Outstanding Interleague results !
The Ballarat FNL representative side
competed in the WorkSafe VCFL
Championships last week at the Eastern Oval, and all who took part
represented the BFL and their Clubs with pride. Every individual should be
proud of their efforts, and there is no doubt that the outstanding win in the
Senior football raised eyebrows all around the VCFL, and further enhanced
the high standing and respect all opposition leagues have for the Ballarat FNL.
The superb win by the Senior football side will see the Ballarat FNL play for
the VCFL Division 1 title at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton in 2011 against the
Goulburn Valley FL, which is a title the BFL has not held since 1986. Special
mention & thanks to and there is no doubt that the preparation put in by the
Coaching & support team over the 4 week campaign was the most
professional and thorough in the leagues history and the results reflected that
– Thanks guys.
The U18’s went down against a very impressive Geelong FL side, but the
pleasing thing to note was that boys matched the GFL side in all aspects of
the game apart from the costly 2nd quarter lapse – and in fact finished the
game full of running to nearly pinch a win ! The BFL should be proud of the
effort put forward by the boys, who conducted themselves in an exemplary
manner. These young footballers are the future of the league, and rest
assured, from what they showed on the weekend that the future of the league
is in good hands. Well done to Coach Chris Gleeson and all who assisted his
team.
The Netball girls finished “1 all” after a super effort by the Under 18’s saw them
dominate the Geelong FNL Under 18 side, and the Senior girls fought out a
very high class game against an impressive GFL side feature many State
league and national player. The effort put forward by Coach’s Jess MacGowan
and Under 18 Coach Maria Kavanagh & the girls was fantastic, and they were
also great ambassadors for the league.
Thanks also to Doug Cue and Andrew Esh and their tireless team of Trainers
who volunteered their time to help the squad, and everyone else associated
with the group (Timekeepers, Team Managers, etc) for their efforts on the
weekend and in the lead up to the WorkSafe Championships.
The BFL approached the 2006 campaign with a steely determination to
redeem ourselves after the poor result in 2008 and there is no doubt we
achieved that. The BFL selected a group that was “hell bent” on gaining the
respect of their opponents and the VCFL, and we thank everyone of them for
their efforts as they most certainly did that. I suspect that all who were a part
of the 2010 campaign already have 1 eye on going 1 step further in 2011.
Ballarat Football League Record Round 6, 2010.
As you read this the best of the Ballarat FL’s young talent will be in Bendigo
competing for the BEST Employment Goldfields Cup against the Bendigo
Junior FL. For those thinking of making the trip the games will be played at
the Harry Trott Oval in Bendigo.
This is the 25th year of the BEST Employment Goldfields Cup, with the
scoreboard currently reading Ballarat 14 V Bendigo 10. Amazingly, the Ballarat
side has won 8 of the last 9 Trophies, and such an effort says as much about
Bendigo’s early dominance as it does about the progress of the Ballarat FL
Junior competition and our recent dominance.
The Goldfields Trophy is sponsored by BEST Employment and we thank them
for their support, along with our new Junior Interleague sponsors McDonalds,
and the VCFL Junior Interleague supporting sponsors VLine.
Thanks to all involved for their efforts in bringing this together over the past
few weeks, including Coach’s Wayne cracknel, Glen Gundry, Greg Stewart,
Chris Taylor and Brett Patrikeos. Well done to BFL Operations Manager Aaron
Nunn and Liam Brady for their efforts, and to our Junior Football Directors
John Seeary and Jason White who have worked tirelessly to put on today’s
event. Most of all, well done to the boys selected and good luck today !
The BFL Junior Interleague also competes against the Geelong Junior FL in
the Annual “Bob Davis Trophy” at the Eastern Oval on Saturday 3rd July. We
are proud of the focus we place on junior representative football, and the
opportunities that it creates for our junior footballers and we look forward to
seeing some of the kids involved today and on July 3rd as they continue their
development to the highest level.
All who attend such days find them one of the most enjoyable days of the
football calendar each year, and seeing the pride that these young players
take in representing their league, and the efforts they put in, really emphasizes
that the future of football in the Ballarat FL is healthy. Go boys !
Good luck to all, and enjoy your day at the Ballarat FNL !
ALL WELCOME IN OUR GAME - By VCFL CEO:
Glen Scott
I think it is fair to say the whole community, let alone the football community, is aware of the Jason Akermanis article last
week in the Herald Sun.
