PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 19, 2013
- After the Communist "Iron Curtain"
started to crumble in 1989, the U. S.
Catholic Bishops established an annual
collection for the Catholic Churches in
Eastern Europe. These Local Churches
had been oppressed by Communism for
decades and were starved for
resources. The Bishops called on
Fr. R. George Sarauskas from the
Archdiocese of Chicago to head up this effort and for
thirteen years he coordinated the distribution of funds
to various Eastern European dioceses, helping them to
develop much needed infrastructure for their churches -
seminaries for the training of new priests, offices and
communication equipment for diocesan administration,
living quarters for bishops who had been living in
rented rooms in other people's houses, scholarships to
American and Vatican seminaries for candidates who
would later become bishops and archbishops for those
dioceses. For all his efforts, Fr. Sarauskas received
many honors and titles from those Churches, including
the title of Monsignor [Honorary Prelate of His Holiness]
from the Vatican. Msgr. Sarauskas has served in the
Archdiocese of Chicago in a variety of administrative
and pastoral positions. Currently, he serves as Cardinal
George's Delegate for Special Projects and resides and
helps out here at Incarnation. Today he celebrates
40 years as a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago. We
are pleased to have Msgr. Sarauskas live and worship
with us. I asked him if he had a portrait of himself in his
ceremonial robes for the cover of the bulletin so that we
might honor and thank him for his 40 years of
dedicated service to the Church. He will offer a special
Mass of Thanksgiving at 11:00 AM this Sunday followed
by a reception in the Bernardin Center. All are welcome.
Congratulations, Msgr. Sarauskas, on 40 years of
Priesthood! May you have many, many more!
- In the Gospel reading for today, Jesus speaks to his
disciples about the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus refers to
the Holy Spirit as “the Advocate.” This is a fitting
descriptor of the function and role of the Holy Spirit,
since the Spirit of God is sent to us for our salvation.
The Holy Spirit is on our side, according to Jesus, for
three main purposes: first, to be present to us in the
“name” of Jesus; second, to “teach” us “everything”;
third, to “remind” us of what Jesus told the original
disciples. It is in this way that the work of the Holy
Spirit and the work of the church are inextricably
linked. The church, “filled with the Holy Spirit,”
proclaims the good news of the mighty works of God
that were accomplished in Jesus Christ. The church
speaks in the name of Jesus, teaches its members the
tenets of our faith, and proclaims the Gospel message
that Jesus proclaimed in his earthly ministry. The
readings for Pentecost Sunday teach us that the church
and its members are Spirit-driven and Spirit-led. We
celebrate today the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church
and to all its members throughout the ages.
In observance of Memorial Day, the Parish Office
will be closed on Monday, May 27th.
Enjoy your Memorial Day!
To our men and women in uniform… past, present
and future, God Bless you...and thank you.
Monsignor R. George Sarauskas
invites you to join him in a
of his ordination to the priesthood.
HUMAN CONCERNS
PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE
“If you want peace, work for justice” Pope Paul VI
The need for our participation in the Chicago Archdiocese
immigration reform effort is part of being a Catholic. New
York Cardinal Dolan recently said. “As we speak, persons
are being deported and an untold number of families are
being divided. Human beings continue to die in the
American desert. This suffering must end.” The
ineffective, unfair U.S. immigration laws are an example
of a cause of suffering which we, as Catholics, are
expected to actively work to change. This responsibility is
explained in the following Archdiocese of Chicago
statement. “[A]lthough the Church clearly teaches ‘...that
working for justice is a [central] part of the...
Gospel’ (Synod of 1971), a limited number of Catholics
seem aware of this commitment and even fewer are
mobilized for action by it.” Justice here means that everyone
has access to the basic needs of life and that they do
not have to undergo unnecessary suffering to meet these
needs. The statement continues, “in some instances,
Catholics confuse direct care for the poor [donations of
food and money]...with redressing the causes of poverty
and marginalization (the justice we must also work
for).” (The 2011-2016 Strategic Pastoral Plan for the
Archdiocese of Chicago, Background and Key findings)
Respect Life
“The right to life is the first among
human rights. To abort a child is to kill
someone who cannot defend himself.”
(Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos
Aires {now Pope Francis}, Sobre el cielo y la
tierra, On heaven and earth, 2011)
The postcards in support of immigration legislation
consistent with Catholic values are again available this
weekend. The Chicago Archdiocese commitment to
send 100,000 postcards from Catholics in the
archdiocese to their senators and representative gives
us all the opportunity tell these officials to vote for
better immigration laws. If you did not have the
opportunity to sign the cards last week, please
consider doing so this weekend. No need to find
postage and send yourself. Just sign and leave here
for delivery. The text of the postcard is provided
below for you to read and consider beforehand.
