To recruit American Indian<br />

resource family homes.<br />

To improve the lives of<br />

abused, neglected and at-risk<br />

children through multidisciplinary<br />

efforts that support the<br />

identification, prevention and<br />

treatment of child abuse and<br />

neglect.<br />

To serve as the offical county<br />

body to coordinate the multiagency<br />

development of services<br />

for the prevention, identification,<br />

prosecution and treatment of<br />

child abuse and neglect. To<br />

improve the lives of children and<br />

families at-risk and those served<br />

by the Child Welfare and<br />

Protection systems through interdisciplinary<br />

collaboration,<br />

program development,<br />

accountability and advocacy.<br />

Establish a partnership<br />

between DCFS and the<br />

American Indian Community<br />

ICAN provides advocacy<br />

and leadership within <strong>Los</strong><br />

<strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>County</strong>, as well as on<br />

a state and national basis, for<br />

improved policy development,<br />

provision of services, public<br />

awareness, education and<br />

training.<br />

ICAN’s activities are carried<br />

out through a variety of<br />

committees comprised of both<br />

public and private sector<br />

professionals with expertise in<br />

child abuse, which address<br />

critical issues affecting the<br />

well-being of the most<br />

vulnerable children including<br />

prenatally substance affected<br />

infants, pregnant and<br />

parenting adolescent, children<br />

exposed to family violence,<br />

abducted children, and<br />

siblings of children who are<br />

victims of fatal abuse. Nonprofit<br />

ICAN Associates raises<br />

funds and public awareness<br />

for programs and issues<br />

identified by ICAN.<br />

American Indian Children's Council,<br />

the Native American Indian Commission<br />

DCFS, <strong>County</strong> departments, and<br />

child welfare and health care agencies.<br />

Thirty-two <strong>County</strong>, City, State and<br />

Federal agency heads are members of<br />

the ICAN Policy Committee, along with<br />

UCLA, five private sector members<br />

appointed by the Board of Supervisors<br />

and the Children’s Planning Council.<br />

ICAN's Policy Committee is comprised<br />

of the heads of each of the member<br />

agencies.<br />

DCFS hired an American<br />

Indian Supervisor,<br />

established report with<br />

American Community,<br />

American Indian Orientation<br />

Support and advocacy of<br />

new legislation to increase<br />

services for children who are<br />

victims of abuse and neglect.<br />

Support and advocacy for<br />

preventive services and best<br />

practice protocol to reduce<br />

the incidence of abuse and<br />

neglect.<br />

• Successful sponsorship<br />

& passage of AB 1687,<br />

Brownley which allows<br />

greater sharing of<br />

information among county<br />

departments regarding<br />

children in the child<br />

protection system. •<br />

Development &<br />

implementation of<br />

countywide inter-agency<br />

child abuse protocols,<br />

including training for all<br />

county departments. •<br />

Development & publication<br />

of guidelines for the<br />

mentoring of foster youth;<br />

formation of partnerships<br />

with the Rotary and Lyons<br />

organizations to support<br />

mentoring efforts. •<br />
