Study Shows Zero Percent
Mortality for PBRMC Heart Surgery
The Society of Thoracic
Surgeons recently released
data relating to operative
mortality rates of cardiovascular
programs in more than
780 hospitals nationwide,
including Poplar Bluff
Regional Medical Center
(PBRMC). This study’s
database, which was created
in 1990, is the largest and
most comprehensive study
of heart surgery patients in
the world.
The results of this study
show that patients who
have had Coronary Bypass
Surgery at PBRMC have
better outcomes compared
to national averages, including
a zero percent operative
mortality rate compared to
almost two percent nationally.
All other complications
after surgery at PBRMC,
including postoperative
infections, neurologic
complications, renal failure
and atrial fibrillation, were
also found to be lower than
national averages.
The latest data release
includes results from the
time period of June 2007
through April of 2009. The
study measures the quality
of a heart surgery program
through review of operative
mortality, which means
death up to 30 days after
surgery, and adjusted morbidity,
which means complications
after surgery. Risk
adjustments are also taken
into account by considering
a patient’s risk factors and
health problems. This type
of measurement allows for
a valid comparison between
hospitals regardless of differences
in the severity of
heart disease treated among
participating hospitals.
The results show that
before surgery, patients
who had Coronary Bypass
Surgery at PBRMC were
HealtHY liFeStYleS
sicker and at a higher risk
for death and complications
in comparison to national
averages. Several factors
were identified in contributing
to these higher risks,
including high percentages
of current smokers, diabetes,
morbid obesity and
cadiogenic shock.
Dr. Stanley Ziomek,
Cardiothoracic Surgeon at
PBRMC, links three reasons
to why PBRMC’s heart
program yields these excellent
outcomes. First, the
door-to-balloon time, which
refers to the interval from
patient’s arrival to inflation
of the balloon catheter
within the patient’s blocked
artery, is far less than the
national goal of 90 minutes.
“Second, the intensive
care and progressive care
nursing units are very good
at PBRMC. The nurses on
these units are specially
trained and experienced
in caring for patients
after heart surgery,” says
Ziomek.
Third, the results of the
study show that beating
heart surgery was performed
67 percent of the
time at PBRMC compared
to only 21 percent
nationally. Beating heart
surgery is one of the newest
advancements in heart
surgery and offers patients
better outcomes and quicker
recoveries compared to
traditional coronary bypass
surgery.
“Our goal is to continue
bringing clinical excellence
home to our communities.
Based on these independent
results, we can without a
doubt say that heart surgery
at PBRMC is just as good,
and in many cases better,
compared to anywhere in
the nation,” said Ziomek.

Tio’s Mexican Bar and Grill on Three Rivers
Blvd. in Poplar Bluff, was outstanding. From
start to finish it was a first class experience.
We liked this restaurant so much that I’ve
been there for lunch three times in the last two
weeks. (well, I had to check to see if their iced
tea was really ridiculously weak or if it was just
an accident the first time I went--it was; two
trips later, the iced tea was brewed to its normal
strength)
One of the things I absolutely love about this
place is its decor and ambiance.
I’d rather eat in a
beautiful place with mediocre
food any day than
a scruffy place with fantastic
food (at least that’s
what I tell people!). It’s
amazing that this restaurant is located in Poplar
Bluff It has been transformed into maybe
the prettiest restaurant in Poplar Bluff.
The interior has sleek black and white themes
trim. The bar is amazing and there are meeting
rooms.

The food
is good at
this place,
too, although I’ve only ordered one thing every
time I go. I like the Chicken Chimichanga--filled
with lots of chicken and served with beans, rice
and guacamole salad. The first time I went, my
mother ordered one of the lunch specials. She
said the beef tasted like it had been ground
too many time and she didn’t like the red sauce,
either. Now, she’s ordering the Chicken Chimichanga,
too! Maybe this was just a one-time
bad experience for her, maybe
all the beef tastes that way.
You’ll have to let me know--I’m
sticking to my favorite.
This is certainly a welcome
addition to the 573 restaurant
scene. If you haven’t been to Tio’s, I urge
you to try it. Look for me--I’ll probably be in
a table having iced tea and a Chicken Chimichanga!

