MANY of you may have noticed that
colour photo that appears on the inside
front cover of the Ballarat FNL Footy
Record. The “No Limits – United through
Sport” advertising campaign that the
Ballarat FNL has established is further
evidence of our commitment to creating
and maintaining a warm and welcoming
environment within the Ballarat FNL for
all players and supporters regardless
of race, religion, gender or sexual
orientation.
In addition to the advertising campaign,
the Ballarat FNL has introduced new
vilifi cation By Laws that have come
into effect for the 2013 season and
adopted the new AFL Victoria Vilifi cation
and Discrimination Policy. The new By
Laws have been designed to show our
commitment to creating and maintaining
the above mentioned environment, and
will send a very strong message that as
a league we are not willing to accept
such inappropriate behavior of this type
at league fi xtures – and that we do not
want people who may behave in this
manner at our games.
The following By Laws have therefore
been implemented for the 2013 season:
1) Any registered BFNL player who is
guilty of racial or religious vilifi cation
of a BFNL player, offi cial or spectator,
or abuse based on sexual orientation,
will incur a minimum of a 4 week
suspension. This suspension may
be increased at the discretion of the
Ballarat FNL Board and/or Ballarat
Tribunal if they see fi t.
2) Should a member or supporter of a
BFNL Club be found guilty of racial or
religious vilifi cation of a BFNL player,
offi cial or spectator, or abuse based
on sexual orientation, the spectator
will incur a minimum of a 12 week
suspension from attending BFNL
fi xtures and his/her Club fi ned an
amount of no less than $250. This
suspension may be increased at the
discretion of the Ballarat FNL Board
and/or Ballarat Tribunal if they see fi t.
3) Should a BFNL Club have a 2nd racial
or religious vilifi cation offence, or a
2nd offence involving abuse based
on sexual orientation (across all
playing grades) the Club will be fi ned
no less than $500 and this fi ne may
be increased at the discretion of the
Ballarat FNL Board and/or Ballarat
Tribunal if they see fi t.
4) Should a BFNL Club have a 3rd racial
or religious vilifi cation offence, or a
3rd offence involving abuse based on
sexual orientation (across all playing
grades), the Club will be fi ned no less
than $1,000 and may face the loss of
premiership points from each grade
of their football and netball sides.
Further, this fi ne may be increased
at the discretion of the Ballarat FNL
Board and/or Ballarat Tribunal if
they see fi t. In addition, the Club
will be asked to undertake “Culture
Awareness Training” for all players
and members that will be presented
by a Facilitator appointed by the
Ballarat FNL.
Across the Desk continued...
In addition to the above, the Ballarat
FNL is arranging with AFL Victoria
Country to conduct “BROOS” (Bouncing
Racism Out Of Sport) training for all
Ballarat FNL Clubs and their players -
from Under 10 through to Senior football
& netball over the course of the 2013
season.
The Ballarat FNL will also be conducting
an “Indigenous & Multicultural Round”
(Round 6 Saturday June 1st) that will
promote the leagues commitment to
creating and maintaining a warm and
welcoming environment for all players
and supporters regardless of race,
religion or sexual orientation.
It goes without saying that we do hope
that all Ballarat FNL supporters do assist
us in ensuring that Ballarat FNL fi xtures
are free from any form of vilifi cation, and
that we do create an environment that
welcomes all players and supporters
Weekend Football Review
THE Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball
League commenced last weekend with three
games brought forward from later rounds in the
season to accommodate a “Season Opener”
round, which brought expected results amongst
senior ranks.
Sunbury 18.16.124 def. Melton 8.12.60
On a day where they unfurled their 2012
premiership fl ag and were missing fi ve players
from the side that triumphed so grandly on that
last day in September, the Lions started off their
premiership defence in expected style, defeating
Melton by 64 points.
After a fi rst half which saw the Bloods more than
take it up to their highly fancied opponents and
trail by just 22 points at half time, the premiers
sauntered away in the second half, with a six
goal to one third quarter to Sunbury the response
after a half-time rev-up by coach Rick Horwood.
Melton hit back in the fi nal quarter to show that
they will be one of the improvers of 2013, but the
Lions kicked the last four goals of the match to
post their 64 point margin.
