Muco-X 200®
What Muco-X 200 is and what it is used for
Muco-X 200 contains the active substance N-acetylcysteine. It
liquefies viscous mucus in the airways. As a result, Muco-X 200
helps you to cough up the congested mucus, makes it easier to
breathe and reduces the need to cough. This medicine is therefore
used for airway diseases associated with the excessive formation
of viscous mucus that is difficult to cough up (chesty colds).
If prescribed by a doctor, Muco-X 200 can also be used as additional
treatment for an inborn metabolic disorder that leads to
enhanced secretion of particularly sticky mucus in the airways
and digestive tract (cystic fibrosis).
Before you use Muco-X 200
The action of Muco-X 200 is supported by copious fluid intake.
Smoking contributes to the excessive formation of bronchial mucus.
Giving up smoking promotes the action of Muco-X 200.
Do not use Muco-X 200

if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to any of the ingredients;
if you have a peptic ulcer;
if you have a (rare) congenital metabolic disease (phenylketonuria).
In addition, do not take Muco-X 200 together with cough medicines
(antitussives) since they suppress coughing and prevent natural
self-cleansing of the airways. This makes it difficult to cough
up the liquefied mucus and can lead to congestion of bronchial
mucus with the risk of bronchial constriction and airway infection.
Your doctor knows what to do in this case.
Because of the high active substance content and its presentation
as tablets, Muco-X 200 is not suitable for children under one year
of age.
Take special care with Muco-X 200 in the following situations
If you had breathing difficulties or a rash after previously taking
a product with the same active substance as contained in Muco-
X 200, you absolutely must speak to an expert before starting to
take Muco-X 200. If you are at risk of gastrointestinal bleeding (e.g.
if you have a peptic ulcer), you should take the product only under
medical supervision.
The simultaneous administration of some other medicines can
lead to mutual changes in their effects. Thus, for example, the efficacy
of some medicines used to prevent narrowing of the airways
(called bronchodilators) may be enhanced. The effects of some
products administered for blood flow disturbances in the coronary
arteries (nitrates used for angina pectoris) can also be increased
by the simultaneous use of Muco-X 200.
During treatment with antibiotics (prescribed by the doctor),
Muco-X 200 should be taken at an interval of 2 hours before or
after the antibiotic. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you which
antibiotics this rule applies to.
Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you are suffering from
other illnesses or diseases, have any allergies or are taking or externally
using other medicines (including those purchased without
prescription).
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or might be pregnant or if you are breast-feeding
your child, for safety‘s sake you should avoid medicines as far
as possible. It is not yet known whether Muco-X 200 can have side
effects on the unborn child or infant. Consequently, the medicine
should be taken during pregnancy only if expressly recommended
by the doctor. Please tell your doctor if you become pregnant
during the treatment.
If you urgently need Muco-X 200 while breast-feeding, for safety‘s
sake you should stop breast-feeding.
How to use Muco-X 200
Unless prescribed otherwise by the doctor:
Adults and children over 12 years: 1 tablet of Muco-X 200 3 times
daily or 3 tablets of 200 mg once a day, dissolved in water.
The tablets may be sucked or swallowed or be taken dissolved in
water.
If the excessive mucus formation and the associated cough do
not improve after two weeks of treatment, you should consult a
doctor so that he/she can determine the cause more accurately
and, for example, rule out a malignant airway disease.
Always take the dose as stated in this package leaflet or as prescribed
by your doctor. If you think that the effect of the medicine
is too weak or too strong, speak to your doctor, pharmacist or
druggist.
Possible side effects of Muco-X 200
The following side effects may occur when taking Muco-X 200:
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, vomiting or
diarrhoea may occur occasionally, as may nettle rash, headaches
and fever. Patients who are particularly sensitive may develop
signs of hypersensitivity (allergy) which appear as skin reactions
(rash, itching) and respiratory organ reactions (shortness of breath
or bronchoconstriction). In this case you should stop taking Muco-
X 200 immediately and consult a doctor.
The breath may acquire an unpleasant smell for a short time.
You should tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you notice
side effects not described here.
Further information
Store Muco-X 200 at room temperature (15 - 25°C) and out of the
reach of children.
Do not use the medicine after the date shown on the container
after «EXP.».
