Rivalry Round is upon us
There are many fi erce rivalries alive
and well in the Ballarat Football Netball
League in the modern age with many
going head to head this weekend in a
jam packed round of matches. There are
fewer rivalries bigger than the one that will
take place at the City Oval this weekend
between Redan and Sunbury. Whilst
Redan has probably had the better share
of victory over the past 10 years which
has resulted in a fi nals record most clubs
could only dream about, its Sunbury who
has claim to the last laugh following their
emphatic win in the 2012 Grand Final.
Whilst Redan are notorious for their red
hot fi nals form, I’m sure they will still have
last September sitting in the back of their
minds when they the fi eld this weekend.
Then there’s the cross town rivalries
between Bacchus Marsh and Darley and
probably the match of the round between
Melton and Melton South. The interest in
these local rivalries is highlighted by the
huge crowds that fl ock to the grounds
during rivalry round to witness what
is sure to be two very good games of
football. Then there’s the battle between
East Point and Ballarat who will play
again over the ANZAC Day holiday in a
fi xture that has become traditional and
Lake Wendouree and North Ballarat City,
two teams who have a short but fi erce
rivalry with each other.
With three games decided by less than
a kick last weekend, the 2013 season
is shaping up to be one of the most
exciting yet.
Match Review Panel helps clean up
League
Progression in football is a common
theme these days and no one does
it better than the AFL itself. The use
of modern technology has made our
game the most highly scrutinized game
in the world with every player’s actions
analysed with their every move.
In the Ballarat Football Netball
League, over the past 3 years with the
implementation of fi lming senior football
matches we too are now able to evolve
and adopt similar principals to those at
the highest level. The development of the
BFNL Match Review Panel system is an
important innovation that supports the
actions of the offi ciating umpires and will
help cement our position as one of the
cleanest leagues in Country Victoria.
So how does it work?
Each season a panel of fi ve members
is appointed to oversee the incidents
raised by clubs or Umpire Associations.
Incidents may be raised via club offi cials
or any member of the BFUA or RDFUA.
Once an incident is raised, it is passed
on the Match Review Panel who will
then make a decision on whether or not
a player may have a case to answer to.
It is important to note that the Match
Review Panel are not making a decision
on whether or not a player is guilty, they
are merely deciding if a player may have
a case to answer to in reference to AFL
Victoria Country rules which are outlined
on a standard report form.
BFNL RECORD 2013 | 1
RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Across the Desk continued...
The Match Review Panel system fi lls
the gap that previously existed between
a player being reported and sent to
the Tribunal and a club requesting an
investigation into an incident that was not
picked up by the offi ciating Umpires.
The Match Review Panel is far more
effi cient as cases are generally fi nalized
within a week, costs are minimal to
clubs and cases are supported by vision
making it easier for panel members, both
Tribunal and Match Review, to make their
decision.
So far, the clubs have been generally
supportive of the new system.
The players are adapting to the extra set
of eyes on them and the supporters can
enjoy the real reason we all go to the
local footy of a weekend, and that’s to
watch the players play football.
Weekend Football Review: Round 1
AFTER what was very much a “soft opening”
the previous weekend, this past weekend saw
Round 1 proper of the 2013 Ballarat FNL season
played, with close results - apart from one obvious
standout!!
Ballarat 9.10.58 def. Lake Wendouree 7.13.55
This one turned out much closer than most though,
with the young Lakers side taking the game right
up to the more fancied Swans at Alfredton. Whilst
Ballarat led at every change, they couldn’t shake
the Lakers all day, and it was only a contentious
fi fty-metre penalty paid against Lake Wendouree
skipper Tim Malone in the dying stages of the
game, which resulted in a goal to Ballarat’s Daniel
Hobbs, which sealed the result for the Swans.
Chris Prockter was good with three goals for
Ballarat, with Mitch Rodd, Josh Crawford and
Braeden Deary standouts in red and white. The
Lakers received great service out of a trio of
players they either had limited or no service from
at all last season in Malone, ruckman Matthew
Tuminello and key running player Scott Carey.
