5.2.11 The OECD <strong>role</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Asian</strong> higher <strong>education</strong><br />

In <strong>the</strong> OECD <strong>the</strong>re exist many specialized bodies that are work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>education</strong> also at all levels <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> OECD area <strong>and</strong> help to achieve organizational objectives. The<br />

area <strong>of</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se bodies encompasses a wide variety <strong>of</strong> doma<strong>in</strong>s that ranges from childhood<br />

<strong>education</strong> to higher <strong>education</strong>; policy fram<strong>in</strong>g to student assessments <strong>and</strong> data collection to<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation dissem<strong>in</strong>ation. Among <strong>the</strong> twenty one <strong>Asian</strong> <strong>countries</strong> that have uses <strong>the</strong> OECD<br />

platform, only eleven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g member <strong>countries</strong>, have presence <strong>in</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

bodies work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>education</strong>. All four OECD member economies from Asia have <strong>the</strong> highest<br />

presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bodies specialized for <strong>education</strong>: Japan is an actor <strong>in</strong> 12 bodies, Korea <strong>in</strong> eleven,<br />

Israel <strong>in</strong> eight <strong>and</strong> Turkey can be seen <strong>in</strong> seven such bodies. (See <strong>the</strong> table below)<br />
