range of long waves. Slow, but ideal for underwater communications. 1 letter/30<br />

G P S : Global Positioning System. An NVSTAR type satellite locates the exact<br />
position. GNS: Global Navigation System: On-board computer keeps the ship on<br />
course with the help of GPS.<br />
H F : High Frequency. Short wave. Almost unusable below water.<br />
H UL L POPPING : Sound made by the hull’s expansion while surfacing.<br />
HYD RO PH ONE : Underwater directional microphone for the passive<br />
positioning of sound.<br />
K E E L : Lower edge of the boat. Iron ballast.<br />
K N O T S : Measure of speed in nautical miles per hour.<br />
L O FA R : Low Frequency Analyzing and Recording. A technology to represent<br />
tones of the lower frequency band on the screens of modern sonar devices.<br />
NAU TICAL MI LE: Approximately 1.8 kilometers<br />
N A X O S : Radar warning device.<br />
N E G AT IVE BO OST: Slight sinking position. Angle of attack 10-15<br />
degrees.<br />
O B A : Oxygen Breathing Apparatus. Portable system that chemically creates<br />
oxygen for approximately 30 minutes.<br />
R A D A R : Radio Detection and Ranging. Locating device using focused waves<br />
in the centimeter region. The waves are emitted from a sender and reflected by<br />
an object as with the SONAR. The echo is displayed on a screen.<br />
R A M : Radar Absorbing Material. Coating which absorbs, rather than reflects<br />
any radar signals (stealth technology).<br />
R E A R : Back part of the boat.<br />
SI LENT RUNN IN G: The ship runs with minimal sound to avoid being<br />
located, .e.g. when being pursued by another submarine vessel. Low speed, no<br />
unnecessary activities.<br />
S I N S : Ships Inertial Navigational System.<br />
Records all the ship’s movements and thus points to its current location<br />
(orientation system).<br />
S O N A R : Sound Navigation and Ranging. Underwater equivalent of RADAR.<br />
Reacts to sound signals and their echoes. A passive SONAR receives sound<br />
signals from the object, an active SONAR emits a "ping" and waits for its echo.<br />
S O S U S : Sound Surveillance System. A number of passive sonar probes,<br />
established by the NATO as an early warning system. Currently used for<br />
scientific purposes.<br />
TA SK FO RCE : Operational organization.<br />
TA SK GRO UP : A mission team (subdivision) of the Task Force.<br />
T D U : Trash Disposal Unit. Torpedo tube used to dispose of weighted down<br />
waste containers.<br />
TM A: "Target Motion Analysis" to find out the course and speed of the<br />
contact object. Battleships lay in a zigzag course while performing the analysis.<br />
TUB E DIVI NG: Slang expression for torpedo tube check-ups. (In<br />
AquaNox, robots or ROVs - Remotely Operated Vehicles - perform these!)<br />
V L F : Very Low Frequency. See ELF.<br />

A Q U ATIC APE<br />
Scientists believe an aquatic hominid originated in the Danakil Mountains of<br />
eastern Ethiopia. About 3-5 million years ago, a seawater flood seems to have<br />
cut off a family of hominidae living there from the rest of East Africa. Evolution<br />
then slowly turned these hominidae into sea mammals.<br />
A R G U M E N T S : A layer of fat merged with the skin, extremely thick even<br />
on lean specimens (isolates body heat).<br />
Sweat and tears contain extraordinary amounts of salt. Excretion of excess salt.<br />
Breathing: Human beings are the only mammals (excepting sea mammals and<br />

Diving reflex: Respiratory organs close automatically. Bronchial tubes and the<br />

Very old unicellular organisms without a cell nucleus. Two thirds of their genome<br />
is completely different from the genome of all other creatures on this planet.<br />
They are so-called extremophiles, creatures that only feel at ease in an extreme<br />
environment. Four billion years ago, they probably created the origin of all life<br />
near the hot hydrothermal vents.<br />