“[N]ow is the time to pass just and compassionate
immigration reform.... that:
• Provides a path to citizenship for undocumented
persons in the country;
• Preserves family unity as a corner-stone of our
national immigration system;
• Provides legal paths for low-skilled immigrant
workers to come and work in the United States;
• Restores due process protections to our immigration
enforcement policies;
• Addresses the root causes (push factors) of
migration, such as persecution and economic disparity
I look forward to monitoring your public position on
this vital issue to our nation. Our nation can no longer
wait.”
HOPE (Helping Other Parents Endure)
HOPE, a supportive group for parents who have lost a
child of any age, will be meeting on Thursday,
Teens Reaching out Addressing Incarnation Needs
Pentecost Sunday ~ May 19,2013
Pentecost, what does the word conjure up? Tongue of
fire? Jesus sending the Holy Spirit? Wear red? I was once at
a Pentecost mass where they had liturgical dancers carry
HUGE bowls of fire over their heads and walk gracefully
through the aisles. It looked like each parishioner was
receiving the fire of the Holy Spirit but it also made everyone
feel uncomfortable. Maybe because of the live flames in
church, but I really think it was because we couldn’t deny or
refuse that we received the flame. We are uncomfortable
because then we HAVE to respond with what are we going to
do with the flame of the Holy Spirit. If we get comfortable, with
our faith and relationship with Jesus we are not using it to its
fullest potential. Being Christian is not about being comfortable
and ministering to only those we know and love being
Christian is about reaching out and bringing love to those on
the margins. Christian’s are not supposed to be comfortable,
look at the cross!
June 2nd begins our SSYMA Softball Season - Our Home
games are played at Walker Park on Sunday’s from
1-4pm and then our during the week games are played
mostly on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at other host
parishes. Tournament on August 3rd beginning with Mass
on the Grass and then a day of fun.
July 28th thru August 2nd is WORK TOUR NEW YORK or
WTNY ‘13. We will once again be going to Notre Dame
Retreat Center Canandaigua, NY. Don and I will be
driving the teens in a 12 passenger van to the retreat
center and then each day we will work at a site the
Catholic Charities designates, each evening we will reflect
on the day’s work with reflection, mass, journal writing and
different types of prayer.
August 4th Softball Tournament.
November 21st thru November 23rd in Indianapolis, IN
the week before Thanksgiving. This is the most amazing
event for teens. It is 3 days of talks, mass, meeting
people, fun, singing, dancing, cheering, laughing and
reflecting. Its 23,000 Catholic Teens together being the
future of our church. Understanding why they are Catholic
and that there are so many out there. Its loud and fast and
crazy and sometimes silly, but it is our church and they
are our future. We only have room for 15 teens and 4
adult chaperones. Please watch the promotional video -
Incarnation Athletics
Attention Parents, Alumni and Parishioners:
The Incarnation athletic program is looking for
parents, alumni and parishioners to join one of
our boards and/or coaching staff. Our athletic
program offers an opportunity for children in
both Incarnation School and the Religious
Education Program, and of all athletic capabilities
to participate in organized sports programs. The
focus of our athletic program is on sportsmanship
and fair play, allowing the athletes to learn
the fundamentals of each sport while building
their self-confidence, discipline and respect for
their teammates and other teams. Over the
years our athletes have seen much success both
on and off the playing court, due in large part to
the help of hard working parents, alumni and
parishioners. Most boards meet just once a
month for a 1 hour or so. In order to keep
our program strong we need your help!
ABOUT THE MASS ~ We hear our story….
Every Sunday we gather to hear our story.
We prepare to hear it with singing and silence and
prayer. We put aside the cares that separate us
from one another so that we can hear the story; that
makes this gathering of individuals a people
fashioned and chosen by God.
Over the course of three years, we hear most of the
New Testament and a large portion of the Old
Testament. Our Christian story is told in legends,
myths, histories, genealogies, laws, customs, wise
sayings, prophecy, letters and songs (psalms).
These scriptures tell the story of a God who made
and loved a people. We must recognize that these
stories and ours, that the people in them are our
people, that the God who called and loves them,
calls and love us and is fashioning us into a people
who can reveal to all who God is.
From the Liturgy Committee
This bulletin is provided to our parish each week
at no cost to the parish. We actually receive
much needed revenue from the bulletin. This is
made possible by the advertisers. We are grateful
to all the advertisers who support our bulletin. We
encourage you to look through the ads in the bulletin and
