electr<strong>on</strong>ics industry (extract from Annual Report, MC&IT, India)<br />

Envir<strong>on</strong>mental protecti<strong>on</strong> and polluti<strong>on</strong> abatement towards<br />

sustainable development are <strong>the</strong> thrust areas throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

developed world. <strong>The</strong> need to adopt more envir<strong>on</strong>mentally<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>sible manufacturing processes <strong>for</strong>cing industry to<br />

make changes in <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al processes, product and<br />

services offered, <strong>for</strong> sustainable development. Sustainable<br />

development rests <strong>on</strong> three pillars: ec<strong>on</strong>omic growth,<br />

social progress and protecti<strong>on</strong> of our envir<strong>on</strong>ment and<br />

natural resources. Cleaner producti<strong>on</strong> is to minimise <strong>the</strong><br />

envir<strong>on</strong>mental impacts of products and services. Cleaner<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> plays a critical role with respect to influencing<br />

changes in c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> and producti<strong>on</strong> patterns. To avoid<br />

jeopardising future generati<strong>on</strong>s, all ef<strong>for</strong>ts should be made<br />

to ensure that services and products resp<strong>on</strong>d to basic<br />

needs and improve <strong>the</strong> quality of life while minimising use<br />

of natural resources and toxic materials. <strong>The</strong> Department is<br />

helping industry in using cleaner producti<strong>on</strong> technologies by<br />

sp<strong>on</strong>soring such activities at R&D instituti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>for</strong> technology<br />

development. C<strong>on</strong>sidering <strong>the</strong> importance of Envir<strong>on</strong>ment,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department of In<strong>for</strong>mati<strong>on</strong> Technology implemented<br />

a UNDP sp<strong>on</strong>sored programme <strong>on</strong> ‘Envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

Management in <strong>Indian</strong> Electr<strong>on</strong>ics Industry’. Phase I of <strong>the</strong><br />

programme was successfully completed and a technical<br />

guide was prepared <strong>for</strong> use by industry and creating<br />

awareness am<strong>on</strong>g stakeholders. Based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> findings of<br />

phase I, a sec<strong>on</strong>d phase programme was prepared and<br />

submitted to UNDP <strong>for</strong> funding. Interacti<strong>on</strong> is also developed<br />

with Indo-German Envir<strong>on</strong>ment programme (GTZ) <strong>for</strong><br />
