5.2.2 History <strong>and</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> OECD<br />

OECD is an <strong>of</strong>fshoot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Organization for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC), which<br />

was established <strong>in</strong> 1947 to adm<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>the</strong> Marshall Plan for <strong>the</strong> recovery <strong>and</strong> reconstruction <strong>of</strong><br />

post World War II <strong>in</strong> Europe. The OEEC emerged as an effective <strong>in</strong>tergovernmental organization<br />

as it paved <strong>the</strong> way for a new era <strong>of</strong> cooperation <strong>and</strong> promoted <strong>in</strong>terdependence <strong>in</strong> Europe. Once<br />

Marshall Plan objectives were achieved until <strong>the</strong> late 1950s, <strong>the</strong> <strong>role</strong> <strong>of</strong> OEEC had dim<strong>in</strong>ished.<br />

But <strong>the</strong>re was still need <strong>of</strong> a regional economic body, which could provide a platform to enhance<br />

cooperation among <strong>in</strong>dustrialized western nations.<br />