For the victors, Brett Chambers was his usual
sold self in the back half, recruit Andrew Duhau
showed some promising signs and small forwards
Xavier Linton and Mathew Medcraft kicked seven
goals between them for the day. Melton got great
service out of Nick Gale and Chris Webber, with
Matthew Notman their only multiple goalkicker
with two goals in his fi rst game since transferring
from cross-town rival Melton South
Sebastopol 11.3.69 lost to Darley 26.11.167
After their season fi nished after the fi rst round of
the fi nals series last season, Rod McPherson’s
Darley signalled that they are looking to make
amends in 2013 with a thumping 98 point season
opening victory against a hapless Sebastopol last
weekend.
In much the same fashion as Sunbury did against
Melton, the Devils pulled away strongly after half
time, registering 16 second-half goals to just
fi ve from the Burras to start their season off in
sensational fashion ahead of a mouth-watering
clash against reigning premiers Sunbury this
weekend.
With seven multiple goalkickers, headed by
fi ve goals from superstar Jake Edwards and
touches of class around the ground from
Shane Page, Dane Grenfall and Brad Inglis, the
Devils responded to a half-time call from coach
McPherson to “play smarter” and lifted their
game up a cog after half time.
Sebastopol found great service from new recruit
Stephen Keillier, plus three goals from each of
Michael Powell, Ben Trew and Brad Carrigg
Melton South 15.14.104
def. Bacchus Marsh 11.15.81
In a clash under lights between two clubs
expected to be amongst those fi ghting for a
place amongst the bottom rungs of the top six
this season, a bout of wayward kicking in the
opening quarter by Bacchus Marsh cost them
any chance of an opening week victory, with
Melton South claiming a 23 point win in their
showdown at Melton Recreation Reserve last
Saturday night.
With their seven scoring shots in the opening
quarter all missing the two main sticks, Doug
Hawkins’ young Cobras were forced to play
catch-up football from there on, and couldn’t
bridge the gap between themselves and the
Panthers despite some impressive performances
from their younger players.
Four goals from new Melton South coach,
and reigning Tony Lockett Medallist, Mathew
Sutton and four from Rex Hickman were the
shining lights up forward for the Panthers in an
impressive display, with recruit Dion Lawson and
Johnathon Doran starring on the night.
Bacchus Marsh lost tall forward Adam Skrobolak
in the opening contest of the night through a
hamstring injury which left them depleted up
forward for the rest of the match. Michael Suban
was fantastic with two goals in his return from
injury, skipper Tyson Shea was his usual effi cient
self and Declan Phyland and Charlton Butt were
also amongst the Cobras’ best.
BFNL Season Launch Review
THE Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football & Netball
League held it’s annual Season Launch on the eve
of the fi rst bounce and whistle for the season last
Friday night at Maddingley Park, Bacchus Marsh.
Sponsored by Telstra Countrywide, the night offered
both Season Launch guests and the Bacchus
Marsh public the chance to see what a home
powered by the new National Broadband Network
through Telstra’s innovative on-line products would
look like, as well as meeting Telstra ambassador
and Collingwood cult hero Dale Thomas whilst
Auskick exhibition games were being played by the
Darley Junior Football Club.
Thomas and Telstra Countrywide Area Manager
Bill Mundy later addressed the crowd of BFNL club
representatives, board members, staff, sponsors
and invited dignitaries, chatting both about the
benefi ts of Telstra’s connection to the NBN as well
as some footy talk ahead of Thomas’s fi rst game for
the season.
The keynote speaker on the night was Thomas’s
team-mate, and Collingwood premiership captain
Nick Maxwell, who gave an enthralling talk on
his early football career and the obstacles he
faced in reaching AFL ranks, and also answered
questions from the one hundred strong audience in
attendance on the night.
The North Melbourne football club were also
represented on the night through current rookielisted
player Cam Richardson, a former North
Ballarat City junior, and Performance Analyst
Manager Jason Lappin, who was interviewed by
BFNL Media, Marketing & Events Manager Shaun
Kelly to commence the evening.
In his role as master of ceremonies for the night,
Kelly also conducted interviews with several BFNL
football and netball coaches. First-year senior
coaches Doug Hawkins (Bacchus Marsh) and
Matthew Sutton (Melton South) previewed their
season and their Season Opener clash held on the
next night, and Lake Wendouree’s Gavin Webb also
gave the audience an insight into how the Lakers
will fare in season 2013.
On the netball side of things, new Sebastopol coach
Georgia Cann spoke passionately about wanting to
turn around the fortunes of the Burras, as well as the
BFNL’s Central Highlands Regional State Leaguewinning
Open netball team of which she was an
integral part. Lake Wendouree coach Sally McLean
also spoke about the new challenges the Lakers
face this year after turning over half of their A Grade
list over the summer.
