UMPIRING IS EVERYONE’S BUSINESS - By Gerard Ryan
Providing enough umpires to meet the match appointments each week is an ongoing challenge for all
umpiring associations and in turn the leagues and clubs which they service.
The role which all that are part of football play in supporting the growth of umpiring is highlighted in the
message linked to this weekend’s round of football ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’.
Improving the match day environment for umpires is one of the elements which is going to assist in
promoting umpiring as a sport that enables those that do not wish to play to stay actively involved in the
game on the ground.
The match day environment includes how umpires are treated by all who are part of the day, including
coaches, players and spectators.
Coaches are the most influential people within a club and have the ability to set the tone that others are
going to follow. This has been recognised this season at AFL level through coaches promoting a
stronger appreciation of the role of the umpires and shaking hands with the umpires before each match.
A number of coaches and players also extend this to shaking hands again at the conclusion of the
match.
This is an action which is being promoted across all leagues and levels of competition by the WorkSafe
VCFL.
Umpires are no different to players and coaches in their approach to the each game. Recognition by
coaches and players that umpires are attempting to perform to the best of their ability highlights that
everyone has an important role in making the game a success.
Clubs generally are encouraged to acknowledge the role which they have in providing a positive
environment off the field amongst spectators.
All club leaders are encouraged to be proactive in promoting codes of conduct and expectations that
supporters of their club respect the efforts of the umpire and the important role that they have in
providing a safe and enjoyable match for players.
It is hoped that some of the actions which are linked to this round of matches will be able to be
continued on as expected actions each week, promoting the role which umpires have at local
community football and that coaches, players and club supporters are all assisting to highlight that
‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’.
CLUB NOTES
Cobra’s Chatter
www.bacchusmarshfc.vcfl.com.au
Cobra Chatter for 15 May 2010
In Netball, the Cobra’s took on the Panthers at Melton South and
another great result for the club with all four teams victorious.
The under 18.5’s took out their match 26-19 and best on court
were Jessie Braudigom, Gaby Mayne and Bethany Pawlowicz.
C Grade continue to play inconsistently which will hopefully soon
be rectified. This is a new grade in the competition and once
everyone settles down the dynamics will improve. The girls ran out
winners 36-26. Well done to Vanessa Mayne, Kate Bowman and
Rachael Baxter who were our best on court.
The Reserves had a very tight match but were able to pull away in
the second half and had a good win 38-29. Best on court were
Jenna Herring, Lauren Prout and Rachelle Barnard.
The Senior’s match was between top of the ladder teams but the
Cobras were able to dominate for the whole match and continue to
play good, consistent netball with a very good win of 73-25, well
done to our Best on Court – Stacey Jeffrey, Amy Reynolds and
Noni McClure.
This week we recognise a magnificent achievement by Lauren
“Lozza” Prout who today plays her 200th Club Game – well done
Lozza – your contribution to Netball at our Club has been very
significant – Congratulations and thank you.
In the Senior’s, the Cobra’s kicked the 1st 4 goals of the Game
which showed that they can mix it but then they were slowly worn
down by the Panthers. We know that this is due to younger bodies
and younger football minds and, up against experienced
campaigners like Scoble, it is a lesson to be learnt. It was yet
again, basic mistakes which kept this Game out of the Cobra’s
reach.
The Reserves really do need to help Coach Noel “Crash”
Craddock by getting to training more often, not only to learn our
Senior Coaches strategies and also a little more about how to play
the Game but also build up fitness and it would follow that you
would then be more competitive.
The Under 18’s had a very good win and, by sticking to football and
Coach Ricky Millar’s urging to always play the ball, finished with
their 1st win for the season by 28 points. It shouldn’t be lost on
anyone that these lads are working hard to make up for their own
age group players who are playing up in the Senior’s. Keep up the
good work lads.
Congratulations to our U18.5’s players who were selected to play
in the BFL Interleague Team which, at the time of writing, is to play
tonight (Wed) at Sunbury against the RDFL – Xavier Kearney,
Coby Millar, Jay Johnson, Declan Phyland, Jesse Dunmore and
Nick Mazzini, who unfortunately Nick couldn’t play due to injury.
