It is the end of August, 2009<br />

and the start of a risky experience<br />

with an uncertain ending.<br />

We are departing for Spitsbergen<br />

in search of polar bears –<br />

the most dangerous land-based<br />

predators in the world. Our aim<br />

is to document the ways in which<br />

climate change and global<br />

warming influence the bears’<br />

living environment. We do not<br />

know what kind of unforseen<br />

dangers we might encounter,<br />

or indeed whether we will find<br />

the giant white animals at all.<br />

What we do know is that we can<br />

expect magnificent scenery –<br />

a landscape of unique beauty<br />

and magic, colours of incredible<br />

intensity and conditions that will<br />

challenge us!<br />

In order to appropriately document this<br />

unique story, it was essential to choose<br />

the right equipment. Even more so because<br />

our team consisted of just three individuals:<br />

director Kai Schubert, assistant Daniel<br />

Delbeck and myself. For this reason, the<br />

equipment had to be compact; at the<br />

same time, however, it had to be of a<br />

technical standard that would do justice<br />

to our topic. We decided to use the<br />

ARRIFLEX D-21, with a Zeiss Master Zoom<br />

lens and an SRW-1 unit for recording.<br />

Of course we had to consider the question<br />

of whether, under these circumstances,<br />

the decision to use the D-21 was correct –<br />

whether this system could cope with such