Maureen Tayler, the Managing Director of BFNL
Naming Rights Partner Red Onion Creative, AFL
Victoria Chief Operating Offi cer Steven Reaper and
the Honorable Catherine King, Ballarat’s Member of
Parliament and a Gillard government Minister, also
addressed the audience on the night.
The Bacchus Marsh FNC played a big part in the
success of the night, and Bacchus Marsh FNC
president Pat Mullen and his team are owed a great
deal of thanks for their role in hosting the evening
and ensuring guests were well fed and watered.
THIS weekend marks the fi rst WorkSafe Game
of the Month for season 2013.
To kick off the 10th year that these wonderful
events have been held, Essendon legend
Daniher and Hawthorn champion Peter
Knights will alternate as the guest speakers
Daniher played 313 games of VFL / AFL
football in a decorated career spanning 16
seasons. The oldest of four brothers to play
for the Bombers, Daniher lead the club to two
premiership in a 5-year stint as captain and
introduced in 2003 and in a highly successful
10-year period they have visited more than
60 football communities around Victoria and
southern NSW, promoting the importance of
workplace safety to all communities.
The events facilitated by AFL Victoria Country
allow WorkSafe to develop better relationships
with local businesses and people, which
provides an avenue to further communicate
their important message to a specifi c
audience.
The games also help increase the exposure
of country football throughout rural and
regional Victoria, and highlight the quality and
excitement that country football provides.
The WorkSafe Game of the Month will visit
every corner of the state this season with
matches scheduled in Bendigo, Geelong,
Jeparit, Alvie, Neerim Neerim South, Picola
BFNL win Regional State League Netball
THE Ballarat FNL are the inaugural Central
Highlands Regional State League netball premiers,
defeating Eureka in the competition’s Grand Final at
Wendouree Netball Centre on Sunday 24th March.
After losing their opening Regional State League
game, the BFNL team didn’t miss a beat from then
on, winning their remaining fi ve home-and-away
games and a semi fi nal against the Maryborough
& Castlemaine District FNL before ending the
Cinderella run of inter-town rivals Eureka with their
convincing 52-31 win in the decider.
The lead-in to the Grand Final wasn’t without it’s
hiccups though, with star defender Erin RIley, who
was named in the RSL All-Star team and shared the
BFNL’s Best & Fairest award for the tournament with
captain Emma Burton, badly injuring her left arm
in a practice match for her club side, Redan, in the
week leading up to the Grand Final.
Riley’s absence forced a re-shuffl e of the line-up
with Lake Wendouree’s Mel Allen, who had seen
most of her Regional State League action in attack,
starting in Riley’s place at goal keeper beside
Lakers team-mates Burton at goal defence and
Molly Boyle at wing defence.
The BFNL side started slowly with Eureka scoring
three of the game’s opening four goals. Despite
only having won one home-and-away game for the
RSL tournament, Eureka had pushed the BFNL in
both of their previous encounters and had produced
the upset of the tournament with their semi-fi nal
win over the highly fancied Wimmera Netball
Association, and, as she commented in the lead-up
to the Grand Final, BFNL coach Kate McMahon
was very much expecting Eureka to come out with a
“nothing to lose” mentality.
“The sheer lack of fear that [Eureka] have I feel
gives them the upper hand and makes them an
extremely dangerous opposition”, McMahon
commented late last week.
She needn’t have worried though, as once her
team settled down, they quickly erased the defi cit
and took complete control of the game. Mel Allen
quickly asserted her authority in the defensive half
and used her height and reach to alter the course of
many of Eureka’s shots on goal, Stacey McCartin,
Molly Boyle and center court player Hollie Frew
worked tirelessly to move the ball down the court
and Georgia Cann and Suzy Dalmau fi nished off
their work.
Cann, in particular, was automatic in front of the
net. She converted all of her sixteen fi rst-half
shots on goal, and it wasn’t until the fi fteen-minute
mark of the third quarter that she missed her fi rst
shot on goal. Cann has been referred to as a “big
game player” throughout the RSL tournament, and
showed exactly why in the Grand Final. Her voice on
court and calm demeanour must be a boost for her
teammates, and both were on display in the Grand
Final.
The BFNL had opened up an eight-goal gap at the
quarter-time break, which had extended to thirteen
goals by half-time. When the BFNL scored the fi rst
three goals of the quarter to double Eureka’s score,
the game was all but over from that point onwards.
