The <strong>de</strong>ntate gyrus consists of a superficial molecular, the granular in the middle,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the polymorphic being the <strong>de</strong>epest. The subiculum is connected to the three<br />

layers of the hippocampus proper, while <strong>de</strong>velops into a six-layered structure to<br />

the end close to the parahippocampal neocortex.<br />

Hippocampus is accessed by the association areas of cortex through the entorhinal<br />

cortex, which provi<strong>de</strong>s the major input to the hippocampal formation. Other<br />

afferents to the hippocampus inclu<strong>de</strong> indusium griseum, cingulate gyrus, spetal<br />

nuclei, <strong>and</strong> parahippocampal gyrus. The efferent fibers carrying the principal<br />

output from hippocampus follow the fiber through the alveus, fimbria <strong>and</strong> fornix.<br />

The two contralateral hippocampi on each hemisphere are interconnected by fornix<br />

commissure. A full <strong>de</strong>scription of the synaptic organization of the hippocampus<br />

is provi<strong>de</strong>d by Johnston <strong>and</strong> Amaral (1997).
