Health and Safety Executive seat restraint a restraint intended to keep a vehicle operator or passenger in their seat. segregation separation of two things, in particular pedestrians and vehicles. semi-trailer the freight-carrying rear section of an articulated goods vehicle combination. split coupling the practice of connecting the suzie hoses before coupling the tractive unit to the semi-trailer of an articulated goods vehicle combination, usually because the combination is ‘close-coupled’. A safe system of work has to be identified for every aspect of work that an organisation does, to make sure that people are able to work safely. It should be the result of a thorough risk assessment, which identifies what could harm people and how, so that these risks can be managed. The safe system should usually be written down so that workers can be instructed and their performance can be monitored. tailgate the rear door of a load-carrying vehicle. TCU see temperature-controlled unit. temperature-controlled unit (TCU) an insulated container, often a semi-trailer, with a temperature-control mechanism for the benefit of loads that must be maintained at a certain temperature during transit. three-point hold rule a person should keep at least three points of contact with the vehicle they are climbing (with their hands and feet), moving one limb at a time and testing the new hold before moving on. tipping slang for unloading, as well as referring to vehicles with tipping load bodies, and the use of these vehicles. traffic the movement of people and/or vehicles (often called pedestrian traffic or vehicular traffic). tractive unit the powered unit of a vehicle and trailer combination. tractor unit a widely used term for the powered unit of an articulated goods vehicle combination. Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) VOSA is the merger of the Vehicle Inspectorate and the Traffic Area Network division of the Department for Transport. The aim of the agency is to contribute to the improvement of the road safety and environmental standards, and to the reduction of vehicle crime. vibratory discharge system a system for discharging bulk powders from containers such as silos or tankers, which vibrates the powder, causing it to flow more freely. wander lead a control device for a tail lift, allowing the operator to move away from the vehicle during the lifting operation. workplace any location where a person is working. Public roads are public places and are covered by specific laws, so deciding when they are (or are not) workplaces can be complicated. work-restraint system a fall-prevention system, which relies upon personal protective equipment (consisting of a harness and a lanyard), which is adjusted or set to a fixed length that physically prevents the person from getting to the place where they could fall.