Jason, who is well known for his views on a range of matters in life, expressed the view that any players that are
homosexual should not come out. Akermanis stated that, “If a player wants to come out then good luck. But I believe
the world of AFL footy is not ready for it. To come out is unnecessary for a lot of reasons”.
One could interpret Akermanis’ view as meaning all Australian Rules players at any level. Throughout country
football/netball land the WorkSafe VCFL strongly support any view against homophobia where our football/netball clubs
are about a fair go to all and that everyone is welcome and supported in our game.
Football/netball clubs are a “broad church” where people of both genders, all ages, all races and religions, all colours
and all sexual orientations are welcome. The only thing we always uphold is that everyone involved with our football and
netball (on and off the field) conducts themselves at all times within the rules, policies and infrastructures that provide
the foundation for the equal enjoyment and inclusion of all.
There are many pressures in life today and to be “non inclusive” in our sport and related communities needlessly adds
further pressure and can lead to increased levels of isolation, depression and suicide that are indeed real challenges
throughout society.
Everywhere we turn in our environment we must be welcoming to everyone and ensure they are in a place that
supports them
rather than alienates them.
Football and netball throughout the WorkSafe VCFL – the broadest church of all!
Enjoy your football and netball this weekend irrespective of who you play on or who you stand next to in the crowd.
Regards,
Glenn Scott
CLUB NOTES
Cobra’s Devil’s Chatter Diary
www.bacchusmarshfc.vcfl.com.au
www.darleyfc.vcfl.com.au
After the Interleague break the Devils are at home to
East Point in another game crucial to our finals
chances.
The previous round saw the Devils take on the Melton
South Panthers and come away with six victories, only
losing the U18 football.
The Seniors was one of the more exciting games
witnessed for years with the Devils down by a goal with
40 seconds to go and getting up by a point in the dying
seconds. A great finish but leads of over 5 goals during
the game should not have allowed a close result. Best
for Darley were Cape, Drew Edwards, McGill, Whelan,
Dwayne Edwards & Newton
The Reserves saw another string 4 quarter victory
leading from start to finish. Best were Curly Austin,
Harbottle, Harrington, Matthews, Mayfosh & The
evergreen Trav Stephenson
The Unders contest saw a tight contest with the Devils
holding a slender 8 point lead at the 3 quarter time
orange break only to go down by 2 points after some
inaccurate kicking in the final term. Best were Ash
Mayfosh, Borg, Zeestraten, Konieczny & Bugg.
NETBALL
Well done again to all grades, bringing home the
chocolates for the 4 grades. The Under’s had another
solid victory winning by 14, Best: Demi Geary. The
‘young’ C Graders put in another solid 4 quarters
winning by 4 goals Best: Briana Bendelle. The B grades
remain undefeated with a 3 goal victory Best: Casey
Oliver. A Grade had a strong 13 goal victory Best:
Jasmin Lebner.
Kanga’s Corner
www.eastpointfnc.vcfl.com.au
Kanga’s Corner
Round 6 brings a road trip to play against Darley. It will be a tough day
as all three Darley football sides are in good form and we will need to
be at the top of our game to again this week register three wins. It will
be similar at the netball court and we expect a ripper of an Under 18.5’s
game with the two teams separated by percentage.
Football Round Up: A good four quarter performance on the weekend
saw the seniors record its second win. Although being inaccurate in
front of goals our forwards were presented with many opportunities.
Sammy Toulmin, Dan Jordan (5 goals) and Matthew Wapling were all
again in the better players. Congratulations goes out to Ned Gilbert for
being selected in the Vic Country U19.5 for the second year running
and well done to all players who represented the league at inter-league
level last weekend. The U18.5s got off to a good start and were solid
for the first 3 quarters against North City and were in front by 36 points
at 3/4 time. The last quarter was very ordinary as the players got lazy
and complacent and let North City back into the game by letting them
have 6 shots on goal to our 3. We have to learn to play out the full 4
quarters. Award winners - Dion Gilbert, Ryan Pompe, Joel Van Meel.
