272 If large goods vehicles are using your site, you need to make routes wide
enough for them to manoeuvre safely and to pass each other with room to spare
wherever possible. For more information about how large vehicles move, you
should read the Freight Transport Association publication Designing for Deliveries. 8
273 You should also remember that working on a slope will change how well a
vehicle is able to manoeuvre, usually meaning more space is needed.
25 m
10.6 m
274 You should consider the height of vehicles (and their loads) that are operating
on your site. You should then use this information to make decisions about how
much overhead space they need to move around and work safely.
275 There is no maximum height for road vehicles in the UK, but they tend to be
less than 4.5 m tall. One exception to this is tipper vehicles, which can be much
taller than this when they are raised and need a lot of clearance overhead to do
this. There is more information about tipping safely in the chapter Tipping. When
they are driving normally, tipper vehicles are usually shorter than 4.5 m.
276 You should measure and record the vertical clearance under overhead
obstructions on routes. The measurement should take account of any
underhanging lighting, ventilation or other service features, which are often added
after the initial design.
