<strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Self</strong>-<strong>Assessment</strong> <strong>Report</strong><br />

job. CSW and SCSW Core Trainings are held as needed based on hiring promotion<br />

patterns. For the last four fiscal years, the Training Section has averaged 10 CSW<br />

Cores (between 25-40 participants each) and 3 SCSW Core Trainings per year (with<br />

30-40 participants each). These trainings are delivered/timed to hiring/promotion time<br />

frames. All new CSWs complete the CSW Core Academy prior to being assigned as a<br />

case-carrying social worker. Thereafter, CSWs participate in Core Enhancement<br />

Courses that are designed to be taken soon after they begin their work in order to<br />

facilitate more direct application. SCSWs complete, or at least commence, their SCSW<br />

Core Training within their first year as a SCSW.<br />

The CSW Core Academy Training Curriculum includes the following areas of core<br />

practice: Public Child Welfare Framework, Human Development, Child Maltreatment<br />

and Neglect, Case Planning and Case Management, Placement and Permanency,<br />

<strong>Assessment</strong> of Safety/Risk and Protective Capacity. The curriculum will also seek to<br />

increase the social worker’s knowledge, skill and values in the areas of: Strenth-Based,<br />

Family Centered Practice, Fairness and Equity, Youth and Family Engagement,<br />

Outcomes/Evidence based practice, Minimum Sufficient Level of Care, Legal Issues,<br />

Allegation Findings, Individualized Service Plan and Intervention, Safety Planning,<br />

Concurrent Planning, Visitation, Re-assessment, Well-being and Education/Mental<br />

Health and Family Needs <strong>Assessment</strong>.<br />

Other staff training that is provided includes:<br />

Core Enhancement: Training classes are designed as a continuation of the training for<br />

newly hired/promoted staff building upon the Core classes. For new social workers, the<br />

Enhancement training classes are provided to staff during the first two years of<br />

employment. Employees receive more in-depth training and advanced training which<br />

utilizes their on the job experiences.<br />

In-Service Training: Includes classes open to all staff with the intent of enhancing their<br />

knowledge, skills and values in various topics related to public child welfare practice.<br />

Advanced Training: This training is provided to staff with over two years of experience<br />

and is designed to meet their needs for professional development in child welfare<br />

practice. Advanced training is provided to Children’s Social Workers, Supervising<br />

Children’s Social Workers and their Managers. Enhanced update and refresher training<br />

is provided to Revenue Enhancement staff to keep them abreast of changes in the legal<br />

and fiscal requirements of state and federal regulations.<br />

Specialized In-Service: Training for Adoptions,Training Unit Supervisors, Hot Line,<br />

Command Post, Deaf Services, Public Health Nursing staff, and Revenue Enhancement<br />

staff is provided to relate to their specialized assignments and professional development<br />
