AHELO is pioneer <strong>in</strong>ternational study <strong>of</strong> its nature at higher <strong>education</strong> level. OECD has already<br />

assessed <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills 15 year old students through <strong>the</strong> Program for International<br />

Student Assessment (PISA) test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> adults through <strong>the</strong> Program for<br />

International Assessment <strong>of</strong> Adult Competencies (PIAAC).<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to OECD, this project will focus <strong>the</strong> generic skills <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> undergraduate students by<br />

assess<strong>in</strong>g critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, analytical reason<strong>in</strong>g, problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> written communication<br />

(OECD, 2011). AHELO aims also to collect contextual <strong>in</strong>formation that will help to l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> data<br />

with <strong>the</strong> outcomes by relat<strong>in</strong>g student performance with <strong>the</strong>ir socio-economic backgrounds <strong>and</strong><br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g environments. OECD has planned a conference at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 2012 to discuss <strong>the</strong> results<br />

<strong>of</strong> AHELO feasibility study <strong>and</strong> to see whe<strong>the</strong>r this project is scientifically <strong>and</strong> practically<br />

achievable. The f<strong>in</strong>al results <strong>of</strong> AHELO are expected <strong>in</strong> 2013.<br />

This assessment is <strong>of</strong> great importance for all stakeholders <strong>in</strong> higher <strong>education</strong>: students, parents,<br />

teachers, universities, policy-makers <strong>and</strong> employers because AHELO will give <strong>in</strong>formation on<br />

<strong>the</strong> relevance <strong>and</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>education</strong> <strong>and</strong> competencies that are be<strong>in</strong>g provided <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> HEIs. The<br />

AHELO feasibility study <strong>in</strong>cludes only two discipl<strong>in</strong>es: economics <strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. AHELO is<br />

more than student assessment as it aims to weigh up both <strong>in</strong>puts <strong>and</strong> outputs also that may<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude family background, social environment, teachers <strong>and</strong> available resources.<br />

5.2.6.5 e) Quality Teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> Education<br />

This project is has been designed to underl<strong>in</strong>e effective quality <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>and</strong> mechanisms that<br />

may help o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stitutions to improve <strong>the</strong> quality teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir respective <strong>in</strong>stitutions at all<br />

levels. This project has two phases:<br />

Phase 1: an overview <strong>of</strong> 29 HEIs <strong>in</strong> 20 <strong>countries</strong> to study <strong>in</strong>itiatives to enhance <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong><br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g. This was completed dur<strong>in</strong>g December 2007 to June 2009
