marches through the Syrian Desert where roving government units known
as the “Special Organization” were permitted to abuse and kill the
defenseless people. The death marches during the Armenian Genocide,
involving over a million Armenians, covered hundreds of miles and lasted
months. An estimated 75 percent of the Armenians on these marches
perished. Warnings from the Allied Powers that the Ottoman Government
would be held responsible for the deaths had no effect. Armenian survivors
settled in provinces of the former Russian Empire. In May 1918, Turkish
armies attacked but were finally repelled at the battle of Sardarabad,
saving the remaining population from total extermination. Following that
victory, Armenian leaders declared the establishment of the independent
Republic of Armenia.
Conditions: Turkey must be at war against the Entente.
Difficulty: automatic.
Enter in play: end of the Interphase, only during ‘August 1916’ (turn 11),
provided the condition is met.
Option #1: (historical choice) Genocide – Turkey looses 5 NW points.
again.
Enver Pasha ‘the little Napoleon’
Description: event will force Turkey to perform a minimum number of
offensives per turn. If not respected, Turkey will suffer a national morale
loss.
Historical notes: Enver Pasha was a Turkish military officer and a leader of
the Young Turk revolution. In 1914 Enver assumed command of the
Ottoman forces arrayed against the Russians in the Caucasus theatre. He
aimed to encircle the Russians, force them out of Ottoman territory and
take back Kars and Batumi, which had been ceded after the Russo-Turkish
War of 1877–78. Ignoring the opposition of senior Turkish commanders
Enver’s December assault, know as the Battle of Sarikamis, lost
momentum after several days and his inadequately prepared forces were
forced back, thousands dying from the harsh cold in the subsequent
retreat.
Conditions: Turkey must be at war against the Entente.
Difficulty: automatic.
Enter in play: end of the Events phase, from during ‘Early August 1914’
(turn 1), provided the condition is met.
Option #1: (historical choice) Remind Enver Pasha obstinacy – just a
reminder, nothing happens except for the need for Turkey to perform at
least two offensives every 12 months.
Notes: If Turkey does not perform at least two offensives every 12 months,
she will suffer a 5 NW points loss.
2nd Army and sent to the Caucasus where he mounted a successful
USA Commercial submarine ‘Deutschland’ arrives in Baltimore
Description: This event will allow Germany either to improve her
diplomatic relationships with the USA or to grab some economic aid from
the United States!
Historical notes: The Deutschland had been built in 1916 to counter Britain’s
naval blockade which had hindered Germany’s war efforts substantially.
The submarine was intended to travel to the neutral United States selling
goods in exchange for vital raw materials. Deutschland’s third journey,
planned for January 1917, was aborted when the U.S. abruptly entered the
war and the German Imperial Navy converted Deutschland to a submarine
cruiser. In three cruises, Deutschland was subsequently credited with
sinking 43 ships, becoming a British war trophy in December 1918.
Conditions: automatic.
Difficulty: die roll 3+.
Modifiers: -1 if Germany adopted the political action “Submarine Warfare”,
-1 if Germany adopted the political action “Unrestricted Submarine
Warfare” (cumulative with the previous one), +1 if Great Britain declared
the “Blockade”.
Enter in play: end of Events phase, from ‘May 1916’ (turn 17) to the end of
the war.