Meals in the Rooms after this week’s Game with Caroline’s Cobra
Café kicking off at 6pm.
The Club Notes section should only be used for the promotion of club events and the recognition of club members.
Ballarat Football League Record Round 5, 2010.
Lions Den
www.sfnc.vcfl.com.au
Round 5 sees the Sunbury Lions travel to Maddingley
Park to take on an improving Bacchus Marsh, following
our break in Round 4 due to the bye.
In Round 3 action, the Lions seniors ground out a very
tough victory defeating Melton 13.14.92 to 13.7.85.
The first quarter of the game was dominated by Melton
who kicked away to a five goal lead at quarter time. To
the Lions credit, they gradually worked their way back
into the game, to trail by two gaols at three-quarter
time. The final quarter was a thriller with the Lions
gaining the ascendancy to lead by 20 points mid-way
through the final stanza before a late surge from Melton
that saw the final margin just seven points in a great
game. Best players included Ben Jordan, Brett
Chambers, Jamie Lobb, and Pat Cariss.
The reserves were successful with them winning by 22
points, kicking 12.6.78 to 8.8.56. Best players for the
reserves included Jacob Brewer, Joe Cariss, Matt
Spiteri, and Luke Kelly. The Under 18.5s game was a
one-sided affair, seeing the Lions victorious 15.19.109
to 5.3.33. Best for Sunbury were Steven Fogarty,
Kristian Amott, Reece Wood, and Tim Hill.
On the netball front, the seniors notched up their first
victory for the season defeating Melton 44-38 in a
much-improved display. The reserves lost narrowly 30-
28, C grade were defeated 24-11, and the Under 18.5s
continued on their winning way 25-9.
The Lions would also like to acknowledge two of our
sponsors for the 2010 season. Professional Lighting
has supported the club for a number of years, and are
once again on board for 2010. We also welcome back
Master Dry Cleaners to the Lions for this season.
Please get behind these sponsors and support them
the way they support our club.
On a social note, don’t forget to book your tickets at the
Social Club for a night of great entertainment provided
by “Hell Freezes Over” on 29 May 2010, and our
fantastic Players Revue on Saturday, 26 June 2010.
Go Lions !

Kanga’s Corner
www.eastpointfnc.vcfl.com.au
Kanga’s Corner
We welcome North City FNC to the High Mountain Eastern Oval today for
what promises to be a great day of footy and netball. A good result was
finally on the board last week with 6 of our 7 teams knocking up a win, we
will be looking for a similar result this week.
A special thanks to the following sponsors for their contribution to the Breast
Cancer & Netball Ladies Day held last Saturday: Bunnings, The Upholstery
Gallery, Zu Hairddressing, Rokk 66, Red Lion Bar, Bistro & Cafe, The
Athlete’s Foot, and BECH Community Learning Place. Just on $500 was
raised to support BCNA and our Netballers, thanks to all the ladies who
attended.
Football Round Up: A good result on the weekend saw the seniors finally get
on the board. After a slow first half, things fell into place in the second with an
11 goal third quarter and then finishing with a strong win in the last. Well
done to all players and we look forward to being at home again this week. A
solid win by the reserves last week, it’s good to see them up and going again.
The reserve team is proving to be a solid step in the development of our
younger players and it is great to see them having a real crack for possible
senior selection. Good win by the Under 18.5 boys. Ryan Pompe bagged 6
and was well assisted by Brad Whittaker, James Blood and Joel Van Meel.
Jamie Tung showed plenty of spark as the game went on and Ben Quinlan
found a paddock to run in! Well done boys, keep working together!
Netball Round Up: A big win for the seniors team on the weekend was
welcomed after last weeks loss to the reigning premiers. The girls combined
well as a team and were too strong for Sebastopol with an end score of 110 –
23. The team responded well to the coaches instructions of ensuring the
intensity remained high throughout and the game play was adhered to for the
whole match. “Best On” went to Catherine Maika (67 goals) Jaime Wallace
and Eleanor Van Dyk for their tireless efforts in defence. Reserves had their
first win this weekend, putting four points on the board. The final score East
Point 41 def Sebas 13. What started out a difficult first quarter after a delayed
start, the team pulled together well and managed to keep pushing out the
lead, quarter upon quarter. “Best On” court went to Casey (Jones) Gilbert
who helped out with the reserves this week with a stella performance in
centre and defence. Second “Best On” going to Crystal (Pistol) Ellis in GK,
who managed to get some fantastic intercepts. Third “Best On” went to
Shandelle (Ice) Chillingsworth who played a great game leading off the line in
WA. Unfortunately the C Grade team did not have as good a day but were
definatley more competitive and are due for a win very soon! The Under 18.5
netball team had an excellent win, defeating Sebas 47 – 5 goals. They
demonstrated some excellent passages of play and combined well on all
areas of the court. Awards went to Rhiannon Ezard, Jessamy Bound and
Tara Woods.
Club Awards: Will be held in the Social Rooms after today’s game, we hope
to see lots of members and supporters present.
CLUB NOTES
North’s Notes
www.northcity.com.au
There was a great crowd and atmosphere on
Saturday night for our clash against last year’s
premier Redan. The senior team put in a great effort
for the first three quarters with good pressure around
the contest. We were hoping for a final quarter display
like the previous week against Sebastopol but
unfortunately it was not to be with Redan running
away with the game. Richo was at the top of his game
again leading from the front, Jarrad Denham did the
job for a second week straight and Sam Howard and
Nathan Barnes provided good run off the backline.
The reserves got off to a slow start and ended up
going down by 8 goals. Tom Eltringham kicked
another bag for the magoos finishing with 6, while
Liam Kilgour, Ross Patison and Jamie Lowe put their
head over the footy all day.
The under 18.5s suffered their first defeat of the
season. The boys didn’t seem to be on their game on
the day but are sure to bounce back strongly this
week. Good players on the day were Keenan George,
Nathan Baddeley and Michael McGlashan.
Congratulations to Tom McGregor for making the
interleague side and playing against the RDFL on
Wednesday night.
Unfortunately, the netballers couldn’t get a win on the
board either for the day. The senior netballers lost to a
very good Redan outfit, although the team’s effort
never wavered. Congratulations to Krista Hay for
stepping up and playing in the seniors alongside sister
Sam. The B and C grade teams suffered a similar fait
to the A grade and went down by wide margins. The
girls are improving every week though and a win is
just around the corner. Again, probably the best
performed team on the day was the under 18s who
went down by 20 goals with Molly Soar playing a very
consistent game.
Good luck to all teams again this weekend!!
Our deepest sympathies go out to the Howard family,
who lost Mary Howard, father of Steven, grand mother
of Brendan, Scott and Sam during the week. Mary
has been a much admired member of the North
Ballarat community for many decades. Her warming
CLUB NOTES
Panther’s Notes
www.meltonsouthfnc.vcfl.com.au
Today we welcome Darley Football & Netball Club to home of
the Panthers where the competitive rivalry will continue today.
We also welcome Melton South & Darley parents to the ground
today to watch the u10 kids play at half time of the Seniors. Its
great to see and hopefully one day the kids will play Seniors
one day themselves.
It took 3 games but finally the MSFNC are on the board for
2010. It had been clear that as a club we were all very eager
after 2 losses and then the bye to put our best foot forward to
ensure that the club had a win in all three grades by the
completion of our third game. With hard work and preparation
throughout the bye week that result was achieved in what
could only be described as hard fought in the seniors and very
impressive in the reserves. Unfortunately the under 18 boys
could not get that third win and the club still looks to the day of
all three teams winning together.
This week against the Darley FNC, a club that has had a
winning record over us in recent times. This is a terrific
opportunity to test our last few years of development against a
genuine top 4 side.
On the Netball side all 4 teams lost to a very good Cobra outfit
however the C team were gallant in defeat. I am sure the girls
will be out today to put a another win on the board against the
Devils.
Special thanks to all that supported the ladies day function last
Saturday and for those that kicked on to enjoy the light
entertainment well into the night. It was a great day and night
for the club and the support provided by all players, supporters,
members is very much appreciated.
We also welcome Essbee Constructions (Scott Barber) as a
new sponsor to our club and we would like thank him for his
support.
Special thanks to all our sponsors that have contributed in
supporting our club and also a reminder that we do have our T
Shirts ($55) & Jackets ($65) for sale to supporters and
members so if you are interested please see either Sutts or
Leeroy. By buying these your are the sponsors that bought the
advertising for the club apparel for the next 2 years.
A Reminder at our next home game against Ballarat on the 5th
June we have our annual sponsors, life members and
Southerner day lunch.
We welcome the Darley FNC players, supporters and members
into the Panthers Den for a refreshment prior to heading home.
Devil’s Diary
www.darleyfc.vcfl.com.au
Congratulations on a great week at Darley Park with
the opening of the new netball courts and winning all
seven contests.
After a solid start to the year this week against Melton
South is pivotal in our quest for finals football and
netball so keep up the good work.
Last week was against long time rival Melton with the
Devils coming up against a team that almost ‘knocked
off’ Sunbury so an enthralling contest was anticipated.
The Seniors started off strongly kicking 4 goals in the
1st quarter to Melton’s 1 and domination of the 2nd
quarter saw a 7 goal half time lead, that was until the
3rd when Melton kicked 7 goals at the start of the
quarter to trail by only 1 point. The Devils steadied with
the next 4 goals of the quarter and kicked away in the
last to win comfortably in the end. Best for Darley was
Whelan, McGill, Leonard, Drew Edwards, Herring, T.
Mint.
The Reserves saw a tighter contest however the Devils
lead by 4 goals at the first change and went on to win
by a similar margin. Best were O'Bree, Harbottle,
Mayfosh, Holt, Stephenson & D May.
The Unders contest saw the Devils start much stronger
against an undermanned Bloods team with the 2nd
quarter pivotal in the 27 point win. Best for the Devils
were A. Mayfosh, H. Borg, J. Zeestraten, T. Jansen
NETBALL
All grades had solid victories and well done to all of the
girls. The Under’s had another victory winning by 11,
Best: Brinley Keep. The C Graders notched up their
second win by 10 goals Best: Tarni Lopes. The B
graders remain undefeated with a 16 goal victory Best:
Alix Ferri. A Grade had a less than encouraging 13 goal
victory Best: Talei Bari.
LIONS DEN
www.redanfc.com.au
Today we welcome Melton to Mars City Oval in clash that is
important to both teams at this early stage of the season, so
we should see a good clash today.
Last week against North City we saw all football & netball
teams’ record good wins and stay in the hunt for a place in
the finals. With Interleague on next weekend followed by the
bye all players can give it there all today to achieve a win
and come back from the break fresh.
The Seniors started slowly against a determined North team,
but after an even 1st quarter were able to open up a 4 goal
lead by ½ time, and from there were able to build on that in
the 2nd half to record a good win. We will need to improve
on that today if we are to get over the Melton team who has
shown some good form in the early part of the season.
The Reserves scored a good win last week with a good team
effort and will be out to repeat that again today to remain in
the hunt for a place in the finals.
The U/18.5’s rebounded well from last week’s loss to defeat
the previously undefeated North City team with a good team
effort. The boys will be out to repeat that effort again today.
Congratulations to Harley Smith who plays his 100th game
and to Dom Cartledge who plays his 50th game for the club
today.
Last week saw all 4 Netball score good wins over North City,
and all the players will be out to repeat that effort again today
Tonight we have a Trivia/Auction night being held at the
Western Oval
Also the Annual Ball is coming up on Saturday June 5th. See
any of the committee for further details or to purchase
tickets.
held on Sunday July 18th in The Den commencing at 12
noon. Tickets are $100 each with $10,000 of white goods as
CLUB NOTES
Blood’s Banter
www.meltonfc.vcfl.com.au
Bloods Banter Round 5
They say a week is a long time in politics and football. So it
came to pass at Darley last week where the Devils showed
us how to handle the pink ball in the Breast Cancer
Awareness match at Darley Park. Not all was lost however
as our third quarter burst was a sight to behold, as the
Bloods, led by a best on ground performance by Captain
Saul Grenfell, fought back strongly to overcome the ½ time
deficit. Sadly the momentum could not be sustained and
the gallant Bloods eventually succumbed to the strong
Darley combination. Likewise the Reserves and Under
18.5’s and the Netballers all came away empty handed.
Our numbers in the Under 18.5 and reserves are down a
bit. However we are getting a few extra recruits this week
which should help a great deal in fielding competitive sides.
Spirits were not dampened however as we ably
demonstrated at the Meltonians Special Effort later that
evening back at Maccy Park. Despite not having much to
celebrate on the field, we were gladdened to see a great
turn up at one of our major fundraising events of the year.
Well done to the Meltonians crew once again for a splendid
evening.
This week we are off to City Oval to do battle with the
Redan Lions. Following the game it is back to the Ballarat
Leagues Club for our annual visit. Players, supporters and
officials are welcome to drop in for a drink and nibbles
before heading home.
Katherine Butler has taken up the role of Reserves Team
Manager. This is a big job but one that is in capable hands.
We still need more helpers on match day. Interchange
stewards and timekeeping are all vital jobs that must be
filled or the games can not proceed. Thanks Katherine
With great pleasure we announce the stork has been busy
at the Bloods recently with the recent arrivals of a son for
Adrian and Janelle Bartlett and a little girl for Cam and
Laura McKinley. Congratulations to the proud mums and
dads. We hope to see the youngsters pulling on a bloods
uniform in coming years.
Congratulations to our Under 18 Reps selected in the
interleague squad against RDFL on Wednesday. Good
effort Ryan, Alyx and Jack.Remember the Annual Ball is
coming up fast. Table lists are on the notice board. Contact
Football News
Last week saw us end the day with mixed emotions, as all grades of
footy went down to their East opponents. Wizza was able to add 3 to the
goal tally, along with Kickett Powell 2 and Van Gils Lockyer Cain
Matthews gaining singles, the scorers were across the board. Jenkins
and Young were again named amongst the better players on the day
together with youngsters Lockyer and Van Gils.
Our reserves boys felt the first loss of the season going down to a very
strong east side, Parker B.Noether Wright were amongst the best
players, while Powell 2 Gamble Douglas Townsend 1 put the scores on
the board.
U18s had a hard day on the field against the well grouped east team.
Blake Marsh and Geurts were able to score singles and best player
mentions go out to Parker Furness Young Foster and Colbourne.
Although the points weren’t put on the table all teams are showing
enormous improvement in team structure along with skills and fitness
levels. Keep up the hard work and the benefits will come.
We need all supporters to get behind the teams with some good old
fashioned positive cheering to help them reinforce a new level of
confidence!
Let’s hear plenty of GO BURRA”S coming from the sidelines.
Netball News
On the Netball courts the C grade was again able to put a win on the
board for the Burra girls.
Cecilia Martin had an awesome game in defence backed up by Jess
Widgery. The other grades were not so fortunate but are a young group
finding their feet, stay focused and together and you will progress setting
the foundations for seasons to come.
Laker’s Notes
www.lakers.vcfl.com.au
LAKERS NOTES – ROUND 5
It was another good week at the Lakers last
weekend with all teams winning
except for the senior football.
The under eighteen team has started to realise
their potential and had a courageous
win against a very good Ballarat team. The lead
changed several times during the game but our
boys done very well in the finish to end up with
a great win. Reward for effort over the first few
games.
The reserves were right on track again with
another clinical display. The style of play
was once again very impressive. Keep up the
good work.
The senior boys were competitive for three
quarters but were over run by Ballarat
in the last quarter. We need to show some ticker
and bounce back hard this week.
All good on the netball court once again, with
the girls winning four out of four. With alot of
new faces on the court, the girls all seem to be
gelling well together. Keep up the work girls.
This week, and I would like to start thanking
some of our sponsors for their support. Ballarat
Meat Company, Bridge Hotel, AWM Electrical,
Sectrol Security and Prowse, Perrin & Twomey.
I encourage all supporters to support these
business were possible. We would not survive
without their valuable support.
We are also holding our players auction after
tonights game. All footballers and
netballers are required to be there. We will
have a $5 pizza night so no-one needs to cook.
BACCHUS MARSH V SUNBURY
Bacchus Marsh continued their outstanding form last
week with another big win, this time over Melton
South.
Katie Williams and Noni McClure have both been in
outstanding form for Bacchus Marsh so far this season
and are both equal leaders in the Competitions Senior
Best and Fairest Award to date.
Sunbury have recorded 1 win so far this season and
after having the bye last week, they will be hoping to
put in a competitive performace against the
competitions ladder leaders this week.
Once again, Bacchus Marsh will be too strong
Bacchus Marsh by 17g
EAST POINT V NORTH CITY
East Point will come into this game with plenty of
confidence after an outstanding victory last week
against Sebastopol. East Point are sitting nicely in 3rd
position on the ladder and will be looking to
consolidate that position with a good win over North
Ballarat City this week.
Jamie Wallace and Catherine Maika have been in very
good form for East Point and North City may struggle
to contain these quality players.
East Point by 29g
MELTON SOUTH V DARLEY
This is shaping up to be a very even contest. Both
teams are locked on 12 points, with only percentage
seperating them. Melton South will be hoping to
bounce back after a disappointing loss to ladder leader
Bacchus Marsh last week, while Darley had a good
win over Melton at home last week.
The winner of this game may just be the team that is
most accurate in front of goal.
Melton Sout by 5g
REDAN V MELTON
Redan were simply too good for North Ballarat City last
week where they not only gained 4 points, but plenty
of percentage as well. Redan will see this game as
another game they should win.
Melton on the other hand are 1 win from their first 4
games and this game is a must win if they are to play
finals netball this year.
If Redan are to come away with a victory they will
cement their position inside the top 6 and with a very
healthy percentage, place themselves in a good
position to challenge the competitions best later on in
the season.
SEBASTOPOL V LAKE WENDOUREE
It was no surprise that Lakers continued their
outstanding form last week with a solid win over
Ballarat. Emma Burton and Stacey McCartin have both
once again been in outstanding form and a class
above their opposition.
Sebastopol suffered a big loss last week and they will
again struggle to be competitive against the class of
THE VERDICT BY THE COURIER’S MELANiE WHELAN
By Melanie Whelan
VICTORY can do wonders for confidence
on the football field - so too can a bit of
belief.
A metropolitan radio station launched a
campaign this week encouraging people
of all football backgrounds to tip
Richmond this week against Hawthorn.
The station wants 10,000 names on a
petition in a bid to let the Tigers know
there were people who had faith in them,
and not just the true Richmond diehards.
It's a little like a Save the Whales
campaign, only for football
humanitarians.
Luckily, The Courier does not have to
work a similar plea into its BFL coverage.
East Point and Melton South have finally
and emphatically stamped their name on
the winners' list.
The Kangaroos sounded a stark reminder
to the competition of just how potent they
can be with 11 unanswered goals to
break free of a deadlock with Sebastopol.
Dan Jordan piled on eight goals to
restake his claim as competition leading
goal kicker.
North Ballarat City, despite already
having one win on the board, must brace
itself for a probable tough onslaught.
Melton South's win, while not pretty, was
still a win and an important confidence
boost to host Darley this
afternoon.Improved consistency for both
will be pivotal.
Four rounds in, the BFL has promoted a
sense of even-ness that has competition
tipsters routinely pulling their hair out.
Melton, Sebastopol and Bacchus Marsh
Ballarat Football League Record Round 5, 2010.
kept low profiles on the recruiting front
raised few expectations from rivals early
but have rattled more fancied opponents.
Each has focussed on home-grown talent
and self-improvement.The Bloods nailed
their first two wins, shocked ladder leader
Sunbury and last week nearly pulled-off a
stellar comeback against Darley.
Sitting seven goals down at half-time,
with only one major on the board,
the Bloods fired seven unanswered goals
to open the third term and claw back
within a point.
While Darley gradually pulled away, it
remained wary.
Devils' coach Gary Learmonth told The
Courier that Melton should continue to
surprise teams this season.
This afternoon is the Bloods' first road-trip
to Ballarat to face one of the slickest and
well-drilled team units, Redan.
Should they stick to their bold, running
style, the Bloods should serve up an
interesting contest.
Sebastopol has looked strong against
Melton, City and East Point, only to have
stumbled with late fade-outs.