The BFNL increased their margin to seventeen
goals at the fi nal break, and fi nished the game with
a twenty-one goal advantage in a dominant display.
McCartin was deservedly awarded the Netball
Victoria Best on Court Medal, although a case for
Cann and Allen’s claims to this medal could also
certainly be argued. Both McCartin and Cann,
along with defenders Emma Burton and Erin Riley,
were named in the RSL All-Star Side, and Burton
and McCartin were fi nalists for the Netball Victoria
RSL Most Valuable Player award, which was won by
Wimmera’s Zoe Heard.
The BFNL team has now earnt the right to compete
in the Premier’s Challenge tournament, a roundrobin
tournament to be held at Melbourne’s State
Netball & Hockey Centre on Sunday 5th May. The
BFNL will play against the winners from the other
Regional State League regions - Eastern, Goulburn/
North East and Western - with the teams placed fi rst
and second to progress to the fi nal, which will be
played at HiSense Arena that night as a prelude to
the ANZ Championship match between Melbourne
Vixens and Central Pulse.
Weekend Netball Review
WHILST it was very much a “soft opening”,
with only six of the eleven teams in action, the
Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball
League opened for 2013 last weekend, and
netball’s fi rst whistle was a sweet sound for all
of those who have put in countless hours over
the off-season to prepare their clubs for this
season. Let’s have a look at how the season
opening round of the Gull and Co. A Grade
Netball competition panned out.
Sunbury 29 lost to Melton 40
The new-look Sunbury team, coached this
season by Kim Bailey, who made her name
in the netball ranks of the Riddell District FNL,
was out-classed in their fi rst game together by
a solid Melton side intent on going one step
further than last season’s Grand Final loss to
Lake Wendouree. The Lions got to within four
goals at the fi nal change after a slow start, but
the class of the Bloods shone through at the
end. Melton’s Brooke Thompson, co-winner
of the 2012 BFNL A Grade Best & Fairest,
and Lauren Burns, who was playing in an
unfamiliar defensive position, stood out - with
Burns in particular earning public praise for
her game in the press throughout the week.
Many Sunbury players had their fi rst taste of
BFNL action, including Rebecca Locker, a
multiple-time Riddell District FNL Team of the
Year defender, and will be, in an old horse
racing parlance, “better for the run” as they
look towards a big game against Darley today.
Melton South 34 lost to Bacchus Marsh 50
An 18 goal to seven third quarter was the key
to victory for Bacchus Marsh in their season
opening game against a gallant Melton South,
after only one goal separated the two sides at
half time. In fact, with 29 goals to 12 overall
after half time, the Cobras quite dominated
the second half of this game. Susan Dalmau,
the 2012 leading goalscorer who has had a
solid off-season preparation with the BFNL’s
premiership winning Central Highlands
Regional State League side, shot 32 of the
Cobras 50 goals from only 36 shots on the
day, and was well supported by centre court
player Olivia Phyland and goal defence Amy
Reynolds. Danielle Robertson and Katrina
Mullumby were amongst Melton South’s best
players, with Monique Clark, who starred for
the BFNL’s 17 and Under side in the Central
Highlands Regional State League competition,
lining up in defence for her fi rst senior game.
Sebastopol 21 lost to Darley 42
As was the habit in the BFNL’s opening
weekend, a blast of third quarter dominance
put this game in the bag - in this case, it
was a thirteen goal to six outburst by Darley
against a Sebastopol team that showed that
the struggles of their past may be well and
truly behind them. Only six goals seperated
the two teams at half time, before the Devils’
strong third quarter set the foundation for their
eventual 21 goal victory. Elyce Carlyle (29
goals) and Sarah Thompson (13 goals) did a
fantastic job of sharing the load in the forward
arc, with Alix Ferri ultra-impressive as well for
the Devils. Former Ballarat Pride captain and
now Sebastopol coach Georgia Cann shot 15
of her side’s 21 goals, and was well supported
by her siste Adrianna in defence and Prue
Scott at wing attack.
This weekend sees an exciting full round of
BFNL netball action, with some of the more
intriguing stories in netball across the offseason
- how will Lake Wendouree cope
with so many losses to their A Grade netball
side from last season, how will Redan cope
defensively with the permanent loss of star
Sally Riley and the temporary loss (through
injury) of rising star Erin Riley, and how
will North Ballarat City cope with their tag
as instant favourites with Stacey and Gina
McCartin joining the side this season?
GO SWANNIES

Lake Wendouree Lakers Notes
Round one in the Ballarat Football has fi nally
come around!!! This weekend we head
to Alfredton Oval to take on the Ballarat
Swans!
After a lot of hard work both on and off
the fi eld to get everyone ready for Round
one a lot of people need to be thanked for
their hard work. From our new President
Dave Clifton and our new committee right
through to our footballers and netballers
and also our junior club who kicked off their
campaign last week and did a great job!
After a long pre-season in both football and
netball all players can’t wait to get out there
and play.
Senior coach Gavin Webb has had the
boys training hard and also 3 good practice
matches.
Senior Netball Coach Sally Mclean has only
had the one major hit out but said the girls
are all raring to go!
After the game we expect all supporter
players and coaches to head into the
Ballarat rooms after the game to have a
drink and mingle with the opposition.
After this we hope again to see Supporters
players and coaches at the “Lake View
Hotel” for a drink and a meal.
Important that everyone at the club to gets
to the Lake view hotel because they have
been a very good loyal sponsor to the Lake
Wendouree Football Netball Club and this is
a good way for us to say thanks.
Good luck to everyone this week and GO
LAKERS!!!
RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Bacchus Marsh Cobra Chatter
Last Friday night saw the launch of the BFL season at Maddingley Park.
With this came the Telstra Broadband Information truck which enabled
people to view the full potential of the National Broadband Network. Many
thanks to Liz Phyland and her team for the catering and also the junior
members who provided exemplary service to all guests.
Saturday saw us travel down the road to Melton South for our fi rst night
game of the season. Chris Griffi th steered our Under 18’s to a hard fought
win and our boys, led by Ricky Hawkins, were hard at the ball all day. This
year the U18’s are mainly fi rst year players therefore it was pleasing to see
the great leadership from the second year players. We also thank the U16
players who willingly stepped up to help out on the day - Jake Gledhill,
Tyler Munro, Brady Roberts and Jake Snowling. A fantastic win for Chris
and the boys.
Our Reserves Coach Rick Millar had his fi rst problem for the season,
which is a great sign for our club moving forward and that was to choose
from 27 players. The team that took to the fi eld had another tough game
and with the rain it made conditions diffi cult. Rick has in past seasons had
to pull on the socks and be a playing coach so I think he may be enjoying
the side lines and concentrating on his coaching skills. Again it was great
to see the return of some old Cobra players Josh Robson, Kane Mallia
and Scott Christie to name a few. With many players on top of their game
senior selection for some is just around the corner.
Our senior boys showed signs of nerves in the fi rst quarter including the
coach. Adam Skrobalak pulled a hamstring in the minute of the match
which hurt our side and the boys kicking 7 points in the fi rst quarter made
it a rough start, but we started to settle in after that. Great to see Mike
Suban back at the club and Rhys McNay has returned from overseas.
Doug is optimistic following our fi rst hit out and believes this group of
players will develop quickly and be a team that improves fast.
With a later start than normal due to the night footy our netball girls had a
fantastic day winning all four games. The Under 18.5 started the day with
30 | BFNL RECORD 2013
a fantastic fi rst quarter and this set up a great win 24-16 with best players
Gaby Mayne, Jaimee Walsh, and Jaleesa Morris. C Grade continued the
trend with a 31 - 18 win starting the year in great fashion with the skipper
Sarah “Googs” McGuigan showing the way and new players Tricinda
Lonie and Leonie Earl having a great start. B Grade had to struggle early
and Melton South took it right up to the girls but in the second half they
pulled away for a good win 34-21 with new recruit Jacquie McHenry
playing a great game fi rst up with Linda Powell who is back after 12
months in the sun. A Grade had a scratchy start to the season and Melton
South was dominant early and led by two goals at half time. However,
after that, it all started to fl ow back and the girls won 50 - 34 with best
players being Stacey Jeffrey, Liv Phyland, and Jenni Lawford. A big thank
you to Mysie who coached A, B & C’s for the day and Loz who coached
the unders.
This week we take on Sebastopol at home, and with Maddingley Park
in tip top condition after some off season maintenance work, we look
forward to resuming our rivalry with the Burras.
Memberships: Supporters are encouraged to help the club by purchasing
a membership for season 2013. A range of membership options are
available – please refer to our website (www.bmfnc.com.au) for contact
Social News: Meals are available in the clubrooms on Thursday nights –
bar opens at 6:00 pm. All supporters are welcome to attend for a great
meal and a refreshing drink while they listen to team selections.
