Diplomatic Stratagems
Diplomacy
Description: This event will give you a bonus in reinforcements of new
diplomats during the next turn. The amount of new ambassadors will be
randomly determined.
Historical notes: Our efforts in training young civil servants for the
requirements of the foreign service have proven successful: a new
generation of excellent political representatives takes office.
Conditions: automatic.
Difficulty: die roll 3+.
Enter in play: Events phase, any turn.
Option #1: (historical choice) New Ambassadors incoming – Next turn the
active nation will receive a random number of new ambassadors as
reinforcements, spanning from 1 to 3.
Notes: once successfully in play, the event is discarded and can be later
reshuffled in the deck.
Seizure of neutral ships
Description: This event will deteriorate the diplomatic relationships between
the USA and Great Britain.
Historical notes: The Central Powers ability to re-provision themselves
under their own flags was eliminated in the opening days of the conflict,
forcing the transfer of sea-borne trade into neutral shipping and the routing
of supply through neutral ports. In an attempt to reduce this trade both
the British and French governments issued new and more rigorous
interpretations of contraband, adding greatly to the list of contraband goods
that could be seized on the high seas.
Conditions: Great Britain must be at war.
Difficulty: die roll 4+.
Modifiers: +2 if Great Britain has adopted the political action “Neutrals
Blockade”.
Enter in play: Events phase, any turn.
Option #1: (historical choice) British Fleet seizes neutral ships – the US
diplomatic level is shifted by 1 step towards the Central Powers.
182 World War One: La Grande Guerre 1914-1918
Notes: once successfully in play, the event is discarded and cannot occur
again. A mandatory event card corresponding to this stratagem is present
in the deck
Right of Passage
Description: This event will give you a right of passage throughout one of
the following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria or Rumania.
Historical notes: For small European countries not belonging to one of the
major factions it was difficult to survive the war. Instead of trying to stay
strictly neutral, it was sometimes necessary to sacrifice territorial integrity
to avoid being conquered.
Conditions: automatic.
Difficulty: die roll 4+.
Enter in play: Military phase, any turn.
Option #1: (historical choice) Belgium grants the Right of Passage –
Belgium will grant the Right of Passage to your side for 2 turns, also
providing the supply support for 6 (six) turns.
Option #2: Bulgaria grants the Right of Passage – Bulgaria will grant the
Right of Passage to your side for 2 turns, also providing the supply support
for 6 (six) turns.
Option #3: Rumania grants the Right of Passage – Rumania will grant the
Right of Passage to your side for 2 turns, also providing the supply support
for 6 (six) turns.
Notes: once successfully in play, the event is discarded and can later be
reshuffled in the deck.
Entente declares war on Belgium
Description: This event will make the Entente (France) declare war on
Belgium.
Historical notes: Realizing that the German Empire used the neutral
Belgium as a line of defense, it was decided to invite Belgium to join the
Entente. However, the Belgian government declined this offer. This
convinced the Entente that Belgium was just a marionette of Germany,
and, consequently, war was declared on Belgium.
Conditions: Great Britain is at war against the Central Powers and Belgium
is neutral.
Difficulty: die roll 5+.
Enter in play: Events phase, any turn.
Option #1: (historical choice) War on Belgium – The Entente declares war
on Belgium.
