Executive<br />
ACOP Approved Code of Practice. <strong>An</strong> ACOP published by the Health and Safety<br />
Commission has a special legal status. It demonstrates behaviour that should be<br />
followed to meet regulatory provisions.<br />
articulated used to identify a vehicle with a jointed body. Many types of vehicle<br />
can be articulated, such as lift trucks or construction site dumpers. The term is<br />
often used, however, to refer to articulated goods vehicle combinations. See also<br />
artic.<br />
ATV all-terrain vehicle. ATVs are often ‘quad bike’ type, although a variety of<br />
designs are used in workplaces in Great Britain.<br />
baffle an intermediate partial bulkhead that reduces the surge effect in a partially<br />
loaded tank. See also bulkhead.<br />
baler a machine used to compress and bind materials (often agricultural or waste<br />
materials) for storage and shipment.<br />
banksman a worker who <strong>guide</strong>s a vehicle driver using signals.<br />
barn doors a twin set of doors hinged on the outside.<br />
bulk solid solid, particulate materials <strong>transport</strong>ed in bulk form, such as some<br />
grains, or mineral aggregate.<br />
bulkhead a vertical partition in a load area. The bulkhead often describes the<br />
forward limit of the load area, and is often close to the rear of the cab.<br />
cable lift a method for raising demountable containers onto <strong>transport</strong> vehicles, by<br />
means of a winch and cable.<br />
camber the curvature of a road surface. The camber is measured as the height<br />
difference between one edge of the road and the centre.<br />
CCTV closed circuit television.<br />
close-coupled some types of vehicle are coupled with relatively little space<br />
between the tractive unit cab and the front of the trailer. ‘Reefer’ temperature<br />
controlled units are a good example, where the refrigeration equipment is often<br />
located in the usually empty area between the cab and trailer. See split coupling.<br />
curtainsider a haulage vehicle with fabric sides on the load body, which are<br />
moved aside to allow access to the load down the sides of the vehicle.<br />
competent person a competent person is somebody who has enough<br />
knowledge, experience and personal ability, and who has received enough training<br />
and information, to do a task safely and well. It may also mean a person chosen by<br />
the employer to carry out thorough examinations based on their level of knowledge<br />
of the equipment, problems and their causes, methods of testing and diagnosing<br />
faults.<br />
demountable a load container that can be detached and removed from the<br />
carrying vehicle, such as a skip or a shipping container.<br />
