Round 

This weekend is Umpire 

Appreciation Round across 

the state and BFL clubs have 

been working with the 

Ballarat Football Umpires 

Association to implement 

several initiatives to make this special occasion. All 

week, BFUA Umpires have been out training with BFL 

clubs continuing to build the relationship between 

clubs and the BFUA. 

This weekend you will see all BFL clubs implement 

initiatives across the weekend to show their support 

for Umpires. All coaches of every grade across the 

BFL will shake hands with their Umpires this weekend 

in the centre of the ground before each match to 

show their support of Umpiring and reiterate the 

importance of their role in the game. 

Clubs also attended a Voluntary Club Umpire 

session last week run by the BFUA to assist our 

volunteers to be able to carry out their role to the 

best of their ability. At these sessions, Club Umpires 

trained with the BFUA going through the same drills 

they would on a weekly basis and asking questions 

throughout the session. 

Umpires are an extremely important part of our 

game and we certainly encourage clubs, players, 

officials and supporters to thank an Umpire over the 

course of this weekend for their contribution to the 

game. 

BFL Footy Show – Available on BFL Website 

The BFL Footy Show is back and bigger than ever 

and now available via the BFL website. 2011 brings 

a new format to the show that is hosted by the BFL’s 

own Liam Brady. The weekly BFL Footy Show that is 

available online every Wednesday continues to 

provide the general public with a detailed look 

over the previous week’s matches as well as looking 

ahead to the games across the weekend ahead.

Coach Accreditation – Last Course Held on 

Sunday 22nd May 

Clubs need to be aware that the final Coach 

Accreditation in Ballarat will be held on Sunday 

22nd May at Saxon House starting at 8:30am. It is a 

BFL By-Law and VCFL rule that all coaches must 

have their level 1 accreditation during the course 

of their first year of coaching to avoid any penalty 

being imposed upon the club. If clubs have any 

coaches without their accreditation, they must 

book them into this course as there won’t be any 

other opportunities for the rest of the year. 

To enroll your coaches in this course, please 

contact AFL Victoria Regional Development 

Manager Tim Shearer on 5339 0916. Clubs need to 

be aware that penalties will apply if any of your 

coaches have not obtained this level 1 

accreditation. 

McDonald’s Mark and Goal of the Year 

Don’t forget to nominate any mark or goal you see 

of a weekend you feel may be in the running for the 

McDonald’s Mark and Goal of the year. Send your

an eye on the BFL website multimedia section for 

highlights from each weekend’s matches. The Mark 

and Goal of the Year nominees will be collated at 

the end of the year and an expert panel will judge 

the winner that will be announced at the 2011 

Henderson Medal at Melton’s TabCorp Park.

MESSAGE FROM THE WORKSAFE VCFL Jock Allan 

‘Thanks Ump’ - Umpiring is an integral 

component 

Each week club coaches and supporters will 

promote that all they ask of their team is to perform 

to the best of their ability. Each player if asked will 

express that he hopes to perform to the best of his 

ability in each game. 

All umpires that take part in community football 

matches across WorkSafe VCFL are exactly the 

same and is each week aiming to perform to the 

best of their ability in the important role which they 

are undertaking for the safe conduct of each 

match. 

Far too often umpires in football are simply taken for 

granted or subjected to abuse which leads to 

many walking away from the sport. 

Feedback from umpires which leave umpiring 

continues to highlight that a major factor for their 

decision to leave is the abuse that they have been 

subjected to whilst carrying out their role as part of 

a community based sporting activity. 

Unfortunately for each umpire that decides that 

they have had enough of the abuse and stops 

umpiring then a club has to find an additional 

person to fill the role to ensure that the match can 

go ahead. 

This weekend in the AFL and across all community 

football competitions in Australia is ‘Thanks Ump’ 

round where everyone is being reminded that they 

have the opportunity to have a positive impact on 

the match day environment and through this a role 

in assisting to recruit and retain umpires. 

AFL Director of Coaching Peter Schwab has said 

this week, “umpires have a huge responsibility to 

the game, in particular at junior level where their 

capacity to control the game is paramount to the 

enjoyment and safety of all young participants.”

