervene, Empathy, Teaching<br />

Positive Assertive Responses / Behavior / Advice<br />

• Verbally challenge the bully’s statement. Label the bully’s action as a misdeed.<br />

Example: “BJ is stupid” Responses “No, BJ is not stupid” “BJ is actually very<br />

smart” “How would you know?”<br />

Example “You’re an idiot!” Responses “That hurts my feelings.” “Picking on<br />

others is never okay!”<br />

• Talk with the bully about the reasons for the bullying to better understand the motivations<br />

<strong>of</strong> the bully.<br />

Example “Kim is such a loser”. Responses “Why are you saying that?” “What has she<br />

done to you to make you say that?”<br />

• Be confident and polite. Look the bully in the eye. Firmly say “leave me alone” or<br />

“Stop! I don’t like what you are doing.”<br />

• Protest bullying: • Refuses to join bullying • Not join the club<br />

• Stops being friends with bullies<br />

• Self-Regulated Behavioral Strategies for the victim<br />

• Give a good come-back line when the victim is calm and assertive.<br />

• Confront bullies only when the threat is not physical<br />

• Try distracting bully by engaging him or her in different conversation <strong>of</strong> interest to the<br />

bully<br />

• Rehearse appropriate social interaction that solves problems & gives victim a sense <strong>of</strong><br />

power, confidence and control.<br />

• When attacks are physical, learn a defensive strategy (e.g., boxing, martial arts, etc.)<br />

• Tell the victim not to become a bully too, just because you’ve been picked on.<br />

• Role reversal – consider being the victim – how does it feel to be the victim?<br />

• Get involved in another activity or a diversion<br />

• Avoid the bullies • Change location • Sit somewhere else<br />

• Walk away • Don’t hang with jerks • Ignore it<br />

• Stay on task • Act like everybody else • Seek self help<br />

• Beware <strong>of</strong> groups and adults for safety. • Diffuse the attack with humor<br />

• Go early or late & in different ways that are safe. • Participate in another activity<br />

• Write in a journal • Self comfort – positive self-talk<br />

• Get friend who will listen • Get friend to confront the bullies<br />