Our fi rst social function for the year is a Hollywood Cocktail Party
TONIGHT at the clubrooms starting at 7:30 pm.
Other dates to keep in mind: Saturday, June 01: Brendan Fevola playing
for Bacchus Marsh (marquee packages available – for details visit our
Facebook page). Friday, June 14: Mid Year Ball at Shire Hall
Go Cobras!

Sebastopol Burras Bullentin
Today we travel down the highway for the fi rst time this year to
take on Bacchus Marsh, with plenty at stake for all involved it
looks like 3 very tight games of football coming up.
Football: Last week the seniors were over run by a strong
Darley side in the second half and although the gap on the
scoreboard was fairly large there was a lot of positive signs in
the fi rst half to indicate there was better times ahead, Steven
Kellier and Brad Carrigg showed good signs when given the
chance and Ben Trew was good around the forward line as
well.
The seconds played some fantastic football all throughout
the game and were just beaten by 13 points by last years
runners up in a very good effort, some of the better players
James Blackwell, Jacob Branch and Luke Parker doing
themselves no harm by playing well and putting pressure on
players above to perform.
Although undermanned the U18 boys played well throughout
the day with the underlying factor being no interchange
players available to use and tiredness eventually caught
up resulting in a 5 goal loss however with several players
returning this week it looks to be a much stronger outfi t hitting
the fi eld.
Netball: While only the U12s managed to get a win on the
board and all other teams suffering a loss the improvement
is very noticible from the girls, all teams proved to be very
competitive throughout and with a few key players returning
this week it is only a matter of time before the girls start
posting some good wins in the future.
Socially: What a great day and night off the fi eld for the Burra,
With a double header against Darly being played, the kids
had the opportunity to venture over between the 2 grounds
and either jump in the jumping castle, climb the rock wall or
get their faces painted, all of this provided by the club and
the smiles from both the Sebas and Darley kids showed
that a great family day was had by all, many thanks to all the
people involved to make the event a success.
So after the great day the season launch got under way at
the club rooms with a bucking bull being set up and many
families coming along to continue the enjoyment, with around
100 people taking the chance to ride the bull there were
plenty of laughs and spills for all, the highlight of the night
being Nick Owens ride which resulted in a trophy for his
effort.
After today’s games please make sure that you drop in to
Battlers Tavern on the way home for a quick drink or some
food at the bistro and support those who support us.
Finally we welcome some of our other sponsors in 2013,
Whiltshire Takeaway, Doherty And Clark Tyres, Whitfords
Waste Management and Hydrautech and thank them for their
continuing support. “Go Burra”
Redan Lion’s Den
Welcome back to everyone involved or
supporters of the L+H lions.
Today we take on Melton South under the
they will be turning up expecting to win.
Sunbury will be the hunted but rest assured
the packs will be out sniffi ng out trail as well.
The Senior footy and netball along with junior
footy, netball and girls footy are looking in
great shape to take the new season on.
Massive thanks to all the present, past and
new volunteers, without them the club cannot
function.
After the game we extend our invitation to all
at today’s game to wander into the Den for
some Redan hospitality. At around 6 we will
stroll across to Saxon House for some fi nger
how the day panned out.
Melton South Panther Proffering
Well it was a big night at the den last Saturday
with a big gate for the eastern block clash against
Bacchus Marsh. Whilst only managing one win for
the night, there were many pleasing signs across all
grades of football and netball. In the senior football,
our boys managed to get the chocolates but it may
have been a different story if the Marsh were able
to kick straight early, but bad kicking is bad football
and our boys were able to take advantage. The new
cockroach was able to snag 4 as was Rex Hickman,
which was great to see after a bad injury last year.
Micky Callus was a busy bee around the packs and
was our best player, with Doug Thomas and new
boy, Dion Lawson, also gaining many possessions.
In the 2’s, unfortunately our boys were outclassed,
but with a lot of new players, this was not entirely
unexpected. What was great to see was the better
players were Boofa Hibbert, Joel Hume and
Brendan Hooper. Exactly what is expected from
blokes who have played a lot of senior football is
to see them be the better players in the 2’s and I
am sure Sutts will be looking hard at selection this
week.
The Under 18’s had a lot of players up from
Under 16’s and in a super game of footy, just
went down. 2 goals each from Joel Rattya
and Jai Carlin and better players being Daniel
Leggett and the sons of ex Melton South legends
(just ask Adam and Ty!) Oscar Hall and Jake
Charge doing well.