“Therefore they must be supported in this 

endeavour as their role is as important as anyone 

else in the game.” 

As part of the recognition of the importance of 

‘Thanking Umps’ who are filling this vital role within 

football a wide range of people will be involved as 

umpires during this weekend including AFL coaches 

and media representatives. 

Also a range of local league presidents and 

administrators are lending their support through also 

undertaking to fill umpiring roles, with some doing it 

on a weekly basis throughout the season. 

Similar to when this initiative was first undertaken last 

season coaches will in most games be following the 

lead of the AFL coaches each week and shaking 

hands with the umpires prior to the match on the 

ground. 

The most positive outcome of this activity last year 

was that there were many who recognised that it 

was a action which could be continued throughout 

the season and identify to all their players and 

supporters that they were going to be promoting a 

positive environment at their matches. 

Coaches are generally the most important people 

within a club and have the ability to have the 

greatest impact in building a positive environment 

within their membership. 

It is hoped that this season more will see the benefits 

of building upon what may could easily be 

dismissed as a one off action and through being a 

local ambassador of the ‘Thanks Ump’ campaign 

across the whole season will be a step towards 

assisting in addressing one of the biggest 

challenges facing football, having enough umpires 

to meet the match needs each week.

CYBERSAFETY – A MODERN CONUNDRUM 

Barely a week goes by these days when we do not 

see the trials and repercussions of posts, tweets, 

texts and comments in the online world having a 

serious effect on the wellbeing of individuals and 

organisations. At the time of writing we read of the 

State Government considering significant criminal 

penalties for cyberbullying and stalking. 

Whether it be cyberbullying directed towards 

children in the schoolyard, parties getting out of 

control due to gatecrashers, people losing their 

employment due to careless Facebook or Twitter 

posts, and of course, the more famous incidences 

we see that have befallen AFL and other sporting 

stars who use new communications devices 

inappropriately – the risks and potential damage 

from new technology is a real and present 

conundrum. 

The mobile phone and the home computer have 

opened up a brand new world of communications 

that has far reaching benefits to us all – but also has 

fair level of risk in the mix as well. The WorkSafe VCFL 

has in recent seasons experienced the misuse of 

various forms of social media extending into our 

sporting environment. 

It has become clear that the misuse, and a general 

lack of education about the pitfalls of technology 

is required by society in general, and in our 

experience, by those that play and administer 

football in the WorkSafe VCFL. The WorkSafe VCFL 

has been required to deal with an increasing 

number of cases in which our members are 

aggrieved and have been vilified in the content of 

posts, texts, and blogs. 

With this in mind, the VCFL engaged Susan McLean 

of Cyber Safety Solutions to develop a cyber safety 

policy that would help to protect our members from 

inappropriate behavior and to provide a process 

for members to file complaints. 

Susan McLean is Australia’s foremost expert in the 

area of cyber safety and young people and was a 

member of Victoria Police for 27 years. Widely 

known as the ‘Cyber Cop’ she was the first Victoria 

Police Officer appointed to a position involving 

Cybersafety and young people. Susan has been 

working closely with the AFL on their education 

program for players on cybersafety to educate and 

minimise the risks and harm that this type of 

communication can cause. 

The VCFL Board has determined to take the same 

view of inappropriate online material as any other 

activity that, during the playing of a game, would 


result in disciplinary action. 

Cyberbullying includes, but is not limited to, the 

following misuses of technology: harassing, teasing, 

intimidating, racially vilifying or threatening another 

person by sending or posting inappropriate or 

hurtful messages, instant messages, text messages, 

phone messages, digital pictures or images, or web 

postings (including social networking sites and 

forums) and the sending, receiving and possession 

of naked or sexually explicit images of a person. 

Club members must also be aware that postings 

from their individual accounts, whether done by 

themselves or another person will remain the 

responsibility of the account owner. We have heard 

first hand that some people have divulged their 

passwords and account details to other people 

and friends – we strongly discourage this and 

remind them of how risky this action could be. 