Senior Netball Round Up: The senior team had another big win on the
weekend against North City. Even though the score board showed a
significant difference between the two competing teams, this wasn’t a
true indicator of the game. North City defended well and never gave up
the whole match. We had to work hard for our goals and that was done
by every person on the court. The defence again stood up to the
challenge and provided a united front to provide constant pressure on
the North City goalers. With key goal defence Kate Schippers
unavailable due to a back injury Jaime Wallace combined well with
Eleanor Van Dyk and Casey Gilbert to provide the team with key
intercepts for the goalers to consolidate. A fantastic game by all. Best
on: Jaime Wallace, Catherine Maika and Casey Gilbert. Players Cup:
Casey Gilbert
Congratulations to the C Grade netball team who had their first win last
round, well done girls! And congratulations to Jess Macgowan as
coach of the BFL Interleague Team, it was a great effort against a very
strong opponent. Well done to Catherine Maika, Kate Schippers and
Meg Gilbert who all made the interleague teams.
Club Awards: Will be held at The Red Lion Bar, Bistro & Cafe, Main
Road Ballarat after today’s game, we hope to see lots of members and
supporters present.
Social Calender:
Last Man Standing – Sunday July 4th 2010 at the Social Rooms from
12pm onwards. Tickets are $50 each and are available from the club.
EPFNC Ball 2010 – Saturday 31st July 2010 – more details to follow
Thursday Night Teas: Help create a great atmosphere of support
around the club by coming along with family and friends for a meal.
We welcome all members, supporters, players, family and friends to a
great night of good food and good company. Doors open at 6pm.
Come along for the team announcements and meet other members
and supporters.
Finally, good luck to all football and netball teams today.
Blood’s Banter
Bloods Banter Round 6
This week we are playing hosts to Bacchus Marsh at
Maccy Park. This will be a crucial game for all grades and
not one to be taken lightly. It was a tough day at Redan last
round. Jon Prudek battled hard all day to earn the Golden
Fleece Best on Ground award. Keirin Atkins kept his eye
on the ball and the resulting slow motion video proved very
entertaining during the week. This is sure to feature highly
in the end of season highlights. Despite some bus
problems after the game, the boys enjoyed a drink or two
at the Ballarat Leagues Club on the way home. Thank you
to the staff at the Leagues Club for their hospitality.
I am pleased to announce Katerine Butler has taken up the
position of Reserves team manager. I am less pleased to
report the lack of support from some of our “supporter”
base. Games don’t just happen by themselves. We need
timekeepers, interchange stewards and someone to run
water. If you want to see your sons play football for Melton,
give Katerine a hand. Same goes for the other grades too.
Every little bit helps.
The Meltonians have to postpone the “Dogs” night due to
lack of numbers. Hopefully this enjoyable night at the
Meadows will be rescheduled for later in the season.
Boags is now the major beer sponsor of the Melton
Football Club and generous introductory offers including
discount cards and caps are available. All Boags products
purchased by members attract a rebate to the club so bring
in your dockets and drop them in the box behind the bar.
The more we support our sponsors, the more they can
support us.
The Annual Ball is coming up really fast. June 4’th is the
big night at the Luxor. Table lists are on the notice board
and money is required to be paid this week. The more the
merrier, remember the Black & White theme. Buses will be
available but spaces are limited first in best dressed.
CLUB NOTES
North’s Notes
www.northcity.com.au
After a weekend off all teams are refreshed and ready
to go against Melton South at home this Saturday.
Congratulations to Jason McNamara and Daniel
Ross-Smith for representing the BFL in a great win
over the GFL. Both players kicked a goal and chipped
in on the day. Also congratulations to Xavier Quigley
and Tom McGregor for playing in the under 18
interleague.
Last round’s match up against East Point proved to be
disappointing, with all the teams getting close in the
football but not close enough to get over the line. The
senior boys were always there about but could never
get close enough to have a genuine chance of
winning, going down by 25 points. Adam Richardson,
Jason McNamara and Jarryd Graham were the best
players on the day. The reserves played probably their
best game for the year, but in the end the injury toll
and no bench at the end of the game hurt the boys,
going down by 34 points. Simon Ward, Jack Eckel,
Ross Patison and Daniel Neri were the best players.
Unfortunately AJ Beer hurt his shoulder in his first
game for the club, everyone at the club wishes him a
speedy recovery! The under 18.5s lost their third
game in a row, leaving their run until to late against a
strong East Point side. Michael McGlashan, Keenan
George and Nathan Rigas were the best players.
The netballers also came away from the day empty
handed. The senior girls put in a good effort against
one of the premiership fancies in East Point. Katelyn
Rodgers and Karina Reynard certainly held there own
against some tough opposition. The reserves were in
a similar boat to the seniors, getting off to a slow start
and never being able to get any momentum going,
better players were Kristy Thompson and Zoe Tink.
