3.3.2 Classification on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> membership<br />

The yearbook <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational organization has presented a simple way <strong>of</strong> classify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational organizations that is based on <strong>the</strong> type <strong>and</strong> geographical location <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> an<br />

organization.<br />

3.3.2.1 Umbrella organizations<br />

Those organizations, which have at least three o<strong>the</strong>r autonomous non-regional <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

bodies along with states as full members are called umbrella organizations. The United Nations<br />

is considered as an umbrella organization because its Specialized Agencies are "members" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

UN system.<br />

3.3.2.2 Universal organizations<br />

It <strong>in</strong>cludes those <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations, which have a geographically widespread<br />

membership, balanced participation <strong>of</strong> members <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> management <strong>and</strong> as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> policy<br />

control: <strong>the</strong>re should be members <strong>in</strong> at least 60 <strong>countries</strong>.<br />

3.3.2.3 Intercont<strong>in</strong>ental organizations<br />

Those <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations whose members belong to more than one cont<strong>in</strong>ent are called<br />

<strong>in</strong>ter-cont<strong>in</strong>ental organizations.<br />

3.3.2.4 Regional organizations<br />

It <strong>in</strong>cludes all, governmental or non-governmental, <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations whose all<br />

members are from <strong>the</strong> same cont<strong>in</strong>ent or sub-cont<strong>in</strong>ent.<br />

3.3.3 Classification on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> titles<br />

International organizations, both governmental or non-governmental, use a range <strong>of</strong> terms <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>ficial titles. These terms have different significance depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

organizations, <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>gs by, which <strong>the</strong>y were established or through, which <strong>the</strong>y function.<br />

Classification on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> term<strong>in</strong>ology has its own advantages <strong>and</strong> disadvantages because<br />

same term used for two different organizations may have different sense <strong>and</strong> significance. For<br />

example, an organization that carries <strong>the</strong> term “union” <strong>in</strong> its name may resemble an "alliance" or<br />

an "alliance" can be closer to a “union” <strong>in</strong> its nature <strong>and</strong> function (UIA, 2011). A broad<br />

classification based on <strong>the</strong> term<strong>in</strong>ology is as follow:
