It covers Asia <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Region, through its programs <strong>in</strong> Freshwater, Oceans, Basic<br />

<strong>and</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Sciences, Earth Sciences, <strong>and</strong> Coastal zones <strong>and</strong> Small Isl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

3. Cairo Regional Office for Sciences<br />

It serves as a regional UNESCO <strong>of</strong>fice for science & technology <strong>and</strong> Communication &<br />

Information <strong>in</strong> Arab states. It also houses Cluster Office for Egypt, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya <strong>and</strong><br />

Sudan.<br />

4. Beirut Regional Bureau for Education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arab States<br />

This <strong>of</strong>fice is engaged <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g Arab <strong>countries</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>education</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g, policy reforms,<br />

development <strong>of</strong> <strong>education</strong> from basic to higher level, research knowledge shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> social <strong>and</strong><br />

natural sciences, culture <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation. This <strong>of</strong>fice also serves as a Cluster Office to Lebanon,<br />

Syria, Jordan, Iraq <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Autonomous Palest<strong>in</strong>ian Territories.<br />

National <strong>of</strong>fices<br />

National <strong>of</strong>fice serves <strong>the</strong> particular needs <strong>of</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle country where it exists. At present <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

21 UNESCO National Offices <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world out <strong>of</strong>, which 7 are located <strong>in</strong> Asia-Pacific region<br />

while 4 are <strong>in</strong> Arab region.<br />

UNESCO Office <strong>in</strong> Amman - National Office to Jordan <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East Cluster.<br />

UNESCO Office for Iraq - National Office for Iraq <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East Cluster.<br />

UNESCO Office <strong>in</strong> Ramallah - National Office to <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian Authority <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle<br />

East Cluster.<br />

UNESCO Office <strong>in</strong> Khartoum - National Office for Sudan <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red Sea Cluster. Along<br />

with <strong>the</strong>se field <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>the</strong>re are two Laison <strong>of</strong>fices also, located <strong>in</strong> Geneva <strong>and</strong> New<br />

York, <strong>and</strong> are directly attached with <strong>the</strong> United Nations.<br />

5.1.3 UNESCO <strong>in</strong> Asia: Bangkok regional <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

Though UNESCO exists <strong>in</strong> Asia s<strong>in</strong>ce its <strong>in</strong>ception <strong>and</strong> has played a special <strong>role</strong> over many<br />

years with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g efforts <strong>of</strong> Member <strong>countries</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased
