Interleague campaign
begins !
The 2010 Ballarat FL
Senior football & netball Interleague campaign
began last Wednesday night, when
approximately 60 players attended Maddingley
Park to kick off our 2010 campaign, and
approximately 40 players attended Under 18
training at Darley Park.
The 2010 WorkSafe VCFL Challenge games will
see the Ballarat FL tackle the Geelong FL in
Senior & Under 18 football, and Senior and
Under 18 Netball at the Eastern Oval in Ballarat
on Saturday May 22nd.
Congratulations to those chosen in the initial
Senior Football squad under Coach Kieran
Murrihy and in the Under 18 side under Chris
Gleeson (full squad listed elsewhere in this
weeks Footy Record). Exclusion from the squad
at this point does not mean that players cannot
force their way into either side, as no doubt
injuries & form will play a big part in who makes
the final cut. The Netball squads will also kick off
training shortly under Senior Coach Jess
MacGowan and Under 18 Coach Maria
Kavanagh-Nunn.
Coaching Accreditation
Just a reminder that all Ballarat FL, Lexton
Plains FL and Maryborough Castlemaine
DFNL clubs need to be aware that it is a VCFL
requirement for all coaches to have a level 1
coaching accreditation in their 1st year of
Coaching.
This means that if clubs have appointed any
coaches without this accreditation, they MUST
attend one of the courses being run by AFL
Victoria sometime this year. This is a VCFL
requirement and clubs may risk penalties for non
compliance.
For details on the remaining dates for the
Courses being run in Victoria please visit the AFL
field of play, since the official foundation of the league in 1893. The Ballarat FNL
Hall of Fame will celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding players, coaches,
administrators, media personalities and any others who have made a substantial
and distinctive contribution to the promotion of the league. These contributions will
have demonstrated leadership and vision and will have been widely recognized in
our local communities.
The Ballarat FL & Netball Association is now calling for suitable
nominations for consideration as part of the 2010 Hall of Fame “inductions”.
Nominations close COB Friday 7th May 2010 and please contact your Club
Secretary for Nomination Forms.
All nominations will be forwarded to the Ballarat FNL CEO Rod Ward on the
CLUB NOTES
Swan’s Chatter
www.ballaratfc.com
SWANS CHATTER
Today we play host to our old rivals in Redan FNC and as over
the many years both clubs play for the Dunstan Cup. The cup over
the last couple of seasons has been with Redan so hopefully
today will stay at Dahlsens Park.
Also today the Dahlsens Swans celebrate 2000 games and is
quite fitting that Redan FNC will be part of that milestone.
Dahlsens Swans will be keen to continue the good start to the
season and Redan will be looking to get back on the winning list
again.
Football: The seniors found a more difficult opponent in East
Point. The first three quarters produced scrappy play which wasn’t
helped with a heavy down pour just before half time. However the
Dahlsens Swans were able to take control in the final quarter and
went on to record a convincing win.
The reserves were looking for their second win on the trot but a
some what lethargic first half had them well behind at the large
break. However the second half saw the Dahlsens Swans lift and
at one stage could have got within seven points during the last
quarter. The swans played much better football in the last quarter,
but fell short at the final siren.
The U18.5 recorded their first win for the season against East
Point who we have had not much success against in the past. The
Grand Final replay produced a very good game. At one stage
early in the third quarter the Dahlsens Swans were 23 points down
but lifted to come from behind a record a hard fought 7 point
victory.
Netball: The successes were evenly shared throughout the four
games last week. The Dahlsens Swans tasted victory in the
Reserves and ‘C’ grade sides with the U18.5 and seniors been
beaten in their respective games. Today’s games against Redan
will prove just as tough but hoping for four victories.
Around the Club: Every Saturday after the game enjoy a delicious
meal prepared by Kate the Club’s resident Chef.
Social News: Players Auction tonight. Come along to one of the
main functions of the year. Bring your cash, cheque book and
have fun in bidding for your favourite lots. Night of Legends
Lion’s Den
www.redanfc.vcfl.com.au
LIONS DEN
www.redanfc.com.au
Today we take on the inform Ballarat team, who have started the
season well to record 2 good wins. We will need to be at our best today
if we are to get the win today to remain near the top of the ladder.
Last week saw the Seniors record a draw with the Lakers. After we got
off to a good start, the Lakers fought back strongly to nearly claim the 4
points. The rain that came through about ½ way through the game
appeared to turn the match around as the Lakers adapted to the
conditions better to get back into the game. We will need to make sure
we adapt better to these conditions throughout the season.
The Reserves recorded a good win last week to get their 1st win of the
season under their belt. This was a good team effort with Byran & Tom
combining well up forward to cap off all the good work being done
further up the ground. We will need to maintain that effort again today if
we are to defeat Ballarat.
The U/18.5’s recorded another good win last week in another good
team effort and will be out to repeat that effort again today.
The Netballers had a bad day on the court last week with all 4 teams
suffering defeats in their games. Today against Ballarat we will be out to
reverse last weeks results and get 4 wins on the board today. It will not
be easy but the girls will give it best shot.
After the game today it is back to the Lake View hotel for a couple of
drinks.
Saturday May 15th we have a Trivia/Auction night coming up
Also the Annual Ball is coming up on Saturday June 5th.
We have Last Man Standing tickets now selling. This will be held on
Sunday July 18th in The Den commencing at 12 noon. Tickets are $100
each with $10,000 of white goods as 1st prize, along with spot prizes.
Get your tickets as soon as you can.
Devil’s Diary
www.darleyfc.com.au
A big Welcome to our cross town rivals, the Bacchus Marsh
Football Netball Club on the Devils 1st home game if the year.
Up for grabs is the Greg Light – Laurie Wheelahan Memorial
Award and we welcome Michelle Light & Lucille Wheelahan for
the occasion.
Last week saw mixed results with the Devils winning 4 of the 7
contests against Sunbury, with only one being on the football
field.
FOOTBALL
The Seniors started off strongly however missed opportunity and
lapses at crucial times proved the difference with the better team
Sunbury winning on the night. A lot of positives from the loss and
looking forward to building over the season. Best for Darley was
Drew Edwards with Leonard, Young, Burns, Herring & Minns
also solid contributors on the night.
The Reserves saw a great contest where the boys came from
behind to knock of the Eastern Lions in a gripping contest by less
than a goal. Best were Harbottle, Mayfosh, Freestone, Guys,
Harrington & McKay (welcome back Skinny).
The Unders were simply under manned against the stronger
Sunbury combination Although trying hard all day the boys were
always up against after losing the ‘bench’ for the second half.
Best for the Devils were Brigham, Lang, Humphrey, Mayfosh, S.
Pawczynski & Davie
NETBALL
Under’s tried hard all game but Sunbury’s defence was just too
strong went down by 6, Best; Meg Harbottle. Well done to C
Grade on their first win by 50 goals Best: Briana Bendelle. A
great team effort by the B grade saw them have a comfortable
win by 39 goals Best: Alix Ferri. Also A Grade won quiet well,
with Bronwyn Coffey shooting 46 out of 61 goals Best: Bronwyn
Coffey. Well done girls, let’s keep it up this week
We would like to Thank everyone that turned up at our working
CLUB NOTES
Cobra’s Chatter
www.bacchusmarshfc.vcfl.com.au
Cobra Chatter for 30 April 2010
This week saw the Cobra’s take on North Ballarat City at Maddingley Park in beautiful
sunny conditions and the Cobra girls did not disappoint.
The U18.5’s, in a mixed effort with inconsistent play allowed North City back into the
game but the girls held on to win 24-18. Well done to Sarah Govan, Jacinta Reid and
Jessie Braudigom who featured in best on court.
Our C Grade girls had a fantastic win over North City taking out the match 67-13.
Congratulations to Bernie Walsh who debuted on Saturday – normally our team
umpire. Bernie’s experience along with Karen Pawlowicz saw our goalers dominate.
Well done to our best on Court – Karen Pawlowicz, Bernie Walsh and Lorrae Closter.
The Reserves continued the trend winning 51-8. A great team game and a reflection
of their training efforts. Well done to Jess Shaw, Rachelle Barnard and Vanessa
Mayne.
The long weekend allowed us to rotate some Reserves into the Seniors team.
Congratulations to under 18.5 captain Jacinta Reid on making her senior debut for the
Club. With a winning score of 72-12 it was a great win. Well done to Noni McClure,
Linda Powell and Olivia Phyland for their efforts.
In Senior football, we won by 1 goal which was a welcome win to our Club who, like
North Ballarat City are, in both Netball & Football rebuilding with no big recruitment
campaign over the summer.
However, for the Marsh, this Game saw 9 players having their 2nd Game and 2 their
1st. They were Chris Suban and Josh Robson, who both acquitted themselves very
well. Better players were James Dickinson, Tyson Shea, Declan Phyland, Matthew
Whittle and Mark Hanson
There isn’t a lot to talk about when you look at the score line for the Reserves but it
just goes to show what sport is all about – participation and we are grateful for every
time the players come out to play for our Club. Well done lad’s but it might help if one
or more got to training and gave Coach Crash Craddock something to work with.
The Under 18.5’s was an enthralling Game where both teams fought it out right to the
end. There was only a 3 Goal difference with North leading in the final term but our
lads couldn’t peg it back. Coach Ricky Millar was very happy with the boys and
praised their efforts.
Better players for the Cobra’s were Nick Mazzini, Brandon Hughes, Xavier Kearney,
Jesse Dunmore, David Dickinson and Matthew Denham.
What a great night we had last Saturday. Apologies to our Members and North
Ballarat City that we had to close our Bar at the Club at 6pm however we had to open
another at the Shire Hall at 7pm for our Sportsperson’s Night. A sell out with 340 in
attendance and a great night was had by all.
Special mention to Jason Akermanis who took a knock to the head playing for the
Doggies on Friday Night but turned out to do a great routine for us, while suffering very
bad headaches and being physically ill – super effort Jason.
Last Tuesday evening saw David Smorgon, Western Bulldogs President visit our Club
for a meal and talk to us about how Club’s can build and rebuild. He discussed the
similarities of the Cobra’s and the Bulldogs – we might be miles apart but we are very
similar, We need to forget the obvious Salary Cap difference of about $7.975 million
but what a delight for our Club to have a man of his calibre encapsulate his life story
in 30 minutes – you could have heard a pin drop. Thank you David.
Don’t forget the 8th May when we will have our Bacchus Marsh Cup Race Night at our
Club Rooms commencing at 7pm. For tickets see or ring Jane on 0402 046 277,
Rachelle on 0412 131 224 or Chris on 0409 705 239. Judging by the Sports Night, I
wouldn’t wait.
CLUB NOTES
Blood’s Banter
www.meltonfc.vcfl.com.au
Bloods Banter Round 3
Round three is upon us and the Metricon Bloods are sitting
third on the ladder with 2 out of 2 wins under our belts. The
ANZAC Day match was another cliffhanger with the bloods
grabbing the lead late in the last quarter to snatch a 4 point
win. Jake Gleeson took the honours with a B.O.G.
performance. The win thrilled our 2000 side who turned up in
force to celebrate their 10 year premiership reunion against
Sebastapol. The Burras were certainly out to set the record
straight and as usual put up a great game. The Golden Fleece
Reserves went down as did our under 18.5 lads. On the
Netball front, the girls posted 3 out of 4 wins with the Under
18.5s scoring a massive 52 to 2 win.
Many thanks to Nabby for organising the 2000 Grand Final
Reunion. It was great to see so many past players turn up to
swap a few yarns. The boys certainly enjoyed themselves well
into the evening.
Thank you also to Patto, Sarge and the Vietnam Veterans for
organising and conducting the ANZAC Day memorial service.
Today’s match against Sunbury will prove another test of the
resurgent Bloods. The Eastern Lions are sitting one spot above
us on percentage and will be keen to defend their position.
Don’t forget the Meltonian’s Special Effort next week at Maccy
Park after the Darley game. See Barts or Gleeso to book your
spot for a chance to win the big prize.
Also the following week May 15th after the Redan game is our
visit to the Ballarat Leagues Club. Win lose or draw, players,
officials and supporters are all invited back for a cool drink and
some nibbles before heading home.
Also coming up on the social side is the Meltonians Dogs night
on Saturday May 29th at The Meadows. This is always a great
night. Seats are limited so book early. A bus will be available
As always a lot of membership money is still due.
Round 3 sees the Sunbury Lions travel to MacPherson Park to
play Melton in what promises to be a spirited encounter.
Sunbury and Melton are both undefeated in season 2010, and
this contest is sure to be competitive and unrelenting.
In Round 2 action, the Lions seniors ground out a solid victory
to defeat Melton South 14.8.92 to 7.8.50. The first quarter of
the game was dominated by the Lions who kicked away to a
four goal lead at quarter time. To Melton South’s credit, the
second quarter was all theirs seeing the difference between the
sides reduced to only one goal at half-time., The second half
saw much better conversion and linking up from Sunbury which
resulted in them piling on winning by seven goals. Best
players included Jamie Lobb, Ben Jordan, Ross Sleight, and
Daniel Cullinan who kicked seven majors on debut.
The reserves were successful with them winning by 32 points,
kicking 9.9.63 to 4.7.31. Best players for the reserves included
Brendan Smith, Cam Thill, and Ben Sleight. The Under 18.5s
game was a one-sided affair, seeing the Lions victorious
24.13.157 to 1.1.7. Best for Sunbury were Cam Burrows,
James Fedoruk, Steven Fogarty, Mark Freeth, Matt Medcraft,
and Tim Hill.
On the netball front, the seniors were defeated 33-44 in a
much-improved display. The reserves won 34-27, C grade
were defeated 19-35, and the Under 18.5s won 23-9.
The Lions would also like to acknowledge two of our sponsors
for the 2010 season. Sunbury Professional Landscaping is
again one of our scoreboard sponsors and it’s great to
welcome them back for 2010. We also welcome new sponsor
Middendorp Gisborne to the Lions for this season. Please get
behind these sponsors and support them the way they support
our club.
On a social note, don’t forget to book your tickets at the Social
Club for a night of great entertainment provided by “Hell
Freezes Over” on 29 May 2010, and our fantastic Players
Welcome back home for Rd 3 as we host North City
FNC.
Thanks goes out to Melton FNC for hosting this year’s
annual Anzac day service to honour our past soldiers.
But it’s also good to return home after such a thrilling and
tiresome day.
The senior footballers went down to a very determined
Melton side by only 4pts. Better players on the day
included Coach Kal Young, Sam Jenkins and Brad
Neurath with support coming from Micheal Powell, Brent
Van Gils and one of our new players Rueben Hayden,
who is always deep in play. It’s wonderful to see such
improvement on last year and we will enjoy watching you
progress as the season unfolds.
How great to report the Reserves side sit on top of the
ladder after winning the first 2 rounds. Keep up the hard
work and pressure boys looking good! Matthews and
Fitzpatrick were again amongst the stand out players,
with M. Kickett McIntosh Bertalli and Douglas also
gaining best player mentions on the day.
Jake is doing wonders with a very small team list, the
U18s also won rd 2s game against Melton. With a
limited bench it took a whole team effort to get the 44pt
victory, with Tony Lockyer being a handy inclusion, Luke
Parker showing more of his aerial skills and Peter
Colbourne also continuing his determination to get the
ball- it was another well earned victory. Great team work
boys!
Over to the Netball and the C Grade were able to get a
victory on the board with a 32 V 25 goal win. Stand out
player for that game being Jane Bruty, well done Jane!
The senior girls went down 31 V 48g to Melton, maybe a
loss but great to see the young girls improving so much
after only 2 games. Reserves and U18s were also
defeated but show alot of potential to improve each
week. Belinda has ways of toughening you all up a little
bit I hear...
Thanks for supporting the SFNC in season 2010 and
please don’t forget to get behind our sponsor’s
CLUB NOTES
North’s Notes
www.northcity.com.au
A mixed bag of results for the club last weekend
as we took the trip down the highway to the
snake pit.
The senior footballers got off to good start but
couldn’t finish on the scoreboard. It was to prove
costly as Bacchus took advantage of the wind in
the second quarter and held on to win by a goal.
Better players on the day were Nathan Barnes,
Josh McDermott and Shaun Lyle.
The reserve footballers got off to a strong start
and never broke stride, winning the game by 158
points. Tom Eltringham and Aaron Clarke were
unstoppable up forward kicking 9 and 5 goals
respectively. Kyle Baddeley also played a great
game.
The under 18.5s remain undefeated after a solid
5 goal victory. Big Tom McGregor played a great
game kicking 4 goals and was well supported by
Branden Sternberg, Jarryd Graham and Mick
Nolan.
The netballers dug deep all day but
unfortunately came away empty handed, the
U18s coming closest with a 6 goal loss. Better
players on the day in the A grade were Steph
Barker and Katrina Reymond, B Grade-
Courtney Harrison and Sarah McGaffin, C
Grade- Jo Byrne and Kim Creswell and U18s
Maighan Fogas and Krista Hay.
Stick in their girls and the results will come.
Laker’s Notes
www.lakers.vcfl.com.au
Welcome to everyone for the Lakers first home game of the 2010
season.
Good luck to everyone from East Point in all grades.
A special welcome to all those who are attending today’s game for
the start of the YCW reunion. Enjoy our hospitality and have a
great time catching up with old friends.
The reunion will continue at the mining exchange tonight, kicking
off at 7.30pm.
We are sure that today’s game will be an entertaining one, as it
always is between Lakers and East Point.
The Lakers need to continue their good second half form that they
showed against Redan.
After a slow start we worked hard to get ourselves back into the
game. Our inaccuracy cost us in the finish. Lets take the same
attitude and work rate into today’s game.
The reserves also got off to a slow start. We found ourselves five
or six goals down at half time. We fought hard and the further the
game went the better we played. With quite a few new faces in the
team It took a while for players to find their feet. There is alot of
scope for improvement in this team. Work hard today as you need
a win under your belt early.
The under eighteens were similar to the reserves. They started to
play better football in patches as the game went on. The Redan
boys were probably a long way in front of us in their preparation –
and it showed. Make sure you work hard on the track as you have
the makings of a good outfit. Also need to get the four points
today.
After starting the season with a bye in the split opening round the
netballers were keen to play their first Lakers match. Redan are
historically a very strong club & with their new recruits we knew
this season would be no exception. Last year’s grand final
rematch in the U18 proved a tough contest with Redan taking an
early lead. Lakers fought back to win the game by 4 goals. Our C
grade is a combination of new, returning & current players. The
girls performed well & will improve with match practice. A great
start winning by 8 goals. The reserves was also a grand final
rematch with Lakers turning the tables on Redan. A number of
new recruits teamed with Lakers stalwarts & the game was evenly
matched until half time. Lakers set up a win in the 3rd quarter
shooting 17 goals to 4, eventually winning the game by 14 goals.
The seniors had a tough task against Redan goaling combination
Phoebe Knox & Emma Henry but Emma Burton & Mel Gale did a
great job in defence. Accurate goaling & strong play through the
centre court gave the Lakers a 12 goal win. Great job by all the
netballers to get 4 from 4 in our 1st outing of the season.
We wish Sally all the best with her operation this week, and look
forward to seeing up and about again.
Go Lakers
Kanga’s Corner – Round 3
Today we meet an up and running Lakers at their home ground in what
should be a real challenge for all our football and netball teams. We
haven’t had the start we wanted with losses again last week in the
Senior and Under 18.5 football, Reserves and C Grade netball. It has
been some time since we have found ourselves in this position (low
ladder) and today’s game and the coming weeks will put to test our
character, grit and determination to get back on board and once again
be the competitive football and netball teams we know we can be. The
Under 18.5 Netball team had a strong win last week and we look forward
to them showing their strength and ability again today. Congratulations
to the Reserve Football and Senior Netball who also posted good wins.
Be sure to get to the netball court to watch the Senior Netball grand
Final replay, although we are not able to field our strongest team today
due to player commitments it will give other players the opportunity to
really step up to the plate against quality competition. Should be a
great tussle.
