Organ Donations Decline as
Need Increases
More than 100,000
people need life-saving
organ transplants in
the United States, and
an additional million
need life-saving and
life-improving tissues,
eyes, and corneas.
Yet every day, an
average of 18 people
die because there are
not enough organ
donations to meet the
need, according to the
Organ Procurement
and Transplantation
Network. The seriousness
of the lack of
organ donations has
been highlighted in a
new study conducted
by investigators at
Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center.
Members of the
research team, found
that the number of living
donors increased
yearly from 1999 to
2004, but has been declining
since then. Although
the number of

organ donations from
deceased individuals
risen each year between
1999 and 2007,
the increase was not
sufficient to offset the
decline in living donor
donations.
The fact that
transplantation of
solid organs is now so
successful has actually
made getting an organ
more difficult. “Improved
survival rates
and the expectation
that organ replacement
will enhance
quality of life have
encouraged more doctors
and their patients
with organ failure to
opt for transplantation,”
explains Klein.
Recently, Apple
CEO Steve Jobs,
who had a life-saving
liver transplant last
year, joined forces
with governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger to
help push through
new legislation in
California to expand
the number of organ
donors in that state.
Convincing individuals
to be an organ
donor is a challenge.
Although about 90
percent of Americans
say they support
organ donation, only
30 percent know the
steps that need to be
taken to become a
donor. Several factors
contribute to the public’s
lack of awareness
of the issue and to
organ shortage itself,
as the Cedars-Sinai
researchers note.
Some of those factors
include disincentives
for living organ
donors (e.g., loss of
income while taking
off work, transplantrelated
medical
expenses may not be
covered by the recipient’s
insurance), lack
of understanding by

Whether it’s
lunch at The Bread
Co., Tuesday nights
at BWW, or Goody’s
which is set to open
later this month The
Mansion Mall is once
again a retail hot spot
in the 573, and Jim
Bailey is the man behind
the property being
brought back to life.
It turns out
that the Mansion Mall
could quite possibly
still be blight sitting
at one of the busiest
intersections in the 573
except that it was a
challenge that opened
up at the time Jim
Bailey was looking for
one. “I was looking
for a challenge. I am
always looking for new
things to accomplish,
and when this became
available it made
sense.” said Bailey.
The Mansion
Mall was originally
built in 1970 by the Mc
Lane family of Poplar
Bluff. Many will

remember it was the
original location of one
of the
first
Wal-
Mart
stores.
Wal-
Mart
relocated
to a
new
supercenterseveral
blocks
south

1987.
The
Mansion
Mall
got its
name
from
the old
Mansion
that
occupied the site as a
restaurant throughout
the 1970s.
While it had a
great past the 90’s and
the early part of this
century were unkind
to the property. It was
largely vacant and in
disrepair.
In 2004 the
city began
a process of
taking over
the site of
the Mansion
Mall
and the Valley
Plaza.
Soon after
the city
announced
their intentions
the
property
was sold to
Southern
Missouri
Bank.
The center
was purchased in
2005 by Jim and his
wife Shannon Bailey.
People all over the
area have since seen
the center has be totally
reconstructed and
brought up to today’s
standards. Included
in the massive redevelopment
are new
storm water management,
tuck pointing,
painting, gutters, the
parking lot reshaped
and Asphalted as well
as all new mechanicals,
HVAC, plumbing,
electrical, all new
roofing, new parking
lot lighting, and finally
two new Signs displaying
tenant logos.
The Mansion
Mall isn’t Bailey’s first
commercial development.
It was Bailey
who sold Walgreen’s
the property they are

Heather opened their first
restaurant three years ago
in Kennett and have since
expanded to Poplar Bluff.
The restaurant is family
owned and you can tell it
by how nice and polite the
staff is once you enter.
When you walk into
Porky’s the front door rings the cowbell overhead, and
you have pictures of Poplar Bluff’s past all along the
walls. The décor isn’t complete without checking out
the jukebox.
For starters we enjoyed an appetizer. The fried
mushrooms were outstanding, and we always appreciate
a restaurant with sweet tea. We tried the pork

was spot on.
It is almost
bigger than
the ample
sized plate,
and the
BBQ sauce gave it a great flavor.
The couple we were with had the ribs and
spared us a couple….they were great. In fact
we cleaned ours right to the bone.
We asked about the sauce and we were told
it was a family recipe and had won several
awards. It is not too sweet, just about right.
While the entrée was remarkable the sides
were just as good. They simply have the
best potato salad we had ever eaten. It is
creamy and you literally have never tasted
anything like it. For dessert we ordered some
peach cobbler, and although we were full and
shouldn’t have even ordered it….we finished it.
Everyone knows folks in the 573 love their BBQ, and
all those that do should definitely put Porky’s on their
list of must stops soon.

Ed Pavey of Ozark Dive Company

2006, Pavey’s Ozark Dive
Company, at 204 North
Tenth Street in Poplar Bluff,
teaches diving classes, leads
expeditions and sells all the
necessary equipment for an
underwater adventure.
Pavey began diving at age 9,
when his grandfather bought him
a mask, fins and a snorkel to use
on fishing trips in Minnesota.
“My first dives were to the
bottom of the lake to get my
grandfather’s lost lures,” Pavey
said.
Now, Pavey teaches first-time
and potential divers out of the
classroom in his shop and at local
pools. After the divers have mastered
the basic skills, they plunge
into the surrounding area’s caves,
quarries and springs. Ozark Dive
Shop employee Heidi McMullin
said Mermet Springs in Southern
Illinois is a favored spot for firsttime
divers. Other local diving
hot spots include Wappapello
Lake and Keener Springs.
Pavey recommends novice
divers be comfortable in the
water before taking his classes,
but said they don’t have to be
strong swimmers. Pavey said
he’s even
helped
those with
fears of
the water
overcome
anxieties
by learning
to dive.
“You don’t
know how much fun diving is
until you’ve tried it,” Pavey said.
“Don’t wait too long to learn to
dive.”