Bacchus Marsh 17.9.111 def. Sebastopol 12.11.83
Bacchus Marsh opened their account for season
2013 at home against Sebastopol last Saturday,
but it wasn’t without some nervous moments as
a Burras side vastly improved from their season
opening showing against Darley took it right up to
the Cobras. It was only an eight goal to one fi nal
quarter by Bacchus Marsh that got them over
the line after trailing at the fi nal change. With key
forwards Adam Skrobolak and Abraham Kur out of
the side, the Cobras shared the goalkicking load
around, with ten different goalkickers led by Matt
Denham’s four goals. Daniel Velden, who kicked
three himself, was sensational for the Cobras, as
were usual suspects Tyson Shea and Michael
Suban. Sebastopol will take a lot of heart from their
opening three quarters, fi nding more goals from
Michael Powell (four) and Brad Carrigg (three) and
nominated Damien Loudon, Alex Brimacombe and
Tom Petersen for special praise.
Redan 13.15.93 def. Melton South 13.12.90
In what turned out to be a high-quality game,
Redan held off a fast-fi nishing Melton South
to record their opening win of the season by
three points at Mars City Oval. A six goal to one
opening quarter set up the win for the Lions, as
the Panthers, who were missing key players Doug
Thomas (suspension) and coach Mathew Sutton
(illness) clawed their way back into the game after
quarter time and very nearly ran over the top of
a Redan side that were visibly fading. The Lions
spread the goalkicking load with ten individual
goalkickers, and received great service from
youngsters Mitchell Phelps and Joel Matthews
along with former coach Brendan Peace, whilst the
Callus brothers, Joe and Michael, were amongst
Melton South’s better players with ruckman Marc
Dransman booting three goals.
North Ballarat City 24.13.157 def. East Point 6.12.48
Led by a ten-goal haul from former Rooster Derrick
Micallef, a well-drilled North City well and truly
lived up to their pre-season hype by thumping
East Point by 109 points under lights at Eureka
Stadium on Saturday night. After Micallef booted
the opening goal of the game inside the fi rst
seventy seconds, North City never looked back in
thumping the Lions. Micallef was the standout in a
North City side that looked quick and well skilled,
however he had great supply from midfi elders
Ryan Luke and Jake Hicks, with Tristan Cartledge
shading East Point ruckman Paul Koderenko to
give his star-studded midfi eld an armchair ride.
Coach Dan Jordan played a lone hand up forward
to kick four of East Point’s six goals on the night,
with Hayden Walters giving the Roos great drive
out of the midfi eld on a night they boys from
Eastern Oval will soon want to forget
Sunbury 11.4.70 def. Darley 9.14.68
The match many saw as being the game of the
round in the lead-up to last week certainly lived
up to its potential under lights at Clarke Oval,
with the reigning premiers scraping home by two
points. Despite leading at every change, Sunbury
escaped with a win after an inaccurate Darley
wasted their chances in the fi nal quarter by kicking
2.8 for the quarter, including an after-the-siren
shot by Harley Inglis which drifted wide to give the
Lions the win. Simon Clarke returned to form with
fi ve goals for Sunbury, with Scott Lobb fantastic in
his 200th game and recruit Andrew Duhau making
his presence known. Jake Edwards booted three
goals for Darley, with the Inglis boys, Michael
Clancy and Drew Edwards standouts for the Devils.
Redan vs Melton South Match Report Shaun Kelly
THROUGHOUT the fi rst quarter of their opening
match for season 2013 at Mars City Oval last
Saturday, Redan looked as if things would be very
much “business as usual” this season as they took
the improving Melton South to the sword in a big
way. But the Panthers clawed their way back into
the game to show that things may a little bit different
after all this season, as whilst the Lions managed
to hang on for a three-point win, Saturday’s game
showed that the gap between the upper and lower
rungs of the Ballarat FNL ladder might be closing.
Not that you would know this if you only saw the fi rst
quarter of the match, where Redan took a thirtysix
point lead into the fi rst break after a dominant
thirty minutes of football. It was very much the
Lions of old roaming around their own jungle, as
they racked up twelve scoring shots throughout
the quarter to just the solitary Anthony Cristofaro
goal by the Panthers. With coach Eammon Gill
constantly rotating his players to ensure fresh
legs facing a Melton South side missing their
key spearhead Mathew Sutton, the Lions looked
dominant. Whilst it took eight minutes before their
fi rst goal of the game, provided by Dean Chester
after Jack Jess was felled after disposing of the ball
in the centre of Mars City Oval and a downfi eld free
kick and fi fty metre penalty was paid, Redan soon
made up for it. With youngsters Mitch Phelps and
Tyler O’Sullivan-Kirchner, who played in the 2012
Redan Under 18½ premiership side, looking good
and experienced campaigners in Brendan Peace,
Matthew Hyden and Ryan Waight looking good,
at quarter time the phrase on the lips of most was
“how far Redan”.