The Burras have a chance to create
headaches for Lake Wendouree but there
is little room for error.
The Lakers are vying to bounce back
from a loss to fellow strong flag contender
Ballarat.
Bacchus Marsh proved persistent against
Melton South last week but, like the
Burras, will have to step their tenacity up
a notch against undefeated ladder leader
Sunbury.
The Cobras were overwhelmed against
Darley a week earlier and will be keen to
challenge Sunbury.
The eastern Lions are unlikely to be
caught out after a week's bye.
At least, four rounds in, no BFL club is
languishing like Richmond.

SPECIAL FEATURE - Part 2: Favourite Sons of ballarat
by Ken Piesse
My top 10 all-time favourite Ballarat boys are as follows, in alphabetical order:
Percy Beames:
The only man to captain Victoria at both cricket and football, a three-time premiership rover at Melbourne, Percy was the chief cricket and
football writer at The Age when I started at Spencer St. in the ‘70s and very competitive both in his writing and also on the golf course. He
claimed a long drive competition one Age golf day after my ball rolled just 2-3 inches off the cut portion of the fairway. And I’d out-driven
him by 50 yards!
John Birt:
Played in four ‘Big Smoke’ Grand Finals with Essendon, but says two matches back in Ballarat are as equalled treasured, especially the
time, in 1954, tiny Ballarat College defeated powerful, star-studded St Pat’s, denying them of a 50th consecutive Ballarat schools
premiership. “And we didn’t beat them just once that year,” said Birt, “we beat ‘em twice.”
Barry Cheatley:
No-one, not even Max Walker, would talk under-water with a mouth full of marbles quite like “Cheatah”. Legends such as Malcolm Blight,
Ron Barassi and Allen Aylett remain among his best mates in an outstanding 50 years in footy. He was named full-back in Redan’s Team of
the Century.
Bob Davis:
Star of the 1951-52 Geelong teams, Bobby went from Clunes to Golden Point and onto Geelong where his blinding speed won him the
nickname of “The Geelong Flyer”. Still known for his post-football tv appearances alongside Lou Richards and Jack Dyer on Channel
Seven’s iconic League Teams, a Thursday night “must-see” – only occasionally would they bother to read out a team – “Woofa” is still
much-loved and in demand. I’d take my Frankston Peninsula third XI cricketers down to Geelong for an annual Saturday-Sunday game of
Premier League and we’d always stay at Bob’s motel. He’d shuffle into the foyer in his slippers and introduce himself to each and every
one of my players. It was priceless.
Danny Frawley:
From Bungaree to Brighton, from farming spuds to appearing on Fox Sports, it has been quite a transformation for “Dapper Dan”, one of
the great modern-day full-backs, with only one failing. He couldn’t -- and still can’t -- kick with his left foot! Played with East Ballarat before
beginning his 200-game career which included All-Australian selection in 1988.
Jim Gull:
The much-travelled Daylesford legend topped the Ballarat League goalkicking for seven years in a row from 1958-64 and in 1961 amassed
a career-best 159 goals for the season. He’d played League football with South Melbourne (as did his son Stewart). Together they played a
game for North Ballarat in ’71, Jim making the game notable by booting a goal with a place kick! He still holds the VFL record of 21 goals
in a game. In all he played for 31 years and clocked up 550–plus games! His daughter, Robyn Maher, captained the Australian Opals,
winning a bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympics. All-up, she played 375 internationals.
Tony Lockett:
Started at North Ballarat, aged seven, in the Under 12s and had played 100 competitive games including four Grand Finals before he’d
turned 16! He kicked a goal with his first kick in BFL competition and was an instant star at St Kilda where he was to win a Brownlow, a
rare feat for a full-forward, and later in Sydney where he advanced his career goals tally to a record 1360 at almost five a game and at a
conversion rate of 70 per cent! One of the game’s true greats, now living in the southern highlands, Don Bradman country, outside Sydney.
Mick Malthouse:
He may be surly to the journalists and tell an occasional fib, but there’s no doubt his contribution to the game as player and coach. Season
2010 is his 27th consecutive coaching year, his stints including two premierships at West Coast and two losing Grand Finals at
Collingwood, where he has coached since 2000. He’d first played at North Ballarat in the ones as a 16-year-old and played in Richmond’s
last flag in 1980.
