(c) the appointment <strong>of</strong> the Corporation’s <strong>of</strong>ficers; the creation <strong>of</strong> a Committee<br />
and a general court to carry out the business <strong>of</strong> the Corporation;<br />
replacement <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers; proceedings <strong>of</strong> the general court and its powers;<br />
investment and application <strong>of</strong> the Corporation’s funds<br />
(d) appointment <strong>of</strong> a chaplain and licensing <strong>of</strong> such chaplain by the Bishop<br />
(e) treasurer to account for moneys; appeals; civil procedure issues; status <strong>of</strong><br />
this Act.<br />
Philanthropic Society’s Act 1823<br />
9. According to its long title, the purpose <strong>of</strong> the Philanthropic Society’s Act 1823<br />
(“the 1823 Act”) wasfor<br />
enabling the President, Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, and Members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Philanthropic Society to purchase from the Corporation and other Persons<br />
entitled thereto the Lands and Hereditaments in the Parish <strong>of</strong> Saint George<br />
the Martyr, Southwark, in the County <strong>of</strong> Surrey, upon which they have erected<br />
a Chapel, Buildings, and other Works, and such other Land adjoining thereto<br />
as may be required for the Purposes <strong>of</strong> their Charity.<br />
10. The preamble to the 1823 Act recorded that the Corporation (ie the Society)<br />
had leased land in Southwark from the Mayor and Commonalty and Citizens <strong>of</strong> the<br />
City <strong>of</strong> London for the purpose <strong>of</strong> erecting a chapel and other buildings, and had<br />
already completed the building work. However it was thought desirable that the<br />
Corporation should acquire the freehold <strong>of</strong> the land.<br />
11. The 1823 Act provided as follows-<br />
(a) authority for the owners <strong>of</strong> the land to sell it to the Corporation; authority<br />
for the Corporation to meet the cost <strong>of</strong> the purchase by surrendering<br />
other land held by them; conveyancing procedures<br />
(b) authority for the Corporation to sell any land vested in them<br />
(c) status <strong>of</strong> this Act.<br />
Philanthropic Society’s Act 1848<br />
12. According to its long title, the purpose <strong>of</strong> the Philanthropic Society’s Act 1848<br />
(“the 1848 Act”) was-<br />
to enable the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Philanthropic Society to sell and grant Leases <strong>of</strong> the Lands belonging to<br />
them, and to purchase other Lands; and for other Purposes relating to the<br />
said Society.<br />
