4 Asia <strong>and</strong> higher <strong>education</strong><br />

4.1 Introduction to Asia<br />

60<br />

How many cont<strong>in</strong>ents are <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world? There is not a s<strong>in</strong>gle answer for this simple<br />

question because <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> any particular number <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ents on <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth is not<br />

based upon universal def<strong>in</strong>ition. By def<strong>in</strong>ition "Cont<strong>in</strong>ents are understood to be large,<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uous, discrete masses <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong>, ideally separated by expanses <strong>of</strong> water" (Lewis & Wigen,<br />

1997). As Asia <strong>and</strong> Europe are a s<strong>in</strong>gle l<strong>and</strong>mass, called Eurasia, so geologists <strong>and</strong> physical<br />

geographers do not consider <strong>the</strong>m two separate cont<strong>in</strong>ents whereas political <strong>and</strong> demographic<br />

geographers favor seven-cont<strong>in</strong>ent model, by divid<strong>in</strong>g Eurasia <strong>in</strong> to two cont<strong>in</strong>ents, likewise by<br />

consider<strong>in</strong>g North <strong>and</strong> South America as separate entities. This self designed partition gives<br />

seven cont<strong>in</strong>ents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, <strong>and</strong><br />

Australia (The Encyclopædia Britannica, 2009). Due to difference <strong>in</strong> outlooks, at present, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are numerous models that are be<strong>in</strong>g followed <strong>in</strong> different parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world: <strong>the</strong> seven-cont<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

model is common <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>and</strong> most English-speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>countries</strong>; <strong>the</strong> six-cont<strong>in</strong>ent comb<strong>in</strong>ed-<br />

Eurasia model <strong>in</strong> Russia, central <strong>Asian</strong> republics (CARs), <strong>and</strong> Japan; <strong>the</strong> six-cont<strong>in</strong>ent comb<strong>in</strong>ed-<br />

America model <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> most parts <strong>of</strong> Europe. Some geographers hold <strong>the</strong><br />

view <strong>of</strong> five cont<strong>in</strong>ents by consider<strong>in</strong>g America (north <strong>and</strong> south) as a s<strong>in</strong>gle entity <strong>and</strong> similarly<br />

Europe <strong>and</strong> Asia toge<strong>the</strong>r as Eurasia. If we take above def<strong>in</strong>ition for granted <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>re are four<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world because we‟ll have to consider Africa, Asia <strong>and</strong> Europe one cont<strong>in</strong>ent;<br />

Afro-Eurasia while North America <strong>and</strong> South America a s<strong>in</strong>gle unit; America. It is general<br />

practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, both at state <strong>and</strong> organizational level, that follow<strong>in</strong>g any particular model<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ents is generally identified by a convention ra<strong>the</strong>r than any strict<br />

criteria or def<strong>in</strong>ition. In this study we follow UN five macro geographical (cont<strong>in</strong>ental) regions<br />

model: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe <strong>and</strong> Oceania (UN, 2010).<br />

4.1.1 The name “Asia”<br />

<strong>Asian</strong>s had never used <strong>the</strong> word Asia for <strong>the</strong> gigantic l<strong>and</strong> mass on which <strong>the</strong>y had been liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> years. It was Europeans who called this area Asia <strong>in</strong> around 5 th century B.C.<br />

The word Asia has its orig<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Greek word Ἀσία- Asia. K<strong>in</strong>g Herodotus (484BC – 425<br />

BC) used <strong>the</strong> term Asia for Great Persian Empire. In <strong>the</strong> Roman Empire (27 BC- 476 AD.) <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was also a South-eastern prov<strong>in</strong>ce that carried <strong>the</strong> name <strong>the</strong> Asia, which was a part <strong>of</strong> region