If a WorkSafe VCFL member feels they have been 

the victim of such misuse of technology in the 

sporting environment, it is recommended they save 

and store the material on their computer or phone. 

They should then print a copy of the material and 

immediately report the incident to the relevant club 

or league representative. 

All reports will be investigated fully in accordance 

to VCFL Rule 5.0. Any proven charges will 

automatically lead to a minimum 2 match 

suspension for a registered player, or if by a non 

playing member, a penalty as determined by the 

League. Players charged with these types of 

offences for a second or subsequent time will face 

deregistration. 

The issue of cyberbullying and cybersafety is being 

taken very seriously by the WorkSafe VCFL, and the 

implementation of this policy, along with education 

sessions across the state, will be central in further 

fostering a culture of respect and care across our 

sport. 

We call on all players, parents and officials to 

carefully read the VCFL Cybersafety Policy and 

openely discuss the issue with their family, club 

members and supporters. 

Technology is part of our everyday lives and the 

misuse of such, whether it is intentional of not, will 

not be accepted by the WorkSafe VCFL.

BALLARAT Swan’s Chatter 

Today we welcome the Darley Football Netball Club to 

Simonds Oval to what will be competitive day of football 

and netball. Both clubs will be eager to get back on the 

winning list. 

Football: Last weeks matches didn’t go to plan with all 

three sides going down. The Simonds Swans could not put 

four quarters together under the North City lights. One 

stage in the third quarter it looked like going into the final 

break chasing a big score, but to the boy’s credit got 

within a couple kicks at the final siren. 

The reserves came up against an improved opponent 

and although could not take the points showed that the 

team is not far away from stringing a few wins together. 

The Simonds Swans were able to run with the ball and find 

targets in front of goal. 

The U18.5 suffered the same fate as the seniors by not 

putting four quarters of football together. At the final break 

the Simonds Swans were out of the game. But the last 

quarter the boys lifted the intensity and their work rate and

Netball: Thank God for the Netballers. The girls were able 

to fly the flag in all matches. All teams at this stage enjoy

BACCHUS MARSH Cobra’s Chatter 

Bacchus Marsh hosted Melton South Panthers at Maddingley Park. 

In Netball, our first match saw the under 18.5s in control and leading the game 

most of the day. Our defence and mid court played an excellent game but 

unfortunately our shooters struggled with accuracy and were unable to build 

a comfortable lead. We lost Emily Howson with an ankle and Sarah Govan 

with a neck injury. The team, flustered, got on with the job but however went 

down 31-28. Our best on court were Gaby Mayne, Sarah Govan and Jacinta 

Reid. 

The C’s had slightly better fortunes but had to play hard all day. It was a close 

score line for the whole match and luckily for us we won 36-32. A great effort 

by the girls. Well done to Lindy Hawken, Sarah McGuigan and Karen 

Pawlowicz. 

The Reserves won well 67-19. It was one sided but Melton South did their best 

and again we had injuries with Kylie Morris with a knee injury and Lauren Prout 

with an ankle. Our best on the day were Siobhan Deacon, Tayler Drevensek 

and Bianca Gordon. Well done girls, keep up the good work. 

The final match of the round saw the Seniors continuing to play excellent 

netball. The girls have worked hard developing the team over the pre season 

and it’s paying off now. The Cobra’s weren’t troubled by the Panthers and 

were able to win 67-29. Well done to Noni McClure, Stacey Jeffrey and Katie 

Williams. 

And in Football, the Senior’s just did not match it against the Panthers. At no 

stage did we look like being in the Game as opposed to the previous week 

against Redan where we led almost all day but, as Captain Tyson Shea said in 

the Courier last week, “we are doing a lot of things right but we are butchering

In the U18’s we picked up the ante after last weeks indifferent effort where we 

couldn’t break into our forward 50 but this time we handled it well winning 

13.11 (89) to 6.2 (38). 

Better players - it was hard to go past Scott Howson with 7 goals, well done 

Scott. Others were Mitch Blundell, Kane Riley and Jay Johnstone.