We have had a great response to our Sponsorship and Membership
Packages and we welcome all former and new sponsors and members.
There is still opportunity to come on board in Season 2010 catch up
with Nigel or Karen for more details.
Senior Football: Round 2 saw some but not enough improvement from
the week before. Disappointing but the boys have worked hard on the
training track this week and are going out today with confidence to
really take it up to what will be a very strong Lakers unit.
Senior Netball: It was a great win on the weekend against Ballarat. The
team had an explosive start to take a strong lead early and continued to
break away each quarter to win by 30 goals. We played together well as
a team and leads were timed and feeding into the goal ring was much
improved this week. The game also welcomed Emma Farrell to the court
for the first time since she had her baby and she slotted in beautifully to
the team. Best on court went to Kate Schippers, Eleanor Van Dyk and
Catherine Maika.
Club Awards: Will be held at the Red Lion Bar, Bistro & Cafe, Main Road
Ballarat, after today’s game, we hope to see lots of members and
supporters present.
Social Calender:
BALLARAT V REDAN
This promises to be a big game for both clubs. After 2
narrow losses so far this season, Redan will be looking for
their first win of the season. Ballarat on the other hand
went down to East Point last weekend. They will be hoping
to recapture some of the form they displayed against North
City in Round 1 and come away with their second win of
the season. Sophie Caldow, Jordan Bibby and Kelly O’Neill
have been playing some good netball for Ballarat while
Kathryn Murphy and Bianca Woods have been the
standout players for Redan so far this season. Redan by
7g
DARLEY V BACCHUS MARSH
Bacchus Marsh have been playing some fantastic netball
in the first few rounds of the season. Last weekend they
were far too good for North City. They will be hoping to
continue this great start to their season. On the other hand,
Darley had an outstanding victory in round 1 and had the
bye in round 2. This promises to be the match of the round,
as this is the 1 v 2 clash on the ladder. Bronwyn Coffey has
been in outstanding form for Darley and I believe they will
just get over the line on the weekend. The home court
advantage may just be enough. Darley by 1g
MELTON V SUNBURY
Melton have had a great start to the season so far with 2
wins in their first 2 games. Last weekend they were too
good for Sebastopol. Melton’s better players so far this
season have been Joanna Aquilina and Nadine Webber.
Ballarat Football League Record Round 3, 2010.
NETBALL REPORT
DIRECTOR OF NETBALL MICK SIMPKINS
starting this game well to be up 12-1. 2nd qtr Bacchus Marsh
proving to be too strong at this stage leading 26-2. 3rd qtr A
much better quarter by North Ballarat City but down 40-5. 4th
qtr A good win to Bacchus Marsh today, too good, winning 51-8.
Best players Jess Shaw, Courtney Harrison, Rachelle Barnard,
Miram O'Brien. Seniors 1st qtr Bacchus Marsh starting this
game very well up 18-3. 2nd qtr A big quarter by Bacchus Marsh
playing great netball leading 39-5. 3rd qtr A much better quarter
by North Ballarat City but Bacchus Marsh well on top 56-7. 4th
qtr A big win to Bacchus Marsh over North Ballarat City who did
not give in, trying hard all day. Bacchus Marsh winning 72-12.
Bacchus Marsh looking good at this stage of the season, could
be a big threat later on. Best players Mariah Deacon, Rachael
Trickey, Lauren Prout, Sarah Crave. See you next week. Mick
Simpkins
FOOTBALL NETBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER LIAM BRADY
Both will be hoping to continue their good form. This
shapes up to be a very close contest, and it may just mean
that who ever is most accurate in front of goal, comes away
with the points. Melton by 4g
SEBASTOPOL V NORTH CITY
Both sides are winless in season 2010 and both will see
this game as a real opportunity to record their first win of
the season. North City have been beaten quite
convincingly in both outings this season and will be
desperate to be more competitive this week. Sebastopol
have not been too far away this season, with Jordan
Kickett playing some quality netball for Sebastopol.
Sebastopol may be a fraction too strong at home.