Someone forgot to tell the Panthers this though,
as Sutton, missing through illness but still able to
perform his coaching duties, implored his players
to keep their workrate up and promised them that
good things would come of it. Ruckman Marc
Dransman was swung forward and responded
with two goals early in the piece, and with Colin
Simpkin also adding his name to the goalkickers list
after capping off a nice chain of play, the Panthers
had worked their way back into the game by the
mid-stages of the quarter, thanks in large part to
midfi elders Ben Peters and Dion Lawson starting to
get their hands on the ball through the middle of the
ground - an area where Redan were dominant in
the opening quarter. The Lions fi nished the quarter
well though, with both Phelps and O’Sullivan-
Kirchner kicking their second goals of the game
late in the quarter to ensure Redan a healthy 23
point lead at half time.
It seemed to take both sides a little bit to work back
into the game after the quarter time break, with the
ball rarely going past either side’s half-forward line
for the fi rst nine minutes of the quarter until Redan
recruit Simon Henning started a smooth passage
of play in the Lions half-back line that ended with
Damien Horbury kicking his fi rst goal of the game,
which stretched the Lions lead out to an even
fi ve goals. This seemed to sting the Panthers into
action though, especially Joe Callus who along
with brother Michael are the type of players that
opposition supporters would love to hate but who
add so much to the Panthers’ structure, booted a
pair of goals, framing Dransman’s third goal after
he cut off a chain of “panic” handballs in the Redan
backline to cut the Lions lead to just twelve points.
The time-on period of the thrid quarter though
proved pivotal in the outcome of the game, as
Redan, through Horbury, Jesse Dundon and Ash
Barker, kicked three goals just as Melton South
were starting to get a sniff to increase their lead
back out to 33 points by the time the three-quarter
time siren sounded.
They needed it as well, as after Grant Bell’s goal
of the week contender four minutes into the fi nal
quarter, the Panthers took over the game. Rex
Hickman, who had been quiet for much of the
game, started to exert his infl uence at centre-half
forward and was rewarded fi rstly for a push out in a
marking contest 25 metres from the Panthers goal
by booting his fi rst for the day, then took advantage
of some lazy defensive play by the Lions three
minutes later to intercept the ball and goal to bring
the Panthers to within ten points. When Anthony
Cristofaro booted his second goal of the game
from a forward line stoppage deep into the quarter
to cut the margin to three points, it appeared as if
the Panthers were going to pinch the game, but
Redan’s defence held strong in the dying minutes
of the game to ensure that they still had their noses
in front when the fi nal siren sounded to ensure that,
from a casual look at the post-Round 1 ladder, the
BFNL status quo remainded as it has for some
years, but anyone in attendance at Mars City Oval
last Saturday afternoon will tell you that, if Melton
South’s performance was any indication, things
may defi nitely be changing.
Message from Worksafe AFL Victoria Country
IT wasn’t the ending the Victoria/Tasmania
Kickstart team was hoping for, but fi ve wins
from six matches still ranked as a signifi cant
achievement.
With a team comprising almost entirely of
boys from country Victoria, the Vic/Tas team
fi nished the U15 Indigenous National Kickstart
Championship in Townsville as runners up.
After remaining undefeated in the preliminary
rounds of the carnival held from April 8-12, the
Victoria/Tasmania team was unable to outpoint
defending champions Western Australia in the
grand fi nal, losing 9.18 (72) to 6.5 (41).
But despite missing out on the premiership
medallions, the team showed enormous
improvement throughout the week and
impressed onlookers with an exciting brand of
football.
Of the 27 boys that represented Victoria/
Tasmania, 20 of them hailed form regional
Victoria.