CLUB NOTES 

Today we venture to Maddingley Park to 

take on Bacchus Marsh. The young Cobra 

side has shown some very promising signs in 

their three games so far and a desperate 

young side searching for their first win is 

always dangerous. We will need to bring our “A” game if we wish to 

maintain our unbeaten run. 

Round four was not all that successful with the club winning only 

one game of the six contested. The way the seniors were traveling, 

trailing by 39 points midway through the second term, it looked like 

we could leave Mars Oval without a win. However with Pat Cariss in 

charge in the ruck, Simon Clarke, back after a long absence, finally 

getting on target with 6 goals and Matt Medcraft very active and 

creative around the ground Sunbury drew level at three quarter 

time and an 8 goal last term saw them register a win 45 point win, 

David Kovacevic, Niall McGovern, Dillon Sharp were other sold 

contributors. 

In a very close encounter the Reserves just could not snatch victory 

from Redan going down by 2 points. Mark Freeth, Jacob Brewer,

half time, a seven goal to one third quarter by Redan put an end to

Brough as our senior Netball coach. We welcome Kobee to the 

club. The happiest person at the club at the moment is President Phil 

who can now hand over the coaching role to Kobee. Against 

Redan all 3 teams again competed very well and showed further 

improvement in their game plans however they were not successful. 

With the players continued enthusiasm and improvement and the 

experience and knowledge of Kobee hopefully the sides’ first 

success is not far away.

After our bye last week we should be raring to go again. 

The under eighteen boys have a big challenge today. 

It was a very good effort against Melton South 2 weeks ago. 

We ran into some good form and that needs to continue 

on 

to beat the better sides. 

The reserves also played very well and are improving every 

week. This will be another good game and it will be the 

continuing improvement of our younger boys that we are 

all needing to see. 

The seniors will have a hungry Redan side on the rebound. 

Neither team will want to drop this game so it will be another 

classic Lakers V Redan contest. We have been playing 

some very good footy and will need to be at our best again 

today to get over the line. 

The netballers are all travelling well and are keen for a good 

hitout today agains Redan. Our senior girls will be officially

CLUB NOTES 

Today we tackle Lake Wendouree in a 

match which will tell us a lot in regards to 

the rest of the season, and is a match 

both clubs would love to win. We should 

see a good match today. 

Last week saw the Seniors suffer a loss to Sunbury. After a good 

1st half which saw us hold a narrow lead at ½ time, Sunbury hit 

back strongly in the 2nd half, with the scores level at ¾ time but 

we were unable to maintain the effort in the last quarter. We will 

have learnt much from the game and will come out much 

stronger for it today. 

The Reserves recorded a narrow 2pt win last week to get back 

on the winners list. After a good 1st quarter, Sunbury hit back in 

the 2nd quarter to hold a narrow lead at ½ time. The boys 

regrouped and came out firing in the 3rd quarter to open a 

handy break at ¾ time and were able to hold the lead to record 

the narrow win. Austin Murphy did well in front of goal kicking 5 

goals. 

The U/18.5’s also recorded a good win last week to remain 

unbeaten at this stage of the season. The started well in the 1st 

quarter to open a handy lead, maintained that in the 2nd 

quarter, then came out firing in the 3rd quarter kicking 7 goals 

to 1 to open up a handy break and were able to maintain that 

advantage until the end. Mitchell Phelps and Matthew Cullinan 

both kicked 6 goals in a good effort in front of goal.

Got invited to a BBQ last. Little did I know it was one of those 'work 

before you eat' days. He had built this monster pergola using steel 

from SGA Engineering. Actually he couldn't speak highly enough of 

Ted and Derek, who not only gave him a great deal, but were also 

very helpful with design and hints. My mate had nailed Scott and 

Brad at Melton Timber and Hardware for the flooring, and needed 

some labour to help lay it. Enter me and a few other buddies. We 

finally got to have that BBQ late in the day, and it came up a treat. 

My mate has already hit up Paul at Wida Plumbing Supplies for the 

guttering and downpipes, and has invited me around for another BBQ 

this week. Sorry but I’ll be busy for next 6 months watching the footy 

and netball!! 