Sebastopol by 9g
LAKE WENDOUREE V EAST POINT
Lake Wendouree began their season last week with a hard
fought victory over a very competitive Redan outfit. Sue
Nalder was outstanding in front of goal for Lake
Wendouree along with team mate Stacey McCartin. The
East Point girls will be desperate to beat the formidable
outfit of Lake Wendouree and they will certainly arrive at
the ground ready to play on Saturday. These 2 teams were
spoken about before the season commenced as been the
2 sides to beat this year, so it will be interesting to see who
gains the upper hand early on in the season. Lake
Wendouree may just have too much class. Lake
THE VERDICT BY THE COURIER’S MELANE WHELAN
By Melanie Whelan
THE premiership race could be
wider than most of us thought.
Maybe it's not all about Redan.
Lake Wendouree's sustained
pressure and intensity, in its first
game back, caught the reigning
premier off-guard.
As Redan's six-goal lead whittled
down to a draw, the rest of us
watched
in awe.
The Lions will be sharpening its
claws to redeem itself this week.
Still, there are early premiership
contenders keen to see what they
can
muster.
Sunbury must wait until round nine
to test its form, but now it is
Ballarat's turn to face Redan.
Facing a beaten premier on the
rebound is a formidable
assignment but the Swans are at
least a healthier candidate than
Richmond against a wounded
Geelong at the Cattery this week.
Plus, when the BFL bills this week
as a rivalry round you expect a
thriller to unfold.
Ballarat, sitting atop the ladder, is
earning a reputation as the
competition's big improver and
potential heavyweight.
The Swans opened their season
with a big win against North
Ballarat City before out-running
last season's grand finalist East
Point.
Redan has called on all its players
to lift, no exception, and the Swans
would expect nothing less.
Sunbury and Melton join Ballarat
Ballarat Football League Record Round 3, 2010.
as the only undefeated teams left
in the BFL after two rounds.
Fittingly they are set to collide.
The Bloods appear to have a newfound
self-belief.
The eastern Lions, meanwhile,
picked apart their first two
opponents under lights at Clarke
Oval. Venturing into the daylight
should not phase them. A
rejuvenated Melton at
MacPherson Park might. Or not.
Lake Wendouree's draw with
Redan will have boosted
confidence in the Lakers' camp.
They are still fine-tuning and will
be keen to the test their game
against East Point.
While the Roos are dwelling
uncharacteristically on the ladder
bottom,
the Lakers are unlikely to take
anything for granted.
Rivals east and west will be most
interested in what Darley produces
this
week.
The Devils have had a week's bye
to stew over their lacklustre
season opener. A clash with crosstown
enemy Bacchus Marsh is as
good a motivator as any.
The young Cobras enter the clash
fresh off a win and hungry to
snatch town bragging rights
straight from Darley Park. And
they're higher on the ladder than
the Devils too.
Pressure is on North Ballarat City
for the club's first senior win.
Sebastopol looks to have
genuinely improved so a trip to
Marty Busch Reserve is hardly a
cakewalk for City.
Rivalry round usually lives up to its
name, BFL fans should enjoy
some blockbuster matches -
because there is no foe like an old
foe.

Ballarat Football League Record Round 3, 2010.

The YCW Football Club, was a junior powerhouse club with the BFL in from
the 40’s through to the early 90's winning over 20 premierships.
Many players from YCW went on to play VFL/AFL Football, Des Tuddenham,
Con Britt, Geoff & Daryl Cunningham, James McDonald, Mark Orchard, just
to name a few.
Many other players, after leaving YCW, and taking up senior ranks with other
BFL Clubs also had great success at a local level. The YCW Juniors were
also very well represented in many State teams each year.
In 1994, the YCW Football Club was forced to end its dominance in Junior
Football, and in 1995 we saw the amalgamation of the YCW Junior Football
club, with the Wendouree Football Club to become the Lake Wendouree
Football Netball Club.
To celebrate the great success of the YCW Football Club, and to bring old
friends and acquaintances together, we are excited to invite you to the YCW
Reunion 2010 to be held on Saturday 1st May.
