Ballarat FNL Interleague results 

The Ballarat FNL Representative 

side took away a group of nearly 

100 people for last weekends 

VCFL Division 1 Interleague 

Championship games against the 

Goulburn Valley FNL in 

Shepparton and all who took part 

represented the BFL and their Clubs with pride. Every 

individual should be proud of their efforts, and whilst we were 

not successful in winning our 1st VCFL Division 1 title since 1986 

there is no doubt that the Ballarat FNL continues to be well 

recognised and respected by the VCFL & our opposition 

leagues as the players involved certainly represented the 

league with passion and a great deal of pride. In addition, 

the conduct of all who went away was 1st class, and further 

enhanced the reputation of the Ballarat FNL and we thank all 

involved for their commitment and professionalism. 

Whilst it was disappointing not to take home the Division 1 

senior title, the commitment, intensity, passion and 

performance of the players over the 4 quarters was superb, 

and well done & thanks to all players. Special mention & 

thanks to our Coach Kieran Murrihy and his Assistants, and the 

preparation put in by the Coaching & support team was the 

very professional and thorough as they left no stone 

‘unturned’ in an effort to see the side prevail. 

The U18’s scored an incredible win, and after falling in excess 

of 40 points down in the 2nd quarter they were relentless in 

running over the top of the GVFL side. The BFL boys were 

simply too quick around the ground, and too hard in the 

contests for their opponents, and extremely determined to 

win, and after also winning against the RDFL they have scored 

2 great wins to be our most successful U18 representative side 

since 2006. The BFL should be proud of the effort put forward 

by the boys, who conducted themselves in an exemplary 

manner. These young footballers are the future of the league, 

and rest assured, from what they showed on the weekend 

that the future of the league is in good hands. Well done to 

Tim Beacham, AJ Beacham, Ed Z and Greg Stewart & the 

team. 

The Netball girls were defeated in 2 very close games in the 

U18 and Senior netball against high quality opposition, but the 

effort put forward by Jess McGowan & the Senior girls and 

Stacey McCartin and the U18 girls was fantastic, and they 

were also great ambassadors for the league. 

Thanks also to Andrew Esh and his tireless team of Trainers who 

volunteered their time to help the squad, and everyone else 

associated with the group - both for their efforts on the 

weekend and in the lead up to the WorkSafe Championships. 

The focus now returns today to our Club games. Good luck

Youth Girls Information Session & Clinic Successfully 

Attended 

Last Monday night the Ballarat FNL held an information session 

and football clinic for those interested in taking part in the first 

ever Youth Girls Football Competition in Ballarat. The night 

was attended by over 50 potential players, volunteers and 

officials confirming the interest in the newly formed 

competition this is set to start on Sunday July 11th 2011. 

AFL Victoria Female Football Manager Chyloe Kurdas was 

also in attendance on the night and was extremely pleased 

with the turnout saying that the Ballarat FNL is the first ever 

league to start a Youth Girls Competition from scratch with 

other competitions having started from a flow on effect of 

other initiatives introduced in the community. 

Players were excited about the news that the competition 

would be going ahead as many players signed registration 

forms on the night and took more forms away with them to 

pass on to friends and family to also get involved. 

Anyone interested in competing or volunteering in Ballarat’s 

first ever Youth Girls Football Competition should contact the 

Ballarat FNL on 5333 1977 or drop into Saxon House to pick up 

a registration form.

MESSAGE FROM THE WORKSAFE VCFL Will McGregor 

In years gone by many coaches and players amongst 

the footy environment believed that the “spirit of the 

team is at the bottom of the bottle!” There have been 

many examples where team bonding sessions that 

include a good old binge after a match or on a Sunday 

create great camaraderie amongst a group. This may 

be worthwhile as a once off when a team has an 

extended break but should not become a regular 

occurrence. Here’s why: 

Preparation 

Preparing for next week’s game should begin 

immediately once you are back in the change rooms 

amongst your teammates. It is important to rehydrate 

after a match or training session with appropriate sports 

drinks and water. Quenching your thirst with a 

non-alcoholic drink will eliminate your chances of 

consuming your first beer quickly when you are thirsty. 