The Cables Plus Panthers entered new territory last week, a day game. 

Our U/18 netballers had no problems adjusting to day light and had 

a nail biting finish over the strong Cobras. Unfortunately our other 

grades of netball couldn’t capitalize. A huge congratulations to 

Shannon ‘Shagga’ Davies who plays her 200th game for the Panthers 

this week. Shannon has been a long serving and loyal member of the 

club helping as a volunteer and being widely regarded as one of our 

club greats winning numerous club B&F trophies. Well done Shagga 

on this wonderful achievement and best of luck today! 

Our young cubs eyes didn’t adjust so well to day light and were 

jumped in the last by the Cobras and couldn’t claw their way back 

into the game. Some good individual efforts but this isn’t going to win 

the big games on the big grounds come September. The reserves

lack lustre start to the season continued with 

the biggest lost to date. Hats off to the 

opposition who ran harder and were more 

determined to win the congested ball. Lack 

of numbers had our boys legs tiering mid 

way through the third only to let the game spill wide open. Hang in 

there boys. 

The seniors continued their strong start to the season with hard in and 

under football and absolute commitment and pressure from our 

younger players. Although winless so far this year, the young Cobras 

had been competitive in both their losses, so the equally young 

Panthers could not afford to take them lightly. Our pressure and 

tackling was very high and is reminds me of the team that took shape 

in the early 2000’s. This group of players is playing for each other as 

evidenced by the multiple goal scores and strong leadership from old 

and new. Rex played his best game for the club with strong pack 

marks at both ends of the ground and doing the grunt of the work in 

the hardest position on the ground, while Boofa, Manny, Sully, Notman 

and Peters made us all take notice of what could be our clubs future. 

Let’s continue to work hard at home against a very strong North 

Ballarat line up. 

Social functions – today is ladies day followed by a club function 

following the game. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased form

CLUB NOTES 

What a difference a week makes. The 

Metricon bloods, thirsty for a win, turned on 

their best performance for the season 

against an outclassed Darley outfit. Some 

around the club think it is the best 

performace they have seen for years. King Cam McKinley top 

scored with 6 goals, taking out the Golden Fleece Hotel best on 

ground award. The crowd in the new “Bloods Bunker” certainly 

enjoyed the evening. The Wida Plumbing Reserves and the Harrison 

Toyota Under 18.5s did not fare so well with both teams going down. 

The unders with new coach Gary Mitchell at the helm started off 

well but faded in the latter stages of the game. 

Last week all WILTRANS Netball teams fought hard against Darley 

who have scored a few top recruits. The U18.5’s missed Darcy 

Mangion in defense who is still out with injury but put up a good 

fight. The girls going down in the end to a stronger side. A great 

game in the C Grade with the score up and down all game. Bloods 

were up by one in the last quarter but couldn’t hold on, the game 

ending in a draw. Nadine Webber playing her first game back 

played well as did Aimee Vieth. The reserves game was also very 

close in the first half, but Bloods came out strong in the second and 

proved to be stronger in defense, winning by 7 goals against an 

unbeaten Darley. The seniors started well but were lacking height. 

Darley proved to be too tall and too strong, and stole the 4 points. 

This week we play Sebastopol and are looking for wins across the 

board. Good Luck to all the girls.

MELTON Blood’s Banter 

are up in the club rooms and seats are filling fast, there is also a bus 

list up in the club rooms if anyone requires a lift there and home. This 

year we have both a band and DJ performing and always proves 

to be a good night so make sure you don’t miss out. Our First Last 

Man Standing is also not far away 4th June, and Gunny will be 

around the club selling tickets. 

This week has us on the road to Sebastopol. The Burras at home are 

as usual expected to rise to the occasion. This is never a game to 

take lightly and if conditions are wet, the bloods had better be on 

their guard. After the game the Ballarat Leagues Club are playing 

host for our annual club visit. All players and supported are invited to 

drop into the Members bar at around 6 o’clock where Roger will put 

on some finger food as well as ensuring a cold one will be on tap. If 

you feel like staying on for dinner it might pay book early. 