The C grade girls put in a better performance this
week and showed positive signs throughout the
game. Best players were Kim Cresswell and Mollie
Nijam. The Under 18.5 girls again worried their
opposition but couldn’t quiet get close enough for the
win, going down by 16. The best players for the
unders were Mollie Soar and Amy Pattinson.
Good luck to all teams this weekend!!!
Panther’s Notes
www.meltonsouthfnc.vcfl.com.au
The Club would like to congratulate the boys that participated
in the BFL interleague side last weekend in the win over
Geelong...well done
First trip up the highway this weekend and I know the club is
certainly looking forward to it. Two weeks of soul searching
after another agonising defeat and the jaws of victory will
hopefully have all players ready to take on North City today in
what shapes as a pivotal clash for our club.
The unders for the first time this year played as a TEAM, and
showed that players are irrelevant if they are not contributing to
the team goals. The boys that took the field should be proud of
their efforts and the spirit in which they played the game. Well
done fellas we look forward to another great contest today.
Congratulations to Boofa Hibbert and Tom Stoneham on
selection in the BFL interleague under 18 team, terrific boys.
With a few out of the senior squad the reserves were a little
undermanned and were beaten by a very good pacey Darley
reserves team. Once again though the boys gave a very good
account of themselves and great to see guys like Galea and
Scott continuing to push hard for senior selection with both
having very good starts to the year. What can we say about the
senior game, the effort is their, the intensity is there however
some mental blocks seem to be costing the team victory. The
coaching staff and players are pulling their hair out to explain
the two close losses this year when leading with 1 minute to go
in both games, but one commitment they give the club is they
will not stop working hard on the training track, the reward will
come guys, you just have to stick together and keep doing the
basics well.
The girls went down in all grades against a determined Darley
outfit however they will be out to redeem themselves against
North City today. Good luck girls and we hope you build on a
positive start to the season by winning today.
Lets ensure we all grab a beverage before travelling home this
evening from the North City social rooms. Also make sure your
well aware of upcoming functions as we have some very big
functions on the calendar over the next two months.
Invitations have gone out to Life members, Sponsors and
Southerners for our luncheon at out home game against
Ballarat on June 5th. Should be great day

Lions Den
www.sfnc.vcfl.com.au
Round 6 sees the Sunbury Lions take on their recent
nemesis Lake Wendouree at Clarke Oval in the Lion’s
toughest test so far in season 2010. Even though the
Lions sit atop the senior ladder, any improvement is
very hard to gauge until they start to compete with the
more successful BFL teams of recent years.
In Round 5 action, the Lions seniors ground out a very
even performance in defeating a youthful and
inexperienced Bacchus Marsh side 21.18.144 to 1.4.10.
The first half of the game was dominated by Sunbury
who held a commanding lead at half-time. But to the
Marsh’s credit, the second half was a much more even
affair, even though the scoreboard may have indicated
otherwise. in a very team-oriented performance, best
players included Ben Jordan, Jessie Smith, James
Fedoruk, Matt Medcraft, Greg Hay, Brett Chambers,
and Ben Anderson.
The reserves also chalked up another victory with them
winning by 81 points, kicking 17.11.113 to 4.8.32. Best
players for the reserves included Ryan Hurst, Matt
Botton, Ben Sleight, Jackson Cheep, and Wayne
Meacham. The Under 18.5s also continued on their
winning way although there is clearly plenty of
improvement still in this side. The Lions scored
13.10.88 to Bacchus Marsh 4.7.31. Best for Sunbury
were Jarryd Potter, Anthony Sammut, Steven Fogarty,
Dwain Sanderson, and Brendan Kilty.
On the netball front, despite the best efforts of the girls,
the seniors were defeated by the Marsh 83-21. The
reserves lost 47-15, C grade were defeated 58-12, and
the Under 18.5s continued on their winning way 31-9.
The Lions would also like to acknowledge two of our
sponsors for the 2010 season. Go Electrical are our
Coaches’ Box sponsor for 2010, and TKG Controls are
one of our Coaches’ sponsors for this season. Please
get behind these sponsors and support them the way
they support our club.
