stub an area next to a road, intended to give drivers more room to manoeuvre.<br />

system of work a way of doing a task. A safe system of work has to be identified<br />

for every aspect of work that an organisation does, to make sure that people are<br />

able to work safely. It should be the result of a thorough risk assessment, which<br />

identifies what could harm people and how, so that these risks can be managed.<br />

The safe system should usually be written down so that workers can be instructed<br />

and their performance can be monitored.<br />

TCU see temperature-controlled unit.<br />

temperature-controlled unit (TCU) an insulated container, often a semi-trailer,<br />

with a temperature-control mechanism for the benefit of loads that must be<br />

maintained at a certain temperature during transit.<br />

three-point hold rule a person should keep at least three points of contact with<br />

the vehicle they are climbing (with their hands and feet), moving one limb at a time<br />

and testing the new hold before moving on.<br />

tipping slang for unloading, as well as referring to vehicles with tipping load<br />

bodies, and the use of these vehicles.<br />

traffic the movement of people and/or vehicles (often called pedestrian traffic or<br />

vehicular traffic).<br />

tractive unit the powered unit of a vehicle and trailer combination.<br />

tractor unit a widely used term for the powered unit of an articulated goods<br />

vehicle combination. See also tractive unit.<br />