All players and supporters please note that this week is the “Thanks 

Ump” round. You may not agree with every decision they make but 

they are out there doing a job. Without them our game cannot 

proceed, so please make an effort to acknowledge the work the 

Umpires do and say thanks. As part of umpires week, Melton hosted 

a visit at training by the BFUA umpires this week. We thank them for 

attending and hope that everyone got something out of the visit.

WHITE RIBBON DAY 

The Ballarat Football and Netball League support the local White Ribbons Day campaign. White Ribbon Day is a 

campaign by men to end violence against women. 

White Ribbon Day – Ballarat 

The White Ribbon Day Campaign was established in 1991 by a handful of Canadian men following the massacre of 14 

women in Montreal. Their aim was to urge to urge men to speak out against violence against women. 

The White Ribbon campaign has spread around the world with Australia becoming a major contributor to the campaign. 

In 2008 the Commonwealth Government allocated funding to the White Ribbon Foundation. 2008 also saw more than 

300,000 ribbons distributed across the country. 

The Ballarat White Ribbon Day Committee (BWRDC) was established in 2004 to work on the Ballarat White Ribbon Day 

Campaign. Since then the committee has been raising the profile of White Ribbon day by distributing White Ribbons, 

inviting men in the community to be White Ribbon Ambassadors, advertising in the media and talking at community 

functions and schools. 

The Ballarat White Ribbon Committee welcomes the support of the Ballarat Football and Netball league and the CEO of 

the League Rod Ward.

BFUA UMPIRES REPORT 

As you are aware, this weekend 14th & 15th May, is the second 

‘Umpiring is Every-one’s Business’ campaign ‘Thanks Ump’ 

round. 

‘Thanks Ump’ round and its lead up week has involved a 

number of initiatives. club visits, club umpire coaching sessions, 

newspaper articles, radio discussions and this article in the footy 

record. All initiatives which have highlighted football clubs and 

umpires working together to make umpiring environments more 

attractive. 

A major initiative during this week has been umpires heading 

out to clubs to provide first hand assistance during training.. At 

this session, umpires assisted and participated in the sessions, 

answered questions and basically provide the opportunity to 

further build relationships.

It is an important fact to acknowledge that feedback received 

from umpires who have left the sport indicates that a major 

reason umpires decide to give up is the abuse that they are 

subjected to. The challenge, therefore, continues to be how we 

are able to assist in making the match day environment more 

conducive to having umpires, particularly young umpires, 

continue in the sport for extended periods. 

We all understand that umpires, coaches, footballers, 

administrators and supporters all make mistakes and at times 

show poor judgement. This is not the issue. It’s how we deal with 

these issues that matters. 

This weekend you’ll see coaches and umpires shaking hands in 

the middle of the ground prior to the commencement of 

matches, players, coaches and umpires shaking hands at the 

end of the match, all small things that are designed to improve 

the match day environment on umpiring. The question is why 

doesn’t this happen every week? 

All umpires that take part in community football matches across 

WorkSafe VCFL are exactly the same and is each week aiming 

to perform to the best of their ability in the important role which 

they are undertaking for the safe 

conduct of each match. 

‘Thanks Ump’ round reminds everyone that they have the 

opportunity to have a positive impact on the match day 

environment and through this a role in assisting to recruit and 

retain umpires. 

AFL Director of Coaching Peter Schwab has said this week, 

“umpires have a huge responsibility to the game, in particular 

at junior level where their capacity to control the game is 

paramount to the enjoyment and safety of 

all young participants.” 

“Therefore they must be supported in this endeavour as their 

role is as important as anyone else in the game.” 

The most positive outcome of this activity last year was that 

there were many who recognised that it was a action which 

could be continued throughout the season and identify to all 

their players and supporters that they were going to be 

promoting a positive environment at their matches. 

Coaches are generally the most important people within a club 

and have the ability to have the greatest impact in building a 

positive environment within their membership. 