On a social note, don’t forget to book your tickets at the
by “Hell Freezes Over” on 29 May 2010, and our
CLUB NOTES
Laker’s Notes
www.lakers.vcfl.com.au
It was nice to have a week off but back into the fray
again we go. Congratulations to all our interleague
players who represented both the Club and the
League on the weekend. Matthew Battistello, Ben
Taylor, Dan Weymouth, Sue Nalder (Captain & best
on for Ballarat), Casey Frame, Emma Burton, Maddie
Davis, Stacey McCartin, Harry Lahy, Justin Gordon,
Josh Plozza & James Cook, Gina McCartin (Captain
and best on court), Molly Boyle, and Maddi Wallis .
As you can see we are a wonderful representation on
the weekend – well done to all.
The under eighteens have a big challenge today
against what seems to be a good under eighteen side
in Sunbury. Our boys have probably had the hardest
draw playing all the top sides early in the season.
However we have acquitted ourselves extremely well.
This should be a great contest and we need to work
hard on this big oval. Good luck boys.
The reserves also have a big challenge today. They
have been playing the best brand of ressies football
possibly ever seen at the club. It is also great to see
the boys endeavouring to get up into the seniors and
putting on pressure within the senior group to hold
their spot. This is another big game as the Sunbury
reserves have always been very strong.
Our seniors boys come off a hard fought win against a
much improved Sebas. With a few players out injured
it was great to see the inclusions coming up from the
reserves and have an impact on the game. Today will
be another test as it is the hardest road trip in the
BFL. In saying that our record at Sunbury over the
past couple of seasons has been good. It will take a
lot of hard work again and to be at our best to get
over the line.
On our way home from Sunbury tonight, we will all be
heading to the Bridge Hotel for our awards and
incentives. As we all know, the Bridge are a fantastic
support to the club, and it will be nice to call in as a
club tonight for a few drinks on our way home.
Sunday is also Ladies day at JDs Sports bar, another
great sponsor, especially of the Netball girls. 2pm with
a bit of pampering with “Body Works” followed by a
few drinks.
Don’t forget our Annual Ball is next week – Saturday
5th June – see Julie or Denise for tickets for what will
be a big night for the Club.
Have a great day
Gavin
SWANS CHATTER
Today the Dahlsens Swans play hosts to the Sebastopol
FNC in what will be an entertaining day of football and
netball. It has been two weeks since our last game and
every one is keen to get back in to it.
Football: The seniors recorded a satisfying win against the
Lakers. In what was considered a danger game for the
Dahlsens Swans over at the Wendouree Reserve the
players put in a team effort performance in coming away
with the game in the final quarter and take the four points.
The reserves and U/18.5 could not put back to back wins
together with both sides been beaten on the day. The
boys will be looking to get back on the winning way today.
Netball: No joy amongst the netballers with all sides going
down to the Lakers. The girls will be looking to set the
ledger right today against the ‘Burra’.
Congratulations to Jordyn Bibby on her selection to the
U/18.5 Netball Interleague Squad.
Around the Club: Congratulations to Ashley Ilsley and Ben
Clay for their selection in the BFL U/18 Interleague side
who defeated the Riddell District FL, and congratulations
to Jordyn Bibby who is the Dahlsens Swans only selection
to the Netball Interleague Squad to play the Geelong FL.
It appears ‘Walshy’ our Head Trainer made a friend during
last weeks Auskick. Walshy attended to an injured little
tacker and was rewarded with a box of chocolates the
following week. So to all players, after treatment you now
know how to reward the trainers, especially the Head
Trainer.
The Dahlsens Swans welcome Sponsors and special
guests to the Corporate Boxes. Please enjoy the Clubs
hospitality and a successful day of football and netball.
Every Saturday after the game enjoy a delicious meal
prepared by Kate the Club’s resident Chef.
Congratulations to all the BFL Interleague players who
managed to beat their Geelong opponents, great news
for the league as a whole, Well done to all.
This week The Globe Hotel Kookaburras, visit Ballarat
and wish all players best of luck for today’s games, you
should be feeling refreshed from a week off!
Football News
Last game saw our senior boys take Lake Wendouree
right to the edge only to lose the game in the last
quarter. Great effort from all players with our usuals
rating mentions. The reserves side were shown that a
little more hard work is needed to maintain the winning
streak they previously had, but don’t let this discourage
you, the improvements are aplenty. Jakes 18s were
also over run by the opposition Lakers side last game,
some talented young players who will develop
throughout the season.