Our netball girls were not able to win any games,
however much more competitive efforts were
shown across all grades and given a few weeks
to gel and gain a few extra players, we will see
some wins soon. Danielle Robertson shot well
for both senior and reserve sides, as did Stacey
Holmquest in the reserves. Danielle Minihan was
the main focal point for the C grade and Maria
Tahi in the unders also had good games.
This week against Redan our supporters expect
nothing less than a supreme effort across all
grades. We travel up the highway with great
anticipation and a real confidence that with
great effort will come great reward…go get em’
RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
North Ballarat City
Welcome to season 2013. A special welcome
to our new coaches in the netball and
football.
Ballarat Netball legend Annie McCartin and
her three daughters have decided to join
Simon at the club in 2013. Annie will coach
the A grade and Under 18.5 while Dayle
Berry will coach the B grade and Steve Crane
returns to coach the C Grade. A special
welcome to all new netball players for the
2013 season.
We also welcome back Lorna, Anne,
Margaret and all the ladies to assist in the
canteen during 2013
On the football side, Rob Waters returns to
coach the seniors, Paul ‘Kanga’ Kennedy
moves up to the reserves while BFL legend
Carl Symons will coach the under 18.5 team.
We once again welcome back our long
40 | BFNL RECORD 2013
time naming rights sponsor, Peaches Fruit
Markets who have moved to 12 Coronet St
Wendouree. We also acknowledge and thank
our new sponsor, Hip Pocket Workwear who
are also our new suppliers of club apparel.
The season launch was a huge success
last week at St Pat’s College. The number of
people who attended was unexpected. This
even seems to get bigger every year. We
thank Nathan Thompson for making extra
time to call in and speak to us as well as
Leigh Ryan of Power FM for being the MC for
the night.
Today we welcome East Point to kick off
round 1. We were beaten by the EP’s last year
and need to make sure it doesn’t happen
again.
Members and their guests are welcome in the
North Sports Club during and after the game.
To night we come up against North City
in both Football and Netball.
With a bit of luck the Rooboys and
Roogirls will come away with good wins.
Thursday Night Teas are back and we
look forward to catching up with you all
form 6.00pm at the East Point Social
Sunbury Lions Den
Tonight we welcome Darley to Clarke
oval,going on previous encounters this
should be a close game.
Congratulations to Scott Lobb who plays
his 200th senior game tonight a fantastic
effort from the pasty one!
Last week against Melton we had some
mixed results with the under 18’s just
hanging in a close game they reserves
getting defeated and the seniors
recording a big win only after a sluggish
start, it’s a long season and plenty of
improvement to come from all sides.
It was not a good start to the netball either
with all sides tasting defeat, thanks to
all the new under 18 players that helped
out hope you can stick around and enjoy
some netball.
Darley Devils Diary
Thanks to all suporters and members
Round one.
It was fantastic to see a lot of the junior
around to
support senior grades and vice versa.
Congratulations to all of our DFNC
teams on their efforts in winning all
grades - a great start to the year, let’s
maintain our momentum going forward.
We travel away again this week to our
old arch rivals in Sunbury.
Let’s all get there and show our unifi ed
support once again and head into their
rooms after the game.
The DFNC would like to invite all general
members of the public to our Round 3
clash against Bacchus Marsh at Darley
Park
on April the 27th for the Wheelahan /
Light Memorial Shield. Our most valued
sponsors will be treated to a luncheon
and a guest speaker.
There will be jumping castles for the
kid’s, an appearance by the new CTCS
Densley the Devil Mascot, Raffl es, and
much more.
Be there for what promises to be a great
day.
Last but not least a big congrats
to Skinny Mac who has apparantly
announced his engagement.
Well done Skinny - about time.
BFUA Report Liam Brady
LAST weekend the BFUA moved into the
opening round of the season which saw umpire
appointments for senior leagues and junior
competitions around the region.
Well done to all clubs and umpires on what was a
great weekend of football action right across the
region. Last weekend saw many umpires represent
the BFUA for the very fi rst time, whether that be as
a fi eld, boundary or goal umpire. Well done to these
umpires and all the very best in the weeks ahead!
The Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA)
has a new look coaching staff for 2013. The Senior
Field Umpire coaches are Simon Harrison and Rick
McCluskey, the Boundary Umpire coach is Brian
Ryan, the Goal Umpire coach is Rhys Brehaut and
Phil McGrath is the Junior Development coach. All
coaches have been putting in plenty of hard work
in the lead up to the season to insure all umpires
are ready to perform well in the opening rounds.