The weekend will start at 2pm Saturday afternoon at the Lakers home game
against East Point. In honour of the YCW Club, our Lakers Senior side will
be wearing commemorative YCW Jumpers, (which will be later auctioned at
our evening function). We will have a Marquee set up for our YCW visitors
and afternoon tea provided.
The evening function will be at The Mining Exchange, Lydiard Street, Ballarat
at 7.30pm. This should be a great night to catch up with past team mates
and club people. We will have memorabilia on display and some old video
footage. Finger food will be provided and everyone who attends will receive a
free Commemorative Booklet.
Please visit the YCW Reunion Website to download your Ticket Registration
Form, or telephone John Olszewski on 0417 521331
The Ballarat Football and Netball League proudly supports the Ballarat White
Ribbon Day campaign. White Ribbon Day is a campaign lead by men to end
violence against women.
White Ribbon Day – Ballarat
White Ribbon Day Campaign
The White Ribbon Day Campaign was established in 1991 by a handful of
Canadian men following the massacre of 14 women in Montreal. Their aim
was to urge men to speak out against violence against women.
The White Ribbon campaign has spread around the world with Australia
becoming a major contributor to the campaign. In 2008 the Commonwealth
Government allocated funding to the White Ribbon Foundation. 2008 also
saw more than 300,000 ribbons distributed across the country.
The Ballarat White Ribbon Day Committee (BWRDC) was established in 2004
to work on the Ballarat White Ribbon Day Campaign. Since then the
committee has been raising the profile of White Ribbon Day by distributing
White Ribbons, inviting men in the community to be White Ribbon
Ambassadors, and advertising in the media and talking at community
functions and schools.
The Ballarat White Ribbon Day Committee welcomes the support of the
Ballarat Football and Netball league and the CEO and White Ribbon Day
Ambassador of Rod Ward.
AFL Respect and
Responsibility Policy
The Ballarat Football and Netball League support the local White Ribbons Day campaign. White
Ribbon Day is a campaign by men to end violence against women.
AFL Respect and Responsibility Policy
The position of the AFL and clubs is that any form of violence towards women is abhorrent and they
recognise that there are significant health impacts of violence perpetrated against women. The AFL
supported moves by organisations to eliminate violence or the potential for violence and as an
organisation with strong emphasis on community responsibility they responded in 2005, with the
release of the Respect and Responsibility. This policy was established in partnership with VicHealth
after allegations of sexual assault were made against AFL footballers in 2004.
The AFL and 16 clubs adopted this policy to address issues of sexual harassment, sexual
discrimination and violence towards women. It represents the AFL’s commitment to addressing
violence against women and to work towards creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment
for women and girls involved in the football community. The Respect and Responsibility policy is
about shifting attitudes, ensuring all involved in the AFL community are aware that violence against
women and behaviour that harms and degrades women is never acceptable.
The AFL is committed to continuing to promoting equal and respectful relationships with women and
see respect, responsibility and participation as the key factors to achieving this.
BFUA Umpires Report
The umpires this week are trying something new and innovative to try and curb the added pressure that comes with being abused either
by supporter or player/official. While the issue of abuse is being dealt with in a very positive way by the clubs and football leagues it is still
an issue that burns within the umpiring ranks.
You might have seen even last week on television an story from WIN TV with the AFL giving their take on Umpiring is everyone’s business
a theme they are trying to get across to all in involved in footy. Even yours truly chipped in with a few comments to show that the issue is
still with us. The successful Green Shirt program with the slogan “Learning umpires wear green so don’t see red” has been used extensively
over the last year to try and eradicate abuse. The BFUA are even going further.
This week we have used a psychiatrist to help the umpires form a routine or strategies that will help them deal with abuse in a more positive
manner. The biggest problem with umpires who are abused during the game is that it takes their focus away from the job they are meant
to be doing. Even for a short time the umpire thinks about a possible mistake while potentially missing further infringements in general play.
While are endeavours are to stop abuse all together we need to also find ways to deal with it now and hopefully professional people will
help us achieve a more positive result.
On the social scene please keep supporting our association and the social director who puts a lot of time into his position to allow all the
members an opportunity to get together and enjoy one another’s company.
Please enjoy your weekend and especially your game.