It is hoped that this season more will see the benefits of building 

upon what may be able to easily be dismissed. The ‘Thanks 

Ump’ campaign across the whole season will be a step towards 

assisting in addressing one of the biggest challenges facing 

football, having enough umpires to meet the match needs 

each week. 

The BFUA looks forward to strengthening relations, visiting clubs 

and continuing to develop our great game.

Last weekends action saw big wins to Bacchus 

Marsh, East Point, Darley and Ballarat. They were all 

too strong for their rivals and would all be delighted 

with their wins! 

The ladder is slowly taking shape with Bacchus 

Marsh and East Point in first position and second 

position respectively with both on 16 points. Redan, 

Darley & Lake Wendouree are all next on 12 points 

and Ballarat is in 6th position on 8 points. The Lake 

Wendouree Redan game this week is match of the 

round with both teams desperate to catch the top 

2 teams. 

BALLARAT V DARLEY 

This match is shaping up to be a great contest and 

expect the game to go right down to the wire. 

Darley would be delighted with their start to the 

season, but if they are to be a contender this year 

and make the finals, these are the games they 

need to win. They will be fighting for a spot in the 

finals with teams like Ballarat. 

Ballarat on the other hand are coming off a big win 

last week against North Ballarat City and they will 

be hoping to take that good form line into this 

week’s action. 

Ballarat will need to contain Olivia Aughton and 

Elyce Carlyle from Darley who have both been in 

terrific early season form. Darley may just have a bit 

too much class right across the court and may 

account for Ballarat in a thrilling game!

LAKE WENDOUREE V REDAN 

The Lake Wendouree team will be looking forward 

to playing some netball today after an interrupted 

start to the season where they have only played 2 

games so far. Lakers will be unveiling their 

Premiership Flag from last year (4th in a row) so 

once again congratulations to Sally McLean and all 

involved on last years premiership! 


BFLNA Netball Report 

Lakers will be hoping for a good win today while the 

Redan side will come ready to play and hoping to 

cause a big upset. The Redan teams form this year 

has been very good and these are the games they 

need to take it right up to the opposition if they are 

to be a contender for the premiership this year! I 

suspect Lake Wendouree will once again have too 

much class for their opposition. 

Lake Wendouree by 19g 

MELTON SOUTH V NORTH BALLARAT CITY 

Both teams will view this as a winnable game and 

both will be hoping to record their first victory of the 

season. North Ballarat City are much more 

competitive this year and they will be hoping for 

steady improvement throughout the season. 

Melton South suffered a heavy defeat to Bacchus 

Marsh last week and they will be hoping for nothing 

less than a victory today. 

At home Melton South may be too strong but 

expect this game to be close early on.

SEBASTOPOL V MELTON 

Both teams suffered defeats last week and this is a 

real opportunity for both teams to record the 4 

points. Both teams are on 8 points and the winner 

could be inside the top 6 if results go their way over 

the weekend. 

Sebastopol and Melton will view this game as a 

game they should win so expect the looser to walk 

away from the match very disappointed. At home, 

Sebastopol may be a fraction too strong.

THE VERDICT By the Couriers Gav McGrath 

There are three teams in the BFL that are yet taste victory 

this season. That is a simple fact and we have reported it in 

The Courier. 

Once we start analysing “why” they are yet to taste victory, 

it becomes more complicated. Because it involves a 

degree of speculation and opinion. 

Is it inexperience, or lack of ability, or injury, or lack of fitness, 

or morale, or a lack of discipline, or depth, or any one of a 

host of other reasons? Or a combination of some or all 

these? 

Plenty of people have an opinion on what the reason in 

each case is. You only have to have a gander at the 

internet to work that out. 

The reporter's challenge is to make sure his or her opinion is 

as informed and considered as it can be. 

After four rounds we have developed some thoughts on 

the “why”. Some of those thoughts are based on what 

what we have seen. Some is based on what we suspect. 

The good thing is after five rounds we will have 25 percent 

more information to deal with.

