About Bloomsburg
Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education,
is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its
development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and
finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and
career education.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States,
and excellence, ranging from its 10 NCAA championships to its international reputation in
a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating
a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin.
And it’s a busy place — with more than 150 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division
II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through
nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience
and distance learning courses on public television.
The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of
about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus,
and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants and the Bloomsburg Fair in September.
More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia
Mall, northwest of town.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport,
Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours
from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
As Bloomsburg University wrestling
coach Dan Wirnsberger gets ready for
the start of the 2003-04 season he is
sure of just one thing, the season will
be exciting for both the team and the
fans. From there your guess will be as
good as his as to how the season will
play out.
Wirnsberger’s uncertainty comes
from the fact that this year’s team will
feature 16 newcomers to the roster.
Many of the those freshmen will be in
the lineup on a regular basis facing one
of the toughest schedules in recent
memory. New to the Bloomsburg
schedule this year are Big 10 team
Ohio State and Indiana as well as
perennial top-five Cornell.
“Our success on the mat will
depend on how quickly we can develop
our talented athletes into Division I
caliber wrestlers,” said Wirnsberger.
“We have numerous Pennsylvania State
2003-04 Preview
7
placewinners on our team this year so
the present and future looks bright.”
This year’s freshmen class was
ranked 14 th by one national
publication so Wirnsberger and his
staff know they have plenty of talent to
work with.
“I feel we have a good mix of
experienced wrestlers to go along with
our youth,” said the second year
coach. “We have three returning EWL
place-winners along with two transfers
who will have to help us develop the
freshmen.”
But no matter how talented the
athlete, Wirnsberger knows they will
need to step up and be ready to face a
challenging schedule.
“I need for our team to mature
and grow up quickly,” Wirnsberger
continued. “By facing the type of
schedule we will face this year, I am
trying to show our wrestlers how hard
they have to work in order to become
an All-American or even a national
champion. I am confident they can get
it done.”
WEIGHT BY WEIGHT LOOK
125—Mike Collins and Brian Sellers
will battle for the starting job. Collins
moved into the starting lineup midway
through the 2002-03 season after an
injury forced Brock Hite to the
sidelines. Justin Thomas and Lou
Tirado will challenge for time as well
at this weight.
133—It’s a two way battle at this weight
for the starting job between Justin
Haupt and Bryan Hart. Haupt, was last
year’s starter, while Hart is a former

PIAA state place-winners. The Huskies
will be deep at this weight.
B.J. Mikeska Returns to the Bloomsburg Lineup in
2003-04.
141—Brad Forbes and Scott Heckman
will see time at this weight. Forbes
started last season at 141 pounds, but
moved up to 149 pounds during the
year. Heckman was a three-time PIAA
state place-winner. Mark Piermattei
adds depth,
149—The Huskies will use a true
freshman, Tyler Williams, at this
weight. Williams comes to Bloomsburg
from Illinois where he was a four-time
Illinois State place-winner, including
State Champion as a senior. He was
ranked third in the nation at 145
pounds after finishing third at the high
school nationals. Will English and Chris
Tate will add depth for the Huskies.
2003-04 Preview
8
157—Red-shirt sophomore B.J.
Mikeska will start for the Huskies. As a
true freshman, Mikeska won 11
matches for the Huskies, but used his
off year to get stronger. He will battle
for mat time with Josh Loew, another
PIAA state place-winner.
165—Ryan Garner, last year’s starter,
will once again get the nod at this
weight. Garner was an EWL placewinner
as well and posted 17 wins
during the season. Adam Rupert will
be his backup.
174—After losing an NCAA qualifier,
Hunter Guenot, at this weight,
freshman Nate Shirk will battle with
Jim Bertulis and Jon Kokinda for mat
time.
184—After missing last season with an
injury, former NCAA qualifier Justin
Johnson returns to the lineup. Two
years ago Johnson was an EWL runnerup
and goes into this season ranked
11 th in the country. Chad Hoare will
backup Johnson.
197—Ryan Chulada will get the nod
here to start the season. In the second
half the year, Pat Bennett, a transfer
from Morrisville, Jr. College in New
York will battle for time.
HWT—Two freshmen, Dustin Swartz
and Shawn Albert, will compete for
mat time at this weight. Look for either
one of them on the mat this season.

Since the league was formed in 1976,
Bloomsburg has enjoyed much success in the
Eastern Wrestling League, both teamwise and
individually. The Huskies won the team championship
in 1981 and 1993 and have never placed
lower than sixth. Individually, Bloomsburg
wrestlers have claimed 34 titles.
The EWL will send 37 representatives to the
NCAA Division I Tournament in 2003. League
members include Bloomsburg, Clarion, Cleveland
State, Edinboro, Lock Haven, Pittsburgh, Virginia
Tech and West Virginia.
Bloomsburg wrestlers hold three of the four
fastest EWL tournament fall times. Heavyweight
Mel Sharp holds the record with an 18-second
fall in 1979, while Al McCollum recorded a fall at
36 seconds in 1981. In 1977, Leszek Radon
pinned an opponent in 39 seconds.
Nelson Field House
The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as
home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility has all the necessary
ingredients as it holds a 3,000-seat arena for all home basketball and wrestling events, an
indoor track, two tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and two handball/racquetball
courts. The building has classrooms and offices for use by the health/physical education and
athletic staffs. Nelson Field House also houses the wrestling practice room, which is a fully
padded area located on the second floor. A totally equipped Nautilus room adds to the strength
and conditioning area of the program, and Nelson Field House also offers a training room
staffed by two full-time athletic trainers and no less than 12 student assistants. Also located
in the facility is an equipment manager who handles the needs of Bloomsburg’s 18 varsity
athletic teams.
