including the Fokker Dr.I, the triplane made famous in the hands of aces
such as Manfred von Richthofen. In all, his company delivered about 700
military planes to the German air force.
Conditions: automatic.
Difficulty: die roll 3+.
Enter in play: Events phase, any turn.
Option #1: (historical choice) Air Technologies bonus – All research tests
on Air Technologies will henceforth benefit from a +1 die roll modifier. In
addition, a new “Propaganda” event is generated and shuffled in the
deck.
Notes: once successfully in play, the event is discarded and cannot occur
again.
Estienne/JFC Fuller
Description: Generals Estienne (France) and J.F.C. Fuller (Britain) conduct
assault artillery (Tanks) researchs. This event will bring valuable bonuses
in researchs of tanks technologies.
Historical notes: Major-General John Frederick Charles Fuller was a British
Army officer, military historian and strategist, notable as an early theorist of
modern armoured warfare. During World War I he planned the tank attack
at Cambrai and the tank operations for the autumn offensives of 1918. After
the war he held various leading positions, notably as a commander of an
experimental brigade, but his plan for a fully mechanised army was not
implemented in his lifetime. Jean-Baptiste Eugène Estienne was a French
general of artillery and a specialist in military engineering who in 1915
expressed his belief that an engine of war, mechanically propelled and
protected by armour was the solution to the deadlock on the Western Front.
In spite of General Estienne’s endeavours it was not until the battle of
Cambrai had been fought, in November 1917, that the French Ministry of
Munitions was finally convinced of the value of the tank.
Conditions: automatic.
Difficulty: die roll 3+.
Modifiers: +1 in 1916 or later.
Enter in play: Events phase, any turn.
Option #1: (historical choice) Tank bonus – All research tests on tank
technologies made by Britain or France will henceforth benefit from a +1
die roll modifier. In addition tank combat value determination will also
benefit from a +1 die roll bonus. Also, a new “Propaganda” event is
generated and shuffled in the deck.
Notes: once successfully in play, the event is discarded and cannot occur
again.
Technology
194 World War One: La Grande Guerre 1914-1918
Description: This event will give you a valuable bonus on all technological
researches.
Historical notes: Technology during World War I reflected a trend toward
industrialism and the application of mass production methods to weapons
and to the technology of warfare in general. The most dramatic advances
were made in the air where slow rifle armed pusher aircraft made way for
agile fighters mounting forward firing synchronized machine guns, and on
land the first use of the tank would eventually lead to a more mobile
battlefield. By the end of 1917, the major armies were making use of
telephone and wireless communication, forward observers plotted the
creeping barrages for artillery using new techniques for spotting and
ranging, and infantry formations were being reorganized; small squads of
men were becoming the favoured unit of maneuver. Toward the end of the
conflict, aircraft carriers were used for the first time, with HMS Furious
launching Sopwith Camels in a raid against the Zeppelin hangars at
Tondern in 1918.
Conditions: automatic.
Difficulty: die roll 2+.
Enter in play: Events phase, any turn.
Option #1: (historical choice) Major technological advantage – A major
technological research bonus will be granted to the active nation (or AI),
whose research test die rolls will benefit from a +2 modifier during the next
technology phase.
Notes: once successfully in play, the event is discarded and can be later
reshuffled in the deck.
Rohr
Description: Captain Rohr makes the Stosstruppen Tactic advance in
Germany. This event will give you a bonus in technological researches for
Stosstruppen (assault troops).
Historical notes: In September 1915, Captain Rohr was appointed
commander of the Calsow Assault Detachment. Rohr experimented with
assault tactics leading to the development of squadsized stormtroops
(“Sturmtruppen” or “Stosstruppen”), which acted with support of a number
of heavy support weapons and artillery to attack enemy trenches.
Stosstruppen were equipped with lighter footwear, lighter carbines, and
their uniforms had been reinforced with leather patches on knees and
elbows to protect them when crawling. In October 1915, these tactics were
tested for the first time during an assault on a French position in the Vosges
Mountains.
Conditions: not before 1915.
Difficulty: automatic.