It seems like Ben Adkins is
at the center of everything.
From starting his Chiropractic
practice 8 months ago to introducing
most of Poplar Bluff to
facebook, the Boy Scouts, to
the Chamber Ambassadors, to
Ben’s newest passion project
+Bluffee, if it’s happening in
the community Ben Adkins is
probably near the center of it.
Merging his community
involvement with his practice
with his personal life involves
a ton of energy and an attitude
that attracts people to him.
With that in mind we decided
to do our first 573 Homes &
Lifestyles profile on Ben to
give you the opportunity to
learn more about Ben, what
is doing, and what the future
holds.
Ben Before Poplar
Bluff
Ben is originally from
Pocahontas and his father, Jim
Adkins in the radio business.
“I guess at some aspect marketing
is in my blood. My dad
is a whiz at promoting businesses
and I suppose I picked
up a little of his interests.”
Ben always knew he wanted to
be in the health field,
“I always wanted to
help people, and I
have always wanted
to be in the healthcare
field where I
get the chance to
make a difference in
people’s lives one on
one”. Ben decided
on Chiropractic in
part because of the
influence of Dr.
Ungerank of Pocahontas.
After graduating high school
Ben attended Arkansas State
University where he met his
wife Kelli. Ben received a degree
in biological sciences and
moved on to Logan College
of Chiropractic in St. Louis.
Logan University is one of the
foremost Chiropractic colleges
in the United States. “It was
hard, and we were crammed
into a house in Chesterfield,
but I enjoyed it and received a
tremendous education in how to
treat patients”, Adkins said.
Adversity Becomes Opportunity
After graduating college you
must pass boards before becoming
a practicing chiropractor.
Ben easily passed 3 of the 4
parts of the boards. However,
one of the parts, generally the
easiest part, was a problem for
Ben. “I knew the material, but I
suppose I was just anxious I just
had trouble with the one part”,
said Adkins.
The exam can only be taken
twice a year, so while waiting
to take the test, Ben took a job
working as a salesman at Better
Night Sleep Center in Poplar
Bluff. “While working there you
had some dead time in between
customers coming in. During
that time I began to read about
a guy named Jeremy Shoemaker
who had become wealthy
through working with websites.
I became very interested in the
ways people and businesses can
use the internet to reach people”,
said Adkins.
Dr. Ben
After passing his boards Ben began
practicing with Dr. Smoth-
in Doniphan and Poplar Bluff.
Ben said, “Dr. Smothers is a
great doctor who I would send
my family to for treatment. I
am very grateful to him for the
opportunity he gave me and I
learned a great deal from him”.
However, there came a time
when now Dr. Ben decided to
open his own practice. “I just
felt the time was right for me to
begin my own practice. There
were so many things to do in
order to get started, but I had a
lot of help from friends and the
Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce
was right there with me
every step of the way helping
me”, said Adkins.
Adkins Chiropractic opened at
805 West Pine in July of last
year, and has grown since day
one.
“We focus on patient care
with a high degree of personal
attention laying out all of their
options. Sometimes our patients
are better served by other doctors
in other specialties and we
refer patients all the time. Our
foremost concern is that our
patients needs are addressed”,
said Adkins.
If you think it is odd that an
office that opened in July is
known by most everyone in a
community you are not alone.
However, there are two
reasons for the near instant notoriety.

of everything in the community
and perhaps more importantly,

We have over a thousand
friends now, but before we had
that many new patients would
come in and a surprising number

Since coming home
from the Marine Corps
Roger Pruett has wanted
a place that adults could
enjoy going with their
friends. So he has decided
to open up a split restaurant
and pub/nightclub
concept named 241 Club
and Pop’s that will open
this spring.
Pruett has brought in
Eddie Sipes to manage the
establishment. Sipes has
an extensive background
in the industry, “Roger
is doing this first class.
We want to establish a
mature first class experience
that will attract adult
who want a place to enjoy
themselves without any
drama”, said Sipes.
Pop’s will feature a full
menu and be open for
lunch and dinner. “I guarantee
you we will have
the cheapest drinks and
cheapest lunch around.
You won’t be disappointed”,
said Sipes. Pop’s
will maintain its rustic
atmosphere, and will host
Newman League dart and
pool teams.
While Pop’s may seem
familiar to those who visited
the W Club, the 241
Club has been completely
remodeled. “We wanted
to change everything.
The 241 Club will be first
class, and we will have the
finest nightclub between
Memphis and St. Louis.”,
said Pruett.
Security will be the first
concern with management
at the 241 Club. “I
am spending a great deal
of money to have a first
class operation, and I hope
that people see the effort
is respected and carry
themselves accordingly.
There will be an absolute
zero tolerance policy with
regards to fighting, and no
one will be serving minors
at our club”, said Pruett.
241 will offer upscale VIP
areas where groups can
enjoy the atmosphere in
areas apart from the rest
of the club.
Pop’s will be opening in
the next few weeks with
the 241 Club later this
spring. They are located at
