an optical printer. This results in a faster<br />
turnaround time and less manipulation of<br />
the original historic film.<br />
But the new film transport is not the end<br />
of the ARRISCAN archive story. Our goal<br />
is to develop the ARRISCAN into a device<br />
that is able to scan 100% of all existing<br />
film material, not stopping at the difficult<br />
bits and pieces. That’s why ARRI has designed<br />
new hardware options that can transform<br />
any industry-standard ARRI SCAN<br />
into the ultimate tool for tackling the<br />
challenges of archive material.<br />
Even severely damaged and shrunken film<br />
can be scanned with standard ARRISCAN<br />
film transport<br />
New Sprocketless Transport System<br />
Hope for hopeless cases – an entirely new<br />
sprocketless transport system started to<br />
evolve in early 2009. Beginning with a<br />
working prototype system we undertook the<br />
scanning of several 110-year-old Lumière<br />
perforated films for the Italian restoration<br />
specialists L'Immagine Ritrovata. The success<br />
of this project not only convinced L' Immagine<br />
Ritrovata to get an ARRISCAN Archive themselves,<br />
but also inspired us to continue developing<br />
this powerful tool.<br />
The final product will be shown for first time<br />
at NAB 2010: it is a modular transport that<br />

Standard ARRISCAN sprockets have<br />
up to 3.5 % of shrinkage tolerance<br />
Exchangeable sprocketless<br />
transport system<br />
can be exchanged between normal sprocket<br />
transport and a sprocketless version in less<br />
than one minute. Unperforated or badly damaged<br />
material, which up until now could not<br />
have scanned on any machine in the world,<br />
can now be digitized in perfect quality.<br />
Unlike the capstan transport of telecine-style<br />
scanners, framing can be adjusted electronically<br />
without the need of a sprocket or optical<br />
perforation detector.<br />