Be sure to congratulate Harley Hunter and Kyle Eyres
on making and participating in the BFL U18s
Interleague squad and we hope this experience has
been beneficial to you both.
Other congratulations must go out to Daniel Parker
who last week notched up his 50th senior/reserve
game with Sebastopol FNC. Thanks for sticking with
Burra!!
Netball News
Last week’s games showed some bright spots, C
Grade and U/18 played well and all the teams are
staring to bond, which will only lead to further
improvement. There are so many young girls with such
a long career ahead of them at Sebas, stick with it
girls!
Social News
Tonight club players, parents and supporters are invited
to meet back at the Atlantic Hotel for social drinks and
gathering.
Last man standing tickets are out, could everyone
please get behind this function as it is a major
fundraiser for the club. If you didn’t receive your tickets
please see Cassie, Sandi or Peter ASAP. Looks to be a
great day for all so be sure to have the 13th June free
for this event.
Scotty is heading up a social committee so if your able
to help he would love to talk to you.
Canteen rosters are being sent out over the next few
weeks and we ask that you all make an effort to assist,
it’s only a hour and if its left to only a few they get run
off their feet, and don’t want to help again, so please
help!
As always we encourage you to support our sponsors
Globe Hotel, Eureka Concrete, Metroll, and Cressbells
Drycleaners
Thanks to supporters new and old .......
THE VERDICT BY THE COURIER’S GAVIN MCGRATH
BY GAVIN MCGRATH
I don't claim to be any kind of doyen of
fashion. I just know what I like, and I know
what I hate.
Usually I don't care.
So I can't think of too many fashion related
topics that would occupy footy fans at the
pub for any length of time, let alone move
them to discuss it over the Internet.
When the topic comes up about ugly
football jumpers, though, who can resist?
I was at work and googling something
obviously very important for my job (just go
with me on this one) when I stumbled upon
a messageboard discussion titled
something like ``worst football guernsey
ever''.
Apart from some obvious AFL obscenities
(the Hawthorn blue and brown diamonds
one seems to be a particular unfavourite,
along with anything ever worn by
Fremantle), I was a little surprised to see
the Lake Wendouree one mentioned. To
add insult to injury, a host of folk with no
connection to this region were nodding (in
an online sense) in furious agreement.
Now, I don't hate the Lakers guernsey. It's
certainly bright and has a grass parrot type
vibe to it, but I reckon the colours
themselves don't clash (much) and the
design isn't that cluttered. Of course, the
less said about the Lakers' yellow socks,
the better.
But my point is there are a host of footy
country and amateur guernseys that are a
whole lot uglier than the poor old Lakers.
When I played (very low grade) amateurs
footy, for example, there was a mob called
the Peninsula Pirates. Apart from the fact
that everyone was terrified of them _ they
were Pirates after all _ it was very hard to
play a team when their royal blue jumper
with a brown yoke hurts your eyes.
Ballarat Football League Record Round 6, 2010.
But this website discussion managed to find
some that were possibly worse.
The designer of the Orbost-Snowy Rovers
jersey, which has a winding light blue river
and a white bridge (truly!) on a navy
background, should be strung up by the
thumbs. It is terrible.
The design of the UHSOB strip, on the other
hand, is fine. But who thought bottle green
and poo brown would make good club
colours?
Apparently the Ormond Amateurs FC
reverses the Peninsula Pirates jersey,
making brown the dominant colour, with
light blue. Because, you
can never have too much brown.
Then there is the West Preston Lakeside
strip which, for no reason anyone can work
out, appears to have the SBS TV logo on it.
The Melville Rams take a perfectly
acceptable combination of green and gold,
and then proceed to stuff it up with a huge,
hideous sheep's head on the front. It would
terrify children.
There are, of course, plenty of other
shockers too.
Mercifully, the Ballarat Football League
clubs' jumpers are for the most part
relatively simple. And it is much harder to
stuff up ``simple'' than it is to stuff up
``complicated''.
Of the BFL strips, North Ballarat City,
Ballarat (this year's in particular), and
Melton South are all quite smart, I think
Sunbury's alternate strip looks terrific, and
Melton South's alternate jumper looks even
better than the regular one.
There may be too many Vees across the
league _ Bacchus Marsh has
great colours but the jersey looks too much
like a school jumper, while I reckon a yellow
sash would look good for Sebas _ but that's
a minor
criticism.