Mick McGuane:
Originally from Sebastapol, St Kilda’s territory, McGuane was left off a junior development list by the Saints before being immediately
signed by Collingwood where he was to become a frontline member of the famous 1990 premiership team. Who could ever forget his eight
or nine bounce run at the MCG earlier that year! Has been a loyal and laconic radio colleague, too, of mine for years at Sport 927.
John Northey:
One of Ballarat’s proudest sons, “Swooper” was a star at Richmond, having originally come from Derrinallum in the Western Districts.
Redan won three flags in a row under him from 1975-77s. A senior League coach at four clubs with time to talk, he returned to Ballarat as
senior coach of the Swans in 2005. In one game last year he had laryngitis and had to let his assistant do all the spruiking, but Swooper
still coached and the Swans still won!
becoming a major contributor to the campaign. In 2008 the Commonwealth
Government allocated funding to the White Ribbon Foundation. 2008 also
saw more than 300,000 ribbons distributed across the country.
The Ballarat White Ribbon Day Committee (BWRDC) was established in 2004
to work on the Ballarat White Ribbon Day Campaign. Since then the
committee has been raising the profile of White Ribbon Day by distributing
White Ribbons, inviting men in the community to be White Ribbon
Ambassadors, and advertising in the media and talking at community
functions and schools.
The Ballarat White Ribbon Day Committee welcomes the support of the
Ballarat Football and Netball league and the CEO and White Ribbon Day
Ambassador of Rod Ward.
AFL Respect and
Responsibility Policy
The Ballarat Football and Netball League support the local White Ribbons Day campaign. White
Ribbon Day is a campaign by men to end violence against women.
AFL Respect and Responsibility Policy
The position of the AFL and clubs is that any form of violence towards women is abhorrent and they
recognise that there are significant health impacts of violence perpetrated against women. The AFL
supported moves by organisations to eliminate violence or the potential for violence and as an
organisation with strong emphasis on community responsibility they responded in 2005, with the
release of the Respect and Responsibility. This policy was established in partnership with VicHealth
after allegations of sexual assault were made against AFL footballers in 2004.
The AFL and 16 clubs adopted this policy to address issues of sexual harassment, sexual
discrimination and violence towards women. It represents the AFL’s commitment to addressing
violence against women and to work towards creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment
for women and girls involved in the football community. The Respect and Responsibility policy is
about shifting attitudes, ensuring all involved in the AFL community are aware that violence against
women and behaviour that harms and degrades women is never acceptable.
The AFL is committed to continuing to promoting equal and respectful relationships with women
and see respect, responsibility and participation as the key factors to achieving this.
BFUA Umpires Report
In this weeks edition of the umpire’s page I would like to draw to your attention the new umpiring initiative
launched by the AFL via the VCFL “umpiring is everyone business”. Providing enough umpires to meet match
appointments each week is an ongoing challenge for all umpiring associations and in turn the leagues and
clubs which they service.
The role which all that are part of football play in supporting the growth of umpiring is highlighted in the
message linked to this weekend’s round of football “Umpiring is everyone’s business”
Improving the match day environment for umpires is one of the elements which is going to assist in promoting
umpiring as a sport that enables those that do not wish to play to stay actively involved in the game on the
ground. The match day environment includes how umpires are treated by all who are part of the day, including
coaches, players and spectators.
Coaches are the most influential people within a club and have the ability to set the tone that others are going
to follow. Recognition by coaches and players that just like them during the course of the game the umpires are
attempting to perform to their best of their ability highlights to all that everyone has an important role in making
the game a success.
In Ballarat we are very fortunate that all leagues and clubs and club personnel have over the course of the last
few years done a magnificent job in supporting the umpires and making them feel part of the game. Everyone
does their part in promoting the umpires and the growth the association has seen in the last couple of years will
only go towards helping fill the void of umpires that we have experienced in the past. We must congratulate you
all from the leagues down to the players and hopefully this will continue to grow and we can acknowledge we
are all part of the greatest game of all.
To all the umpires have a great weekend and keep supporting your association.