Our newly appointed Field Umpire Coach Simon
Harrison joins the BFUA with a wealth of umpiring
experience. Simon has previously worked with AFL/
FOOTBALL
SPECIALISTS
NSW and has a long history of working with elite
and up and coming umpires. Simon will be a terrifi c
acquisition for the group and has already had a
profound impact in the short time that he has been
in his new role.
It is still only very early in the season and the BFUA
are always encouraging any new and old members
to become involved in the Association.
If you are interested in getting involved, please
don’t hesitate to contact Liam Brady at the Ballarat
Football Umpires Association on 53 331 977 or
simply come down to training at the City Oval on a
Wednesday night. Training commences at 6:00pm.
If you are from outside the Ballarat region, please
contact Liam to obtain correct venue and training
start times.
All relevant information regarding the BFUA is on
the BFUA website. Please go to
BFLNA Netball Report BFNL Netball Manager Kara Murray
WE’VE now kicked off the 2013 Ballarat FNL netball
season, and wasn’t it a big relief to hear the opening
whistle of the season last weekend signalling an end to all
of the hard work our clubs have done over the off-season?!
For those who didn’t read this column last week and
missed my initial column, my name is Kara Murray and
I started as the BFLNA, BFNLNA and MCDFNL Netball
Manager in early February, 2013. I have been involved
in Netball both playing (including a small junior stint in
Ballarat) and coaching for the past 30 years and have
worked professionally in sports administration over the past
15 years.
In March 2013 Netball Victoria selected the BFLNA as an
early adopter league for the My Netball IT system. We are
one of only 20 Association/Leagues trialling the system
before it’s nation wide roll out in 2014. It will be a great time
saving tool for all the netball volunteers, superseding many
streams of paperwork and enabling the clubs to keep
thorough statistical records and data.
The Senior Interleague schedule for 2013 has the BFLNA
playing Bendigo FL in Ballarat on Saturday, May 25th and
the RDFNL on Wednesday, May 15th in Sunbury. This year
we will also have junior Interleague scheduled for June
15th , Goldfi elds Trophy against BendigoFL in Ballarat and
the Bob Davis Trophy against Football Netball Geelong in
Geelong. It’s an exciting time for our juniors with their fi rst
chance to play representative netball for the BFLNA. Club
nominations are currently being collated and selections
and training will begin in the coming weeks.
We are currently seeking an expression of interest for
Interleague Netball Coaches and Team Managers for our
2013 BFNL Junior Interleague campaign.
Our 2013 Interleague tournaments are scheduled for the
following dates;
Saturday 15th June - Best Employment Goldfi elds Trophy v
Bendigo JFL at Ballarat, Venue TBC
Saturday 6th July - Bob Davis Trophy v Geelong JFL in
Geelong, Venue TBC
Our age groups for Junior interleague this year have
changed and will now align with the Netball Victoria Talent
ID and our competing leagues age groups.
15&Under - Eligibility DOB born after 1/1/1998
13&Under - Eligibility DOB born after 1/1/2000
11&Under - Eligibility DOB born after 1/1/2002
As this is our fi rst year in the Junior Netball Interleague
structure we require interested coaches to have at least
2 years junior coaching experience, hold a current
foundation coaching accreditation and have a strong
understanding and passion to develop the Junior Netball
competition within the Ballarat FNL.
These teams will also have the opportunity to enter into
association tournaments if availability in dates and fi xturing
is there.
To all Clubs, please remember that nominations for players
are due by 29th April, 2013 and please adhere to these
new age groups.
We look forward to a wonderful experience for all the staff
and players in our fi rst year of Junior Netball Interleague!
Representative Netball Coaching Positions
The Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League
are seeking applications for the following coaching positions.
The Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball league invite suitably qualifi ed people that hold current coaching
accreditations, with a minimum of 2 years junior coaching experience, and a passion for junior netball development
within the BFNL competition. If you are interested in applying for any of these positions please contact the BFNL
Netball Manager Kara Murray on kara@ballaratfl .com.au or 0417 642 271 for further information.
Note: These appointments will be for a term of 1 year and all interleague coaching positions will be assessed at the
completion of the 2013 season.
In 2013 the Red Onion Creative BFNL Junior Netball representative sides will compete in the AFL Victoria Country