The truth is, though, if your team is winning,
then any colour combo look beautiful. Just
ask any Redan fan. Maroon and gold does
nothing for me, but Bear from work thinks
they are wonderful. And if you disagree, he
just points to the scoreboard.

Junior Clubs in Ballarat and surrounding districts can apply for a
share of more than $1 million in equipment grants
7 May 2010: Telstra has committed more than $1 million to support
eligible junior sports and community clubs across Australia with
equipment grants as part of the 2010 Telstra Assistance Fund.
Since 2003, the Telstra Assistance Fund has provided over 5,700
sports and community clubs across Australia with more than $7 million
worth of equipment.
These equipment grants are available for eligible junior rugby league,
AFL, swimming and surf live saving clubs, and the program will be
expanding to include the Telstra Country Music program and The
Australian Ballet.
Telstra Area General Manager, Bill Mundy for South West Victoria, is
pleased to offer local community organisations the chance to receive
these equipment grants.
“Through the Telstra Assistance Fund, we are able to provide the
opportunity for our local clubs to get hold of the equipment they need
to provide a better service for their members,” said Mr Mundy.
“These clubs are an important part of our local communities, and this
equipment has the potential to encourage participation by our young
people in their chosen field,” he added.
Telstra understands the passion local communities have for their
sports and community clubs and continues to support these
communities at a grassroots level.
Telstra’s commitment to supporting these clubs through Telstra
Assistance Fund equipment grants means that more people in the
community can reap the benefits of what these clubs have to offer.
To apply, eligible clubs simply need to go to the website at
www.ideasforgood.com.au/taf, identify the most appropriate equipment
package for their club and provide a summary of how the equipment
would benefit their club.
- ENDS -
Notes to Editor:
Telstra Assistance Fund is part of a new Telstra funded initiative, 'Ideas for Good', which explores how telecommunications is
contributing to the wellbeing of Australian communities in the environment, health, Indigenous Australia, families, communities and
the future. The ‘Ideas for Good’ website www.ideasforgood.com.au provides people with information and insights, and enables
people to hear from, and engage with, influential Australian community leaders and thinkers on each topic.
The Ballarat Football and Netball League proudly supports the Ballarat White
Ribbon Day campaign. White Ribbon Day is a campaign lead by men to end
violence against women.
White Ribbon Day – Ballarat
White Ribbon Day Campaign
The White Ribbon Day Campaign was established in 1991 by a handful of
Canadian men following the massacre of 14 women in Montreal. Their aim
was to urge men to speak out against violence against women.
The White Ribbon campaign has spread around the world with Australia
becoming a major contributor to the campaign. In 2008 the Commonwealth
Government allocated funding to the White Ribbon Foundation. 2008 also
saw more than 300,000 ribbons distributed across the country.
The Ballarat White Ribbon Day Committee (BWRDC) was established in 2004
to work on the Ballarat White Ribbon Day Campaign. Since then the
committee has been raising the profile of White Ribbon Day by distributing
White Ribbons, inviting men in the community to be White Ribbon
Ambassadors, and advertising in the media and talking at community
functions and schools.
The Ballarat White Ribbon Day Committee welcomes the support of the
Ballarat Football and Netball league and the CEO and White Ribbon Day
Ambassador of Rod Ward.
AFL Respect and
Responsibility Policy
The Ballarat Football and Netball League support the local White Ribbons Day campaign. White
Ribbon Day is a campaign by men to end violence against women.
AFL Respect and Responsibility Policy
The position of the AFL and clubs is that any form of violence towards women is abhorrent and they
recognise that there are significant health impacts of violence perpetrated against women. The AFL
supported moves by organisations to eliminate violence or the potential for violence and as an
organisation with strong emphasis on community responsibility they responded in 2005, with the
release of the Respect and Responsibility. This policy was established in partnership with VicHealth
after allegations of sexual assault were made against AFL footballers in 2004.
The AFL and 16 clubs adopted this policy to address issues of sexual harassment, sexual
discrimination and violence towards women. It represents the AFL’s commitment to addressing
violence against women and to work towards creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment
for women and girls involved in the football community. The Respect and Responsibility policy is
about shifting attitudes, ensuring all involved in the AFL community are aware that violence against
women and behaviour that harms and degrades women is never acceptable.
The AFL is committed to continuing to promoting equal and respectful relationships with women
and see respect, responsibility and participation as the key factors to achieving this.