Most country football clubs would have team selection 

on a Thursday night after training and invite the players to 

stay around and enjoy a meal amongst each other. This 

would be the perfect time to begin your fluid intake in 

preparation for Saturdays match. Alcohol is known to 

slow down one’s ability to react to an opponent or 

object 72 hours (or 3 days) following intake so drinking on 

a Thursday night amongst team mates isn’t the smartest 

option. Even after returning to 0.0% blood alcohol 

concentration (BAC), still many hours after, hand-eye 

coordination, judgement, the ability to process 

information, stamina, strength, power and speed are all 

negatively affected which are key elements to 

performing at your peak during a football match. 

Recovery 

I am sure that the majority of players and officials that 

read this article can relate to coming off the ground with 

a ‘cork’ or ‘ankle sprain’ over their playing days. When 

lying in the rooms listening to the coach pleading that 

you stay professional and recover as well as you can for 

the next week, in the other ear is your mate saying 

“tonight is going to be a great function, a few beers 

won’t hurt you”. Well, I’m sorry but that mate is wrong! 

During the recovery process alcohol masks pain, shutting 

down the bodies’ protection mechanisms required for 

tissue repair. Here is where you can make the right 

decision and stay off your legs, which will decrease the 

neural fatigue instead of hitting up the dance floor 

intoxicated under the illusion that there is nothing wrong 

with that swollen ankle. Consuming alcohol while injured 

causes vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) which 

increases the bleeding and swelling to the soft tissues or

injured area prolonging the recovery process. Soft tissue 

injury management requires reducing blood flow to the 

area in order to contain the injury. 

R- Rest- reduces further damage and neural fatigue. 

I-Ice- 20mins every 2 hours (First 48-72 hours) 

C-Compression- apply compression to reducing bleeding 

and swelling. 

E-Elevation- above the heart to stop bleeding and 

swelling. 

R-Referral- to a qualified professional such as a doctor or 

physio for precise diagnosis. 

When consuming alcohol your sleep patterns will also be 

disrupted. Recent sports science evidence indicates that 

sleep is one of the most important forms of recovery. 

After drinking, you don’t go into the delta stage of sleep 

(deep sleep) with decreases growth hormone release by 

up to 70%. 

Then there is the Sunday Hangover. After a heavy night 

of alcohol, a hangover can decrease fluid and food 

intake, therefore delaying the recovery process and 

increasing body fat stores as alcohol encourages you to 

eat fatty greasy foods. Being hung-over will immediately 

effect your preparation for the next week when you 

decide to stay in bed and miss the team’s recovery 

session. 

Putting it simply, for an athlete or footballer to recover 

100% alcohol must NOT be consumed but here are a few 

suggestions to minimise the effects of alcohol on 

performance when spending a night out with team 

mates: 

Eat before or while you are drinking- replenish muscle fuel 

stores by eating carbohydrate rich foods following a 

match. This will also aid in slowing the rate in which 

alcohol can be absorbed into the bloodstream. 

Drink slowly- take small sips and avoid sculling. Place 

your glass down in between sips. 

Keep yourself busy- stay occupied which will slow your 

rate of drinking down- play some pool or have a dance. 

Make sure you rehydrate before you go to bed- a great 

way to prevent a hangover is to drink water in between 

alcoholic drinks and also before you go to sleep.

CYBERSAFETY – A MODERN CONUNDRUM 

Barely a week goes by these days when we do not 

see the trials and repercussions of posts, tweets, 

texts and comments in the online world having a 

serious effect on the wellbeing of individuals and 

organisations. At the time of writing we read of the 

State Government considering significant criminal 

penalties for cyberbullying and stalking. 