Why is Darley struggling? Is it mainly lack of experience, a 

lack of fitness, or lack of morale? We should get a clearer 

picture after they take on Ballarat. The Devils don't have to 

win. What they need to show is some character and spirit, 

and if a lack of experience means they don't get over the 

line, then so be it. 

Why is Bacchus Marsh so hot and cold in every game it 

plays? Is it due to a lack of leadership, a lack of ability or a 

lack of discipline? What better test than the might of 

Sunbury? Again, the Cobras don't have to win, but they 

need to retain some order while under fire and if they aren't 

good enough, so be it. 

And what about Sebas? Why have they come up short 

despite a red-hot go each week? Sure there have been 

some unfortunate injuries but what about the much talked 

about improvement in depth? Let's see against Melton. 

There are questions to be answered in the Melton South 

versus North City match too, and the Lakers and Redan 

clash as well. 

Most of those questions are less vexing than those that 

involve some of the other clubs, at least for their supporters. 

Why? Because when the fact is you are winning, 

sometimes you don't have to worry too much about why. 


BFL: City keeps Swans at bay 

COMING off an unexpected win against Redan at its last start, 

North Ballarat City faced yet another premiership contender in 

Ballarat. 

Just as Peach’s North City passed its earlier test, it came through 

with flying colours in its second exam, defeating the Simonds Swans 

by 12 points and confirming itself as a genuine contender for 

season 2011. 

Against an opponent well suited to playing on big grounds, North 

Ballarat City got the fast start it needed and then kept the Swans 

at bay for the entire match. 

Ballarat finished with three more scoring shots, but pressure was a

second term with Ash Baker finding plenty of the ball and bobbing 

up to kick two second quarter goals, as the Swans closed within 

seven points at half time. 

Tyler George then gave North City the perfect start to the third 

term, slotting through a goal on the run inside the first couple of 

minutes. This gave North its spark. Michael Williams stood tall with 

three goals in the third term and, when ruckman Scott Howard 

marked and goaled just before three quarter time, the lead was 

out to 33 points. 

Ballarat responded to the a massive challenge on its hands with 

Mark Nunn and Shane Hutchinson goaling and, when Nunn kicked 

his second of the term at the 15 minute mark, Ballarat was within 

11 points and on a roll. 

To North’s credit, though, the black-and-whites dug deep and 

were able to hold off a fast-finishing Ballarat. 

“Ballarat is a top two side and we lost a couple of guys late. The 

game could have gone either way so to hold on was fantastic,” 

Waters said. 

For the victors, Michael Williams, Jason McNamara and Jake Hicks 

were outstanding, while Ash Baker and Matt Smith were among 

Ballarat’s best.

exciting new partnership with 

Nth Melbourne FC !! 

The mecu Ballarat FNL are thrilled to advise that we have 

entered into an historic new partnership with the North 

Melbourne FC. 

Under this Agreement, the Ballarat FNL and the North 

Melbourne FC will enter into a mutually supportive 

partnership that is expected to benefit both 

organisations, and further extend the Nth Melbourne FC’s 

ties with the greater Ballarat region. 

Under the arrangement, each party will provide the 

following support to each other: 

1) NMFC COMMITMENT TO BALLARAT FNL - 

The NMFC supply a senior listed player or Coach/Asst 

Coach at the following league events (which are now 

listed in “event priority” and which include dates) in 2011 

– 

- The Ballarat FNL Henderson Medal (our “Brownlow”) - 

which attracts over 450 people. Date: Sunday 11th

Rod Ward, CEO of the Ballarat FNL and the MCDFNL said 

the historic arrangement is believed to be the 1st of its 

type between an AFL Club and a country League, and 

is certain to have a positive impact on football fans in the 

Region, “It is estimated that over ½ million people will 

attend all Senior and Junior fixtures across both leagues 

in 2011, and there is no doubt that country footy fans will 

certainly welcome the opportunity to have such 

increased opportunities to meet and learn from 

representatives of the NMFC under the opportunities 

presented in this Agreement. The NMFC already has 

strong ties to the greater Ballarat region and the people 

of regional Victoria through their Agreements with the Nth