From Lucknow in East Gippsland to Robinvale
in northwest Victoria, all regions in Victoria
were represented, giving team members a
chance to learn more about their cultural roots
and form new friendships with boys from all
over Australia and beyond.
AFL Victoria Indigenous Programs Manager
Aaron Clark said it was a great opportunity
for participants to share common challenges
and increase their peer support network of
boys that are facing similar challenges as
indigenous young men.
“In the Kickstart program AFL Victoria
facilitates a process where participants can
connect with each other and share elements
of their unique culture, which really does
strengthen their self esteem, confi dence and
surround them with positive role models.
“The program recognises the enormous talent
pool of indigenous players in Victoria and
enhances our ability to keep that talent in the
mainstream talent pathway.”
Victoria/Tasmania was led superbly by cocaptains
Jy Simpkin (Mooroopna) and Anthony
Young (Newborough), with Young being named
Victoria/Tasmania’s player of the carnival.
After a week of impressing scouts with his
ability to fi nd his own ball and break the lines,
the 15-year-old said it was privilege to be part
of the Kickstart program.
“It was great to lead my teammates at the
championships and get out there and play
against the other states,” Young said.
“It was really good to meet new people and
learn about their culture and the things they
have to deal with.”
I’ll defi nitely stay in contact with a lot of the
guys and we’ve already planned to meet up
and attend a few AFL matches this year.”
As well as fi tting in six matches and recovery
sessions in a busy fi ve days, the team also
attended education sessions focused on a
range of topics including talent pathways,
nutrition, identity, social media, drugs and
alcohol and employment.
Team members had the chance to listen to
guest speakers such as Bonita Mabo, wife
of the late Eddie Mabo, who spoke of her
husband’s story and the struggles he endured
to have the land rights of indigenous people
acknowledged.
Renowned musician Jeremy Donavan also
spoke to the group about growing up and
not knowing of his Indigenous roots until later
in life, and the struggles which came about
through being confused with his identity.
After such a strong performance at the
championship, many members of the Victoria/
Tasmania team are expected to be named
in the Flying Boomerangs squad which will
compete in Division 3 of the AFL U16 National
Championships in July, followed by an
international tour.
ANZAC Day Footy - lest we forget.
“ANZAC Day holds a special place in the Australian
psyche – an ongoing testament to the spirit, undying
courage and camaraderie of the Australians and
Kiwis who formed part of the Australian and New
Zealand Army Corps. Dawn Services around the
country send chills down the spine beyond those
infl icted by the climate at that time of the morning.
Later in the day, Diggers march proudly at parades
as the rest of us doff our collective caps – it is the
least we could do to pay our thanks. ‘Spinners’ are
in ample supply as games of two-up take centre
stage for a day”.
We at the East Point Football Netball Club and the
Ballarat Football Netball Club Salute those diggers
and welcome you to the High Mountain Water
Eastern Oval on Anzac Day to watch the Red Lion
Kangaroos do battle with the Ballarat Swans in
Rivalry Round in a manner that would make those
Diggers Proud. The day’s format is slightly different
to most match days and goes like this.
First bounce of the Reserves is at 1.00pm followed
26 | BFNL RECORD 2013
by the Senior Bounce at 3.15pm with the U18.5’s
Twilight match to start at 5.30pm which should be a
great opportunity for the U18.5’s to strut their stuff in
front of the whole Football Netball Club and Banners
should have them out and about for this great day.
Don’t forget the Roogirls are a part of this great
day as well with some action packed games on the
Courts.
The Roogirls start at 1.00pm with the “C” Bombs,
B Grade at 2.00pm, Seniors at 3.00pm and the
U18.5’s at 4.15pm.
If you would like to be apart of this exciting Football
Netball Club Stroudy will be in the Social Rooms
with the Membership packages of you to purchase.
Being our fi rst home game Zinger will be looking
forward to see you at the Zingers Bar for all the
Banter you can throw at him.
Special thanks to the Red Lion Hotel and High
Mountain Water for there generous support once
again of this great club.
EVERY HEART BEATS TRUE… GO ROOS.
Ballarat Swans Chatter
Today (Anzac Day) we travel across town to take
on old rivals East Point who over the years have
been a diffi cult opponent especially on their
own turf. Today is also a special day when we
remember the fallen in past wars and both clubs
will play for the Anzac Day Medal.
FOOTBALL: Three wins started our season on a
positive note but the Ballarat Swans did not have it
their own way in the seniors. In a scrappy and low
scoring affair the Swans managed to get home
by three points. ‘Bakes’ will be looking for a more
improved performance if we are to beat East Point.
The reserves and U/18.5 started their respective
seasons with good wins and will be looking forward
to repeat last week’s performances.
NETBALL: A mixed day for the netballers with two
wins and two losses. The ‘A’ grade girls came up
against a strong ‘Lakers’ outfi t and unfortunately
could not put the score on the board. The closest
game of the day saw the ‘B’ graders go down
narrowly. The winners on the day were the ‘C’
grade who celebrated a rare win against the
‘Lakers’ and the Under 18.5 girls who continued
on from there successful 2012 season.
Around the Club: Last week Alfredton Reserve
was abuzz with the fi rst dual gate for the 2013
season. The new number 2 Oval catered for all
the juniors from early Saturday morning until late
afternoon, a concept the Ballarat Football Netball
Club and Ballarat Junior Football Club have been
waiting on for years.
Congratulations to Nick Garner on reaching 100
Senior Club Games today.
After today’s game it’s back to the Black Hill Hotel
for a drink and a chat and maybe a bite to eat.
Memberships are now available and all existing
members who wish to renew their memberships
and supporters who wish to take up a
membership are urged to contact Mark Taylor at
the Club.
GO SWANNIES!!!
RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Lake Wendouree Lakers Notes
It was good to get the season fi nally away
against Ballarat at their place. The seniors had a
terrifi c start to the year and more than matched
Ballarat in skill and tenacity but could not get
the ball through the big sticks. If they dish that
endeavour up each week they will be fi ne. The
reserves went in undermanned with quite a few
on the injured list and 2 late withdrawals from
the seniors not helping their cause. They need
to take a leaf out of the seniors book and when
the things are not going their way you can still
play for the jumper. The under 18’s also had
a tough initiation to the season but showed
some positives at times. They all need to get
to training and get behind Andrew and we can
expect signifi cant improvement from them.
In the netball A grade results across the league
indicate that this season will be a much more
even competition. The under 18’s played
well but struggled to score in the last quarter
and were beaten by last years premiers. C
30 | BFNL RECORD 2013
grade were short of players but managed to
be competitive with lots of positional changes
going down to a stronger Ballarat team. B grade
showed promise with a 3 goal win following a
very hard fought match. A grade had a very
solid win beating Ballarat by 33 goals. The new
players performed well and our ever reliable
defensive players stood up well against the
swans attack.
This Saturday will be our fi rst home game and we
will be hosting North City so we will need to be
at our best in both the footy and netball. After the
game all senior players are expected to come
back for a quick drink after the game, bring
your sponsor and get around the supporters
and opposition players. Later we are having a
function to introduce our new players and there
is an op shop theme which should suit some of
our players given their usual attire, there will be
meals served as part of the entrance fee.
Go Lakers!
North Ballarat City
Great to be back actually playing football and
netball after a very solid pre-season for all
teams.
On the football side, all of our players showed
the benefi t of that pre-season with great wins to
all three sides. The seniors comfortably defeated
last year’s preliminary fi nalists with Derek
Micaleff kick-starting his career at North Ballarat
City in fi ne form however it was a great all round
effort from all players.
In the netball, our A grade showed they will be
a force to reckon with in 2013 after defeating
perennial fi nalists East Point for the fi rst time
since the club re-entered the BFL. Despite losing
the B, C and Under 18.5 games, all three teams
were very competitive and showed that they too
will be pushing all opposition sides this year.
After today’s games, the players have organised
an “I-pad shuffl e” and “Rubix Cube” night
back at the North Sports Club from 7.30 pm.
Entrance $15.00 which includes 1 song,
$10.00 if not buying a song. Drinks at bar
prices. Dress: Rubix cube colours.
Please keep Saturday, 15 June 2013 free for
our Goods &Services auction. Donations for
that night are required. See Chris for details.
Today we visit Lake Wendouree who will be
keen to atone for their close loss in round 1.
While last week was great, this is a new week
and we need the same commitment to come
out on top.
The BFL has dubbed this weekend rivalry
round and perhaps the biggest and most
interesting match will be in the netball when
Gina, Louise and Stacey McCartin return to
Dowling St to take on their old team.
Our teams desperately want to play fi nals this
week and winning these big games will go a
long way to achieving that aim.
Darley Devils Diary
The DFNC would like to offi cially welcome all
BMFNC members and supporters to our Round
3 “DERBY” that will see both clubs fi ght it out for
the Light Wheelahan Memorial Shield at the Devil
dome. A huge welcome and thanks to all of the
Devil’s sponsors today. We as a community should
be proud that two clubs are alive and healthy in
the same town, in a division one country football
league. It’s great to see rivalry in country football
still strong and alive. We must welcome the LIGHT
and WHEELAHAN families, whom our prestigious
shield is named after. Who will take the shield
home today? Good Luck to all sides – netball and
football.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank
the BMFNC, in conjunction with the DFNC, on
promoting the game with a scheduled junior game
to be held at half time of the main game - not to
mention the hard work Doug Hawkins and Grant
Wright have put in organizing a pre-game function
that was held yesterday at our major sponsor
STONEY’S hotel. For those who attended, we hope
it was entertaining as promised.
Thank you to our local Bacchus Marsh RSL
for their co-operation and working with us to
promote the spirit of the day. We are honored
to have respected war veterans attending and
we ask everyone for a minute’s silence as we
pay respect to those who have fallen, and whom
allow us to have the freedom we have today…
Lest we forget.
Thank you to all volunteers who helped in
making today possible. As we know, without your
continued support football clubs don’t exist, we
really appreciate your relentless hard work.
Socially after the game, one of our own – SUCCY
- will be playing acoustic, so let’s all get around
and keep the vibe as strong as possible. We will
also be auctioning off our players groups, which
will give someone a chance win $$$ at the end
of the year.
Don’t forget our buy a brick fundraiser, which is
currently under way. For further enquiries please
see Digger Edwards who can be located on the
day .
Bacchus Marsh Cobra Chatter
Last week we welcomed Sebastopol to Maddingley Park. The
senior match was a great team effort by our young team with our
last quarter by far a stand out with the players sticking together
to kick 8 goals. The boys are taking onboard all the coaches
directions and requests and if the last quarter is anything to go
by they have the skill and talent to keep playing as a team. It
was great to have Trevor Hilton play his fi rst game with the club
and also show the depth of our juniors with 17 Year old Ryley
Stuhldreier playing a great fi rst game in the seniors, terrifi c effort.
The atmosphere seemed fl at before our reserves match and this
resulted in a hard fought game. There was plenty of intensity in
the game and with four points being the difference in the fi nal
score, it showed the determination of both teams. There is still
room for improvement and Rick and the boys were pleased to see
Swazza back on the ground.
Again the U18.5’s were light on for numbers with injuries
and promotion. However their talent and determination was
outstanding as we accounted for Sebastopol. Our on ball group
was dominant all day and our ball use improved from the last
game. All players had signifi cant contributions during the game
and the players can go into our next game against Darley full of
confi dence.
Another good day for the netball girls with all teams winning. The
U18.5’s had a close one getting up by one goal and best players
were Jaimee, Jaleesa, and Elysia. C grade had another big win
with Googs, Sammie and Vanessa our best. B grade won well and
played some good netball in patches. Best players were Tayler,
Jenna, and Lorrae. A grade started well with a great fi rst quarter;
from then on the match was played on level terms with a much
improved Sebas. The girls won by 10 goals and best were Amy
and Liv.
The Cobra’s held their fi rst function last Saturday night when
Hollywood came to Maddingley Park! Around 70 people attended
the star studded night which also included appearances by
Superheroes Ace Venture, Marilyn Monroe, Chopper Read,
Maverick and even a penguin from Happy Feet waddled in. There
were three ‘Oscars’ awarded on the night. Most Unique Costume
was awarded to Lady Gaga, ‘One of a Kind’ went to super hero
Flash Gordon and ‘Best Costume’ was taken home by The Joker.
A great night was had by all with dancing and random karaoke.
Be sure to make it to the next function as they make for a great
chance to unwind and get to know others within the club. Special
thanks to all those who helped out.
Memberships: Supporters are encouraged to help the club
by purchasing a membership for season 2013. A range of
RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Redan Lion’s Den
Today we welcome Sunbury to Mars City Oval.
We should again see another classic encounter
between our 2 teams as both teams are coming off
nail biting wins last week and both teams will be out
to record another win this weekend.
The Seniors recorded a nail biting win last week
over Melton South. After a great 1st quarter where
we opened up a handy lead, South were able to
narrow the gap throughout the rest of the game
and very nearly got the win. We will have learnt
much from that and will be out to improve on that
today.
Last week saw the Reserves start the season with
a very good win. A 6 goal 1st quarter was a good
way to start the season and the boys built on that
for the rest of the game. This was good team effort
and we hope they can continue that again today
against Sunbury.
The U/18.5’s also started the season with a good
win. After a tight 1st half the boys broke away in the
3rd quarter with a 7 goal to nothing effort and were
40 | BFNL RECORD 2013
able to continue that in the last quarter to record a
good win. A good team effort and we will need to
repeat that again today if we are to defeat Sunbury
who are also coming off a good win last week.
Last week saw the Netballers have good wins in
3 grades while the Senior team had a draw with
Melton South. A fairly good result last week, but
we will be out to make it 4 out 4 this week over the
improving Sunbury teams.
Tonight we are holding a Tiki Party in The Den.
Tickets at the door with great music!!!
We would like to thank the following Sponsors for
their support this season;
Sunbury Lions Den
We travel up the highway today for the
grand fi nal rematch in what should be a
high standard game of both football and
netball.
Last week against Darley we used our get
out of jail free card in the seniors getting up
by 2 points,Simon Clarke was a standout
for the night bagging 5 goals including a
gem in the last quarter. The reserves were
a little disappointing going down easily to
a very good side whilst after a 9 goal fi rst
quarter the young lion lions got the points.
On the netball front after keeping all
players on the court the a grade and
b grade sides had their 1st wins of the
season whilst the c grade and under 18s
played some great netball their 1st win is
just around the corner.
don’t forget memberships are now due,
see Jamie or Phil for payment options.
McDonald’s Goal
RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Melton Bloods Banter
Results from the early season opener against
Sunbury were mixed. The Netball Girls did very
well with 4 out of 4 wins while on the football side
the Reserves scored a great win over the Lions.
The Seniors held their ground until just before half
time but then let the game slip away. The Unders
played well and were very competitive all day
going down in the end by a slim but showed a lot
of promise.
We are looking forward to a big crowd at our fi rst
night games for 2013 against the home town rivals.
We are hoping for a big day. There have been a
few players swap between the two clubs in the
preseason and there is a lot of interest in seeing
how it all pans out.
Thanks to our three new team mangers who
battled hard with the paperwork. It is a tough job
fi rst round but should get better as time goes on.
An urgent call for volunteers. We need timekeepers
and interchange stewards for all three teams. Give
your team managers and your team a helping hand.
Without assistance, the games cannot proceed.
Thanks also to Linda who is now updating our
Melton South Panther Proffering
Well what a whirl wind weekend at City Oval last
week. Just to spice things up, I want to start off with
the senior netballers……what a game!! The girls
were fantastic and stuck at it for the full 4 quarters
to draw with last year’s Grand Finalists. Our netball,
coordinator, Jenna Nicolle was great all game, as were
Andrea Tai and Jill Van Der Ross. With a great mix of
youth and experience the supporters at panther land
have no doubt that some big wins are just around the
corner. Unfortunately across other grades of Netball,
the Redan girls proved too strong, but with better
numbers, regular training and a desire to improve,
results will come our way.
And speaking of great games, in an epic that was
reminiscent of some of the great comebacks that the
Panthers have produced in the past, such as coming
from 7 goals down at Darley Park a few years back,
our senior side showed a lot of grit and courage, and
to be honest, should have got the 4 points. The day
started badly when regulars like the coach, Thomas
and Sullivan all out through injury/ suspension/ VFL
duty meant that we had to get other players to step
up to fi ll the breech and at quarter time, the breech
had not been fi lled. But through the efforts of our own
version of the Krakour brothers (Mick and Joe Callus)
and the Scott brothers (Corey and Dion Lawson) we
worked our way back in the game and could have
easily hit the front in the dying stages of the game.
New boy Simon Collis also showed plenty of dash and
the ever reliable Dracca worked tirelessly all day to
snag 3 goals. A 3 point loss whilst never satisfactory,
does point to us having plenty of success this season.
If we win the close ones, we’ll make the fi nals.
Unfortunately for the reserves and Under 18’s,
once again Redan showed their depth across all
grades, but as a club, we look at the Redans of the
competition and we make no apology to wanting
to emulate them in the way they go about it and the
success they have.
This week we head to MacPherson Park against our
arch enemy, Melton. With the comings and goings in
the off season both ways, there is no doubt that a tight
tussle will evolve. If we go harder for longer then we
can be victorious across all grades, and remember…..
the best team on the ground is ours! Go Panthers.
BFLNA Netball Report BFNL Netball Manager Kara Murray
WITH Round One properly kicking off in the
Ballarat FNL last weekend, we saw a plethora
of results with some tight games including a
draw in the Gull & Company A Grade netball
competition last weekend.
Ballarat, hosted Lake Wendouree with the
Lakers playing a strong Season Opener with
an emphatic 57-24 win. Melanie Allen proved
dominate in goals scoring 33 of the Lakers 57
goals with an overall 80.5% accuracy for the
match. For the Swans, K O’Neill and H Fidler
shared the score with 12 goals a piece. Ballarat
won the C Grade and Under 18.5’s comfortably
with Lakers winning the B Grade in a close
one, scores locked at three quarter at 19. Lake
Wendouree fi nishing 27-24.
Bacchus Marsh also had a second strong win
for the season proving to be a fi nals contender
again for 2013 with a win over Sebastopol,
across all 4 senior divisions. Final A Grade
score being 50-40. The last quarter of the A
Grade game showed some accurate shooting
with Susan Dalmau, GS from Bacchus Marsh
shooting 10 from 10 and Georgia Cann, GA
from Sebastopol shooting 8 from 8 attempts.
The game was a strong defi nsive battle with
Amy Reynolds taking out best for Bacchus in
GD and Adrainna Cann getting the 3 votes for
Sebastopol in GK.
North Ballarat City hosted East Point in a close
match coming from 4 down in the fi rst quarter
with a 14 goal second quarter to hit the lead
by 3. They fi nished the match only winning
by 6 after a strong 10 goal quarter fi nish by
East. Bibby Jordyn had an outstanding match
shooting 29 from the 42 goals shooting at 80%
accuracy. Emma Farrell was also strong in
goals for East Point scoring 26 of their 36 goals.
East Point were victorious in all other senior
grades winning B Grade 35-23 with Ebony
Piera strong in goals scoring 27 out of the fi nal
35. C Grade fi nal score was East Point 33-20
and Under 18.5’s East Point again victorious
32-27
Sunbury took away their fi rst win last weekend
hosting an impressive Darley at Clarke Oval.
Sunbury’s new recruit Sophie Gunn started
sensationally scoring 17 of Sunbury’s fi rst half
23 score. Sophie left the game ill and was
replaced by Michelle Robertson shooting the
3rd quarter with 100% accuracy 15 goals out of
15 attempts. The game was dynamite through
the mid court with best players for Sunbury
being Prue Scott and Lauren Gilcrist in C and
WD and Darley’s ex Vixen player Talei Bari and
Alix Edwards infl uential in their mid court in C
and WA. Sunbury were comfortable winners in
the B Grade match 29-16 with Darley taking the
4 points in close matches in both the C Grade
and Under 18.5’s matches.
Redan hosted Melton South at City Oval last
weekend with Melton South coming home
strong in the second half to draw the match
at 31 all. Redan rotated their full list of 10
throughout the game but still couldn’t pull away
with the win. Hollie Frew took away the three
votes for Redan with an outstanding game
running centre for three quarters with Lauren
Bennington and Cass Hobbs running strong
matches in the defensive mid court and goal
defensive end of the line up. Proving an overall
high defensive game showed best on the day
for Melton South were Jenna Nicolle running
the WD/C positions and Jill Van Der Ross in
Keeper keeping Kerrie Dendle to 20 goals.
Melton South’s goaler Andrea Tai came away
with also a total of 20 goals and 2 votes for the
match.