Whether it be cyberbullying directed towards 

children in the schoolyard, parties getting out of 

control due to gatecrashers, people losing their 

employment due to careless Facebook or Twitter 

posts, and of course, the more famous incidences 

we see that have befallen AFL and other sporting 

stars who use new communications devices 

inappropriately – the risks and potential damage 

from new technology is a real and present 

conundrum. 

The mobile phone and the home computer have 

opened up a brand new world of communications 

that has far reaching benefits to us all – but also has 

fair level of risk in the mix as well. The WorkSafe VCFL 

has in recent seasons experienced the misuse of 

various forms of social media extending into our 

sporting environment. 

It has become clear that the misuse, and a general 

lack of education about the pitfalls of technology 

is required by society in general, and in our 

experience, by those that play and administer 

football in the WorkSafe VCFL. The WorkSafe VCFL 

has been required to deal with an increasing 

number of cases in which our members are 

aggrieved and have been vilified in the content of 

posts, texts, and blogs. 

With this in mind, the VCFL engaged Susan McLean 

of Cyber Safety Solutions to develop a cyber safety 

policy that would help to protect our members from 

inappropriate behavior and to provide a process 

for members to file complaints. 

Susan McLean is Australia’s foremost expert in the 

area of cyber safety and young people and was a 

member of Victoria Police for 27 years. Widely 

known as the ‘Cyber Cop’ she was the first Victoria 

Police Officer appointed to a position involving 

Cybersafety and young people. Susan has been 

working closely with the AFL on their education 

program for players on cybersafety to educate and 

minimise the risks and harm that this type of 

communication can cause. 

The VCFL Board has determined to take the same 

view of inappropriate online material as any other 

activity that, during the playing of a game, would 


result in disciplinary action. 

Cyberbullying includes, but is not limited to, the 

following misuses of technology: harassing, teasing, 

intimidating, racially vilifying or threatening another 

person by sending or posting inappropriate or 

hurtful messages, instant messages, text messages, 

phone messages, digital pictures or images, or web 

postings (including social networking sites and 

forums) and the sending, receiving and possession 

of naked or sexually explicit images of a person. 

Club members must also be aware that postings 

from their individual accounts, whether done by 

themselves or another person will remain the 

responsibility of the account owner. We have heard 

first hand that some people have divulged their 

passwords and account details to other people 

and friends – we strongly discourage this and 

remind them of how risky this action could be. 

If a WorkSafe VCFL member feels they have been 

the victim of such misuse of technology in the 

sporting environment, it is recommended they save 

and store the material on their computer or phone. 

They should then print a copy of the material and 

immediately report the incident to the relevant club 

or league representative. 

All reports will be investigated fully in accordance 

to VCFL Rule 5.0. Any proven charges will 

automatically lead to a minimum 2 match 

suspension for a registered player, or if by a non 

playing member, a penalty as determined by the 

League. Players charged with these types of 

offences for a second or subsequent time will face 

deregistration. 

The issue of cyberbullying and cybersafety is being 

taken very seriously by the WorkSafe VCFL, and the 

implementation of this policy, along with education 

sessions across the state, will be central in further 

fostering a culture of respect and care across our 

sport. 

We call on all players, parents and officials to 

carefully read the VCFL Cybersafety Policy and 

openely discuss the issue with their family, club 

members and supporters. 

Technology is part of our everyday lives and the 

misuse of such, whether it is intentional of not, will 

not be accepted by the WorkSafe VCFL.

BALLARAT Swan’s Chatter 

Today we play host to the Melton South FNC who this 

season has been the big improvers. Simonds Swans have 

a good record against the Panthers at Alfredton and 

hopefully will continue that trend. It was a disappointing 

day against the Lakers last round with only the U/18.5 

football and netball taking the points. The Simonds Swans 

seniors need to win today to create a buffer between 

fifth and eighth and the reserves and U18.5 need to win 

to keep in touch with the six. 

The Simonds Swan’s netballers also need to win in all 

grades to establish or keep in touch with their 

counterparts. 

Around the Club: Congratulations to Luke Fisher, Adam 

Sewell and Shane Hutchinson who were selected to play 

in the BFL Interleague side against Goulburn Valley FL. 

Unfortunately Ballarat could not claim the VCFL division 

one Championship and will have to try another day. 

However all was not lost with the U/18 combined side 

recording a good win. Congratulations to Andrew Cussen 

who contributed with a couple of goals, Taylor Stewart 

and Alex Stepnell on their selection.

BACCHUS MARSH Cobra’s Chatter 

The local derby at Darley Park had mixed results in both Netball 

and Football. 

Starting with Netball, the under 18.5’s have been plagued 

recently by injury however we managed to get a team on the 

court and while the girls fought hard, they were outdone on the 

day going down to the Devils 18-36. Best were Sarah 

Wheelahan, Courtney Dellios and Jacinta Reid. 

The C Graders played a good game and were able to get on 

top of Darley. The score at the final siren was 31-21 and our best 

on court were Kim Morris, Lorrae Closter and Karen Pawlowicz. 

Our Reserves also had a good win, 40-31 and were looking 

good this week – well done girls, keep up the good work. Best 

on court were Jenna Herring, Siobhan Deacon and Susan 

Dalmau. 

In the Seniors, we disappointed because, after leading all day 

we stumbled at the end and with three minutes remaining, the 

Devils were able to get on top of us. With a final score of 33-35 it 

was a close finish, but a loss to us. Best were Noni McClure, Katie 

Williams and Mariah Deacon. 

We welcomed last week’s Inter League break to give our 

injured players an opportunity to recover and congratulations 

to Noni and Katie (Seniors) and Jacinta (U18’s) all selected to 

play Inter League.

CLUB NOTES 

Up for grabs in this Derby was the Laurie 

Wheelahan/Greg Light Memorial Shield 

and in the Senior Football it was good to 

finally win against the old foe after a 

losing sequence of 10 years. 

It was great to bring the Shield back home although at half 

time, the Cobra’s were trailing by 22 points after Darley kicked 

a couple of late 2nd quarter goals but 9.4 to a scoreless Darley 

in the 3rd set up a good win by 27 points. Congratulation’s to 

Tyson Shea for winning Best on Ground. 

The Reserves lost by 11 points in a low scoring and tough tussle 

and certainly had their chances in what was a very entertaining 

Game. Final scores were 7.6 (48) to Darley 8.11 (59) 

In the U18’s there were only 3 goals in it at ½ time and they 

showed that they still need to work on their into 50’s. A solid 2nd 

half and the getting of some direction in to the forward line saw 

the lads kicking 8 goals to nil and they came away with a good 

result winning 14.11 (95) to 3.4 (22).

CLUB NOTES 

After a weekend’s rest due to the 

VCFL Interleague Final we are back 

to get back to footy and netball. 

Last round against North Ballarat City 

saw excellent results on the netball court with all four 

teams registering good wins – a great result. Today will be 

a terrific showdown between the competition ladder 

leaders East Point and second placed Bacchus Marsh, 

both teams are in good form and it will be a tough 

encounter, get over to the court and support our senior 

team who remain undefeated so far this season. 

We managed only one win from three in football, well 

done to Rick and the Reserve boys! Today we will be out 

to get things back on track and are looking for three solid 

wins, Bacchus Marsh are sitting close on all three grade 

ladders, so expect to see some very hard fought, tough 

football throughout the day. 

Reminder to all players, members and supporters that 

player awards will be held at the Red Lion Bar, Bistro & 

Cafe after today’s game – comeback and enjoy a quiet 

social drink and mull over the day’s games.

This week sees The Burra take on 

top contenders Lake Wendouree 

at Wendouree reserve. 

After a well earned rest all playing members are 

keen to take it up to their opponents in all grades 

and codes and take away the points. 

