Accord<strong>in</strong>g to UNESCO <strong>the</strong>re are n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>countries</strong> <strong>in</strong> central Asia; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia,<br />

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan <strong>and</strong> Uzbekistan. Central Asia is<br />

most th<strong>in</strong>ly populated Area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent. This region has a very high literacy rate that is<br />

almost 99%. Likewise Gross Enrolment Ratio at secondary level is more than 95 percent while<br />

participation at tertiary level is 25 percent. In Armenia, Kyrgyzstan <strong>and</strong> Mongolia <strong>the</strong><br />

participation rate at tertiary level is more than 50 percent. The school life expectancy from<br />

primary tertiary level for this sub-region is more than 12 years <strong>and</strong> it is 15 years <strong>in</strong> Kazakhstan.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> last two decades this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent has seen an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> school life<br />

expectancy. Similarly gross enrolment ratios at secondary <strong>and</strong> tertiary levels also <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same period.
