The fourteen points of President Wilson
Description: This event will bring the USA closer to the intervention!
Historical notes: In January 1918, Woodrow Wilson, President of the U.S.,
listed ‘Fourteen Points’ in a speech in the U.S. Congress, explicitly stating
the aims of the U.S. to assure the country that the war was being fought for
a moral cause and for peace in Europe after World War One. Although the
common people of Europe welcomed Wilson as a hero, other leaders of the
Entente remained sceptical of his idealism. The fourteen points were the
only explicit statement of all war aims by any of the nations actively
participating in World War One.
Conditions: the USA are at war against the Central Powers and the event
“Wilson elected president of USA” has successfully occurred.
Difficulty: automatic.
Enter in play: end of Events phase, from ‘Early August 1914’ (turn 1) to the
end of the war, provided the condition is met.
Notes: once successfully in play, the event is discarded and cannot occur
again.
Portugal enters the War
Description: This event will make Portugal declares war on Central Powers!
Historical notes: Despite its old alliance with Britain, Portugal did not
form a part of the system of alliances which triggered World War I and
thus kept its neutrality during the first years of war. However Portugal
suffered from the German U-Boat campaign which sought to blockade
the United Kingdom, at the time the most important market for Portuguese
products, and clashed with German troops in the Portuguese colony
of Angola. In February 1916, after complying with a British request to
confiscate German ships anchored in Portuguese ports Germany
declared war.
Conditions: automatic.
Difficulty: die roll 4+.
Modifiers: +2 if Great Britain is at war.
Japan enters the War
Description: This event will make Japan declares war on Central Powers!
Historical notes: On August 15th, 1914, following a request for naval
assistance by the British Government, under the terms of the
Anglo-Japanese Alliance, in destroying German raiders in and around
Chinese waters, Japan sent Germany an ultimatum demanding the
removal of all German ships from Japanese and Chinese waters and the
surrender of control of the disputed port of Tsingtao. When Germany failed
to respond, Japan declared war.
Conditions: automatic.
Seizure of neutral ships
Description: This event will deteriorate the diplomatic relationships between
the USA and Great Britain.
Historical notes: The Central Powers ability to re-provision themselves
under their own flags was eliminated in the opening days of the conflict,
forcing the transfer of sea-borne trade into neutral shipping and the routing
of supply through neutral ports. In an attempt to reduce this trade both
the British and French governments issued new and more rigorous
interpretations of contraband, adding greatly to the list of contraband goods
that could be seized on the high seas.
Conditions: Great Britain must be at war.
Difficulty: die roll 4+.
Modifiers: +2 if Great Britain has adopted the political action “Neutrals
Blockade”.
Enter in play: Events phase, any turn.