In Football all grades have had a hard couple of 

weeks on the track in the continual pursuit of 

perfection. The team is beginning to gel excellently 

and this will lead to success on field. 

The netball girls have attacked training with vigor 

also and are keen to claim some on field success. 

Many of the girls are presenting as excellent leaders 

of the club and are looking to take the team to the 

next level.

MELTON Blood’s Banter 

This week the Bloods are at home to Redan following a 

much welcome 2 week break courtesy of the bye and 

interleague matches. With both clubs sittin on 8 points, this 

will be a crucial game for both teams. Maccy Park is in top 

shape having nearly a full month off with no games played. 

With rain expected on the weekend, we hope the surface 

is conducive to good fast football. 

Congratulations to all players who represented the BFL 

especially our two Under 18 representatives, Tom Robinson 

and Ryan Davis. Well done boys you are the future of our 

club. 

Last Friday night the Bloods put on a very successful Mid 

Year Ball. Daniel (Mongy) Macrae and Ashlee Hill were 

crowned King and Queen of the Ball. Marty Abela and 

Helen Kight were nominated as having the best male and 

female masks. Another successful evening, thanks to 

Amy’s brilliant organising. Thanks also to the companies

It is with much regret we note the passing of Phil Aquilina 

who passed away suddenly last week. Phil was a 

dedicated member of the Meltonians and as the proud 

father of a former player James, was one of our more 

passionate supporters. Our sympathies go to Kerrie and all 

the family. He will be missed. 

All players by now have had ample opportunity to pay up 

their memberships. We don’t like doing it but if there is a 

tough selection decision to be made a fully paid up 

membership account might just make the difference.

CLUB NOTES 

After having last weekend off for the 

Interleague match, today we travel to 

Melton to take on a team that will be 

out to upset us so they can keep their 

season alive. We must make sure that we get the better of 

them and hold our place in the six. 

Congratulations to Jarrod Edwards, Nathan Blomeley & Dean 

Chester who were part of the Interleague team last weekend 

and even though they were not successful, I am sure they 

took much away from the weekend. 

Last round saw the Seniors take on the improving Sebastopol 

team. After an even 1st quarter we were able to break away 

in the 2nd quarter to open a handy break at ½ time. We were 

able to maintain that in the 2nd half to record a good win. 

Congratulations to Anthony Kilmartin on his 50th Senior game 

for the club today. 

The reserves also recorded a good win last round with a good 

team effort. Congratulations to Austin Murphy who will played 

his 150th game for the club last round and capped it off with 

5 goals. 

Congratulations to Hayden Singe, Hayden Dalitz, Blair Whelan 

& Ash Ballinger who were part of the successful Interleague 

team last weekend. I am sure they enjoyed their experience. 

The U/18.5’s also recorded a strong win last round with

bounce back well from the previous round.

This weekend saw the Devils take on cross-town rivals Bacchus 

Marsh. The first of the Devils Club Luncheons took place – thank you 

to everyone who came and a special thank you to Doug Hawkins 

who was kind enough to speak at the Luncheon. 

The under 18 netballers saw the day begin well for Darley, with the 

girls doubling the Marsh’s total to win 36-18. Jessica Whelan scored 

23 goals on the way to the 18 goal win. 

In C Grade, the Devils were outplayed by the Cobras in their 10 goal 

loss. Jacinta Turner contributed 12 goals, but it was not enough, with 

Darley going down 21-31. 

The Reserves match was another disappointing one for Darley, with 

Bacchus just too strong in the 31-40 loss. Sarah Thompson scored 17 

goals in the 9 goal defeat. 

In a tight match, Darley’s Senior netballers recorded a come from 

behind 2 goal win in the final netball match of the day. Elyce 

Carlyle scored 19 goals, with the girls coming from about 10 goals 

down to storm home over a tiring Bacchus team 35-33. 

The final score of 3.4.22 to 14.11.95 did not reflect the tightness of 

the Under 18 football match. In the game until 3 quarter time, the 

Devils were hurt by two yellow cards at the same time that kept 

them to 16 men for much of the final quarter, where a fast finishing 

Bacchus Marsh kicked a run of easy goals against a valiant, but 

ultimately undermanned, Darley side. Jarrad Mayfosh and Connor 

Hatfield played well for Darley, in the 73 point loss. 

With a record now of 5 wins and a two point loss, the Reserves are 

well placed for a finals berth in 2011, with another hard fought win, 

this time against the Marsh, taking their streak to 3 wins in a row.

CLUB NOTES 

Wasteful with the breeze in the first, and 

down by 7 points at the half, the Devils had 

to dig deep in the last to hold off Bacchus 

Marsh, who kept coming at them all day. 

Kane Stewart was good down back, while 

Zane Dix turned the game when thrust into the middle in the second 

half. 8.11.59 to 7.6.48 was the final score. 

Darley Senior’s were behind the eight ball from the first contest, with 

Brent Dryden going down 10 seconds after the first bounce with a 

suspected dislocated elbow, and were 15 points down at the first 

change. A 6 goal to zero second quarter though, saw the Devils up 

and about at half time with a comfortable lead of 22 points, but 

Bacchus Marsh came back hard, dominating the penultimate 

quarter and registering 58 points to nil to turn the game on its head. 

The Devils could not capitalize on the wind in the last, going down 

10.5.65 to Marsh’s 13.14.92 for the first time in a decade. Drew 

Edwards was best afield in the 27 point loss.

After the weekend off and coming off a 

strong performance against East Point, the 

senior footballers are eager to get down 

the highway and take on Darley. The 

reserves team is looking to get back on the winners board after their 

first loss of the season last round while the U18.5s are starting to click 

and will be looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. Best players the 

previous round against East Point in the seniors were Jason 

McNamara, Ayden George and Tyler George, reserves were Jarrod 

King, Liam Kilgour and Kyle Orr and U18.5s were Nathan Baddeley, 

Lachie O’Connell and Rupert Sangster. 

The netball sides had a tough day against quality opposition, with 

the A grade and U18s in-particular having a hard day while the B 

grade and C grade sides were competitive going down by 12 and 

15 goals respectively. Best players from last round were: A Grade- 

Jess Van Rossum and Tess Ryan, B Grade- Rebecca Williams and 

Courtney Walker, C Grade- Courtney Pearse and Jo Byrne and 

U18s- Sarah Fogas and Cassie Mason.

The Ballarat Football and Netball League support the local White Ribbons Day campaign. White Ribbon Day is a 

campaign by men to end violence against women. 

Family Violence statistics 

The following statistics show the high rate of family violence in our communities: 

• The Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Key Centre for Women’s Health, estimate that between 21-25 

percent of women are victims of family violence during their lives. 

• Many instances of family violence do not come to the attention of the criminal justice or welfare systems – as 

a consequence we may never really know the true extent of family violence. 

• In the majority of cases, men are the perpetrators of family violence with women and children the majority of 

victims: Victoria Police statistics indicate that approximately 80 percent of victims of reported family violence are women.

BFUA UMPIRES REPORT 

IMPORTANT RULINGS FOR ALL CLUBS TO BE ACROSS 

During the past two weeks all leagues have been 

contacted regarding the following VCFL rules that 

everyone needs to be aware of. 

These are not new rules although the BFUA have 

been directed by the VCFL to ensure that these 

are being monitored and enforced. 

Players Wearing Jewellery: 

Please note that under AFL Laws of the game 

(check your VCFL handbook, yellow section, 

section 9.2 a), it states that no item of jewellery is 

allowed to be worn by any player during the 

course of play. Please inform all players that any 

form of jewellery is prohibited and must be 

removed before making their way out onto the 

ground. Tape over jewellery will not be accepted 

so if players are doing this, they will no longer be 

allowed to get away with it. Please make sure all 

players are aware of this rule. 

Club Officials Spending Time on the Ground: 

Please refer to the white section, page 60, section 

17 of the VCFL handbook that covers official club 

runners/trainers and water carrier policy for the 

VCFL. In particular please pay attention to rule 

17.2 Duties, which covers the penalties that apply 

to club officials, trainers or water carriers for 

infringing against these rules. Please make sure 

your officials are aware of these rules.

After a week’s break, I’m sure all players would be 

looking forward to getting back into the swing of 

things this weekend. 

BALLARAT V MELTON SOUTH 

Last round, Ballarat suffered a heavy defeat at the 

hands of Lake Wendouree, while Melton South did not 

play as they won on forfeit to Sunbury. Melton South 

have had an extended break so they will be looking 

forward to getting out onto the court this week to 

battle it out for the 4 points. 

It is a must win game for both sides if they are to 

feature in any September action. Ballarat and Melton 

South sit 7th & 8th respectively, both 8 points out of the 

finals at present. The looser of this game may find it 

tough to make the finals, while the winner will stay in 

touch with the top 6. At home, Ballarat should be a 

fraction too strong

BACCHUS MARSH V EAST POINT 

This is the game of the round. Both teams have been 

in great form this year, although Bacchus Marsh had 

a loss last round to the much improved Darley, a 

game they were expected to win. Both teams had 

representative players who played for Ballarat in the 

Interleague clash last weekend, so I’m sure a few 

players from both sides will know their opponents 

games well. 

Bacchus Marsh will be keen to get back onto the 

winners list, but will find it hard against the inform side 

in the competition. 

Expect East Point to come away with the points in the 

second half. 


BFLNA Netball Report 

East Point by 11g 

LAKE WENDOUREE V SEBASTOPOL 

This should be a one sided contest. The superior and 

experienced Lake Wendouree team is a contrast to 

the inexperienced Sebastopol outfit. Sebastopol will 

experience the level I’m sure they are all aspiring to 

get too. 

Lake Wendouree will no doubt be as professional as 

always and come away with an easy win.

MELTON V REDAN 

Both Redan and Melton sit in 5th and 6th place 

respectively. Redan would start favourites in this 

game, but don’t be surprised if Melton come out hard 

with Redan having to work very hard for their victory. 

Redan had an outstanding win last week but away 

from home this will certainly be a tougher contest. 

Redan should have a bit more class right across the 

court.

DARLEY V NORTH CITY 

Both sides have improved this year and this was shown 

last round with Darley’s great win over cross town rivals 

Bacchus Marsh. North City on the other hand have 

been a lot more competitive this year. 

I expect Darley too be far too strong here and come 

away with a great win.

THE VERDICT By the Couriers Gav McGrath 

REPORTER is supposed to be impartial. Just report the facts 

without fear nor favour. 

However I would be lying if I said I came back from Shepparton 

without a twinge of disappointment. 

During the weeks leading up to the VCFL division one decider 

against Goulburn Valley, I almost felt part of the build up. Sure, 

I wasn't out on the training track like the players, or spending 

hours looking over lists of "probables" and "possibles" like the 

coaches. That said, there was a fair bit of work going on at The 

Courier and some late nights promoting the BFL's shot at 

"number one in country Victoria" status. I'm sure Kieran Murrihy 

can attest to some phone calls at strange hours. 

Last Saturday morning, as I climbed into the office Mitsubish 

Lancer for the drive up to Shepp, there was a sense of 

expectation and a belief the selectors had chosen the right 

team to do the job. 

That confidence was increased when the under-18 side 

steamrolled their GV counterparts after conceding the first 

seven goals of the match. After watching the end of the senior 

netball (so damn close!) and having a serve of Chinese food, I 

settled into the box at Deakin Reserve, expecting something 

similar from the seniors. 

There was one thing I probably hadn't factored in. Goulburn 

Valley was number one heading into the match for good 

reason. Because a lot of bloody good footballers play there. 

The GVFL's key forwards Paul Colbert and Paul Newman are big 

and can take a good grab, and players like Tim Looby and Tom 

Sheldon are glorious kicks.

They were too good. 

So what does that say for the players who wore the white and 

blue on the night? 

Well the backline did its job as well as could be expected given 

the quality of the ball being delivered into the GV forward line. 

On a couple of occasion s it wouldn't have mattered who was 

minding Newman and co (although the elastic arms of Mister 

Fantatic of the Fantastic Four might have helped). In short, Ryan 

Luke, Brett Chambers, Tim Malone and the rest did everything 

that could be asked. 

Up forward, Mathew Sutton and Paul McMahon also fought on 

bravely in the key posts despite often being outnumbered. They 

kicked four goals between them _ doesn't sound like much, but 

that represented two thirds of the total. The small forwards, 

though, had their hands full with GV's rebounding backs. 

Which leaves the midfield. Well, according to Murrihy, Ballarat 

actually won the contested possession and the stoppages, 

while "Jezza" Edwards, Ben Jordan, Adam Sewell and Jay 

Cheep were as busy as their counterparts. 

So what went wrong? 

Nothing really. There were a lot of turnovers, but to deny 

Goulburn Valley's pressure was the main cause would be petty. 

Ballarat failed to deliver the ball into the forward line quickly, 

but again the GV backs didn't allow a lot of space. And GV 

took a lot of marks in the forward line, but most were contested. 

So, yes, some disappointment but a realisation that Goulburn 

Valley is legitimately number one. Let's hope our boys get 

another look at them in two years to see if they still are. 


Interleague match: BFL outsized, outplayed on the day

THE Ballarat Football League will have to wait at least two 

years for another shot at the VCFL division one 

championship after being outclassed by reigning 

champion Goulburn Valley on Saturday night. 

The best from the BFL proved no match for their 

counterparts from the Shepparton region in the interleague 

clash for the top ranking – Goulburn Valley was triumphant 

12.13 (85) to 6.11 (47) under lights at Shepparton’s Deakin 

Reserve. 

An encounter with the Geelong Football League next year 

awaits the BFL, and the winner of that clash will earn the 

chance to play off for the division one prize in two years. 

Geelong defeated the Bendigo Football League by 20 

points at Skilled Stadium on Saturday.

top ranking. 

“We earned our shot at the division one title but we weren’t 

quite good enough,” Murrihy said. 

The Mornington Peninsula Nepean league, meanwhile, has 

leapt above Ballarat into second on the rankings table, 

with an upset victory over Ovens and Murray by two points 

in Frankston. Mornington Peninsula Nepean will play 

against Goulburn Valley next year for the status as top 

ranking country football league in the state. The BFL’s 

under-18 team ensured the league did not leave 

Shepparton empty-handed, with a rousing 20-point victory 

over their GV counterparts. 

Goulburn Valley, however, took the netball honours with 

come-from-behind victories in the senior (GV 49 d BFL 47) 

and under-18 (GV 35 d BFL 27) interleague netball 

matches.

Insurance to offer players and families health 

cover tailored for football and Netballers 

BALLARAT, 18th May 2011- The Ballarat Football 

League has announced its partnership with FIT 

Health Insurance, a new type of health 

insurance specifically designed for football and 

netball players and their families. FIT was 

launched in 2011 in conjunction with the AFL, 

Netball Australia, the AFL Medical Officers’ 

Association, JLT Sport and other leading sports 

bodies. 

The league’s relationship with FIT offers fantastic 

opportunities to Ballarat Football League Club 

members such as better benefits to manage 

injuries more likely to occur while playing sport 

as well as money going directly to the club for 

each policy sold. In addition, FIT is offering 

Ballarat Football League Club members their 

entire membership for free (up to the value of 

$200) when they sign up to FIT on a combined 

cover. *

significant out-of-pocket expenses, sometimes 

to the tune of thousands of dollars. FIT reduces 

the out of pocket expenses dramatically, Mr
