a bigamous marriage with the rich widow of a Bordeaux wine merchant. He
entertained lavishly in Paris and Biarritz, and was received by many
influential people. In 1915 he gained the confidence of the Khedive of
Egypt and got his backing for a scheme to get money from Germany to
promote a campaign for peace in France. By the time of his arrest in
September 1917, he had received some £300,000 from German sources.
He was tried and executed for obtaining money from an enemy in order to
create a pacifist movement in France.
Army Code Breaking
Description: This event will allow you to get a major bonus on Fog of War
restrictions for one Front only. In addition, you will get a valuable bonus on
Rolling Barrage and Gas firings for that front.
Historical notes: Codes and ciphers were used extensively in World War
One. In January 1917, French intelligence intercepted German radio
messages reporting about the activities of a German spy with the code
name H-21. Analyses of the messages revealed that spy H-21 actually was
Mata Hari, a Dutch exotic dancer. Unfortunately, the messages were in a
code that had already been broken by the French, but, remarkably, the
German intelligence had known that this code had been broken.
Consequently, there are rumors that the messages were contrived. Mata
Hari was arrested and executed in October 1917.
