Exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the Blast<br />

Visual exam<strong>in</strong>ation for roof <strong>and</strong> rib<br />

conditions<br />

Remove any source of electrical current<br />

Check the area with a blaster’s<br />

galvanometer for stray current<br />

Check for methane


Conta<strong>in</strong>ers for explosives <strong>and</strong><br />

detonators outside magaz<strong>in</strong>es<br />

Constructed of non-conductive<br />

materials<br />

Substantial construction<br />

Separate conta<strong>in</strong>ers


Charg<strong>in</strong>g the shot<br />

Check the depth <strong>and</strong> direction of the bore<br />

holes<br />

Check the depth of the undercut (If used)<br />

Br<strong>in</strong>g necessary equipment to blast<strong>in</strong>g area<br />

Determ<strong>in</strong>e the amount of explosives needed<br />

Determ<strong>in</strong>e the number <strong>and</strong> type of detonators<br />

Make the primers <strong>and</strong> load the boreholes<br />

Wire the shot


Charg<strong>in</strong>g the shot<br />

Check the shot for cont<strong>in</strong>uity<br />

Connect the leg wires to the connect<strong>in</strong>g wires<br />

Connect the connect<strong>in</strong>g wires to the blast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cable<br />

Check for methane<br />

Make certa<strong>in</strong> all persons are clear the blast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

area<br />

Post warn<strong>in</strong>gs around the area


Fir<strong>in</strong>g the shot<br />

Check cont<strong>in</strong>uity through the blast<strong>in</strong>g cable (150<br />

ohms or less)<br />

Sound a warn<strong>in</strong>g - FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!<br />

Wire to blast<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> fire the round<br />

Shunt the blast<strong>in</strong>g cable<br />

Allow time for ventilation


Responsibility after the shot<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>e the area lead<strong>in</strong>g to the blast area for<br />

loose roof, ribs <strong>and</strong> other dangers<br />

Check for methane<br />

Check the blast area for misfires<br />

If a misfire occurs, contact your supervisor


Few people can say , “ I was <strong>in</strong>jured<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g an explosives accident ”<br />

Respect the power of explosives <strong>and</strong> detonators<br />

H<strong>and</strong>le with care<br />

Keep all wires shunted until wired <strong>in</strong>to the circuit<br />

Keep detonators away from stray current sources<br />

Only certified shotfirers who are tra<strong>in</strong>ed to use<br />

explosives are permitted to perform those duties
