Well done to Junior Interleague Sides!
Well done to all involved in the BFNL
Junior Interleague sides that played
the Bendigo JFL last Saturday for
the BEST Community Development
Goldfields Trophy at Eureka Stadium.
Our Junior Netballers also took
part in the day for the first time this
year taking on the Gisborne Netball
Association in three grades of netball.
The Ballarat FL were fortunate enough
to win back the trophy we lost last
year to Bendigo after winning five out
of the six games played for the day.
The BFNL only dropped the Under
12 game against very impressive
Bendigo JFL side, but had great wins
in all other games. Our Under 16 boys
capped off a successful day with
victory in the last game of the day by 7
goals and our Youth Girls side started
the day with a convincing victory whilst
keeping Bendigo scoreless.
The standard of football and talent on
display was exceptional, and it was a
privilege for all who attended to see
the manner in which players in all
football and netball sides approached
the games and their enthusiasm and
pride in representing the Ballarat
FNL! The BFNL Junior program is
recognized as the best in AFL Victoria
Country, and the format also provides
a great opportunity for talent scouts to
identify those who may be fast tracked
into the elite pathway programs,
and some of the names that have
previously played for the Ballarat
Football League in recent years and
have gone onto play AFL football from
the Goldfield Trophy are:
• Mark Orchard (Collingwood / Sydney)
• Chris Grant (Western Bulldogs)
• Paul Hills (Essendon)
• James Walker (Fremantle)
• Drew Petrie (Kangaroos)
• Tristan Cartledge (Essendon/Richmond)
• Stephen Owen (Geelong)
• Nathan Brown (Collingwood)
• James Frawley (Melbourne)
• Mitchell Brown (West Coast)
• Shaun Grigg (Carlton)
• Andrew Hooper (Western Bulldogs)
• Brad Crouch (Adelaide)
Thanks to all Coaches – Tom Bourke-
Finn, Peter Dickson, Chris Stuhldreier,
Shane Darroch, John Ferguson,
and also to our Youth Girls Coach
Tim Shearer. To Kelly Amoore, Prue
Douglass and Natalie Stryker, thanks
also for your contribution as the first
ever coaches of our Junior Interleague
netball sides. Well done also to Kara
Murray for all the hard work you put in
to get these games up and running.
Thanks also to the Assistant Coaches,
the BFNL Directors and all who
to the event. Most importantly, thanks
to all the players who represented
the BFNL so proudly last Saturday in
the BEST Community Development
BFnL Round 8 Football Review
ONLY four games featured on the Ballarat FNL’s
radar in Round 7, with Sunbury and Bacchus
Marsh enjoying the benefits of having played
in the BFNL’s Season Opener round at the
beginning of the season, however each of the
four matches played held an interest this past
weekend, with arguably the upset of the season,
a club continuing to shout their authenticity to
all willing to listen, some straight kicking finally
helping a finals fancy and a side tuning up for the
biggest match of the season.
Redan continued to sprout their bonafides
to anyone willing to listen this past weekend,
travelling out to Alfredton Oval and defeating
Ballarat by 53 points. Seven second-quarter
goals helped the Lions establish a matchwinning
break by half-time, which they continued
to increase as the game went on. Youngster
Mitch Phelps celebrated his selection in the
Victoria Country Under 19 training squad with a
seven-goal, best on ground performance, with
midfield mates Brendan Peace, Ryan Waight and
Jarrett Giampaolo all earning praise from coach
Eamonn Gill. Sam Caldow, Daniel Kennedy
and Mitch Rodd were the Swans’ best few, with
James Quayle booting three goals for a Swans
side that were competitive for most of the day,
which will give them a degree of confidence
when these two sides meet again in Round 14.
Darley finally overcame the goalkicking “yips”
that have plagued them thus far in season 2013
to distance themselves from Melton in the final
quarter of their clash at Darley Park last Saturday,
with the Devils piling on eight last-quarter goals
to consolidate their top-six place with a 65
point win. Nathan Jackel and Shane Page both
continue to impress for Darley this season, again
named amongst the Devils better few players,
with Jake Edwards booting four goals on a day
where the Devils made good with seventeen of
their twenty-three shots at goal. Skipper Jake
Gleeson was again the Bloods’ standout, with
Daniel Walker, Darren Haby and John Prudek
also amongst Melton’s better few.
North Ballarat City, as expected, recorded a
handsome win over Sebastopol, but some credit
must go to the Burras who were able to hit the
scoreboard in every quarter and hold North City
to their second-lowest goals total in a single
2013 match. Having said that, North City weren’t
troubled throughout the game, increasing their
lead at every break on their way to a 78 point
victory that saw them move to the top of the
BFNL ladder for the first time this season. Derick
Micallef continued his outstanding season in front
of goal for North City with another five-goal haul,
taking him to second place in the Tony Lockett
Medal, six goals behind East Point coach Dan
Jordan, with Ryan Luke’s stellar 2013 continuing
and Jason McNamara approaching the form that
saw him win the past two Henderson Medals.
Sebastopol’s Sam Jenkins caught the eye for the
Burras, earning him this week’s Republic Player
of the Week nomination, with Stephen Keiller,
Daniel Baxter and Jacob Branch other Burras
who could hold their heads high.
The final match of the round, a rare BFNL Sunday
fixture, produced arguably one of the upsets of
the season, as Lake Wendouree produced their
best game for the 2013 season to put a dent
in Melton South’s finals aspirations courtesy
of a 50 point win, fueled largely by the Lakers
booting the only six goals of the final quarter.
Ash Simpson surely won’t get overlooked by the
North Ballarat Roosters for a second successive
week after a sterling performance for the Lakers
last weekend, with Angus Kirby doing a fantastic
job holding Melton South coach Mathew Sutton
to just two goals for the day, and the everreliable
Matthew Tuminello and Scott Carey also
impressing for the green and gold. Doug Thomas
was dominant in the midfield for the Panthers, as
was Vic Country squad member Leigh Burke in
the defensive half of the ground on a day when
winners were few and far between for Melton
South.
This sets up a cracking Round 9 of BFNL action
today, with arguably the game of the year at
Sunbury’s Clarke Oval as the reigning premiers
take on North Ballarat City in a game that will go
a long way towards the mid-season premiership
favourites in the Red Onion Creative Ballarat
Football Netball League.
BFnL Round 8 netball Review
DESPiTE only eight of the eleven sides in the Gull
& Company BFNL A Grade Netball competition
taking to the court last weekend, Round 7 still
promises to have a huge bearing on the way that
the 2013 season will pan out, given some of the
results recorded over the weekend...especially
from a couple of teams that many were hoping
would find themselves a more permanent home
in the ladder’s lower rungs given their history of
performances at the business end of the season!
One of these teams, Redan, is starting to regain
their mojo after a slow start to the season,
moving into the top six thanks to a 42-26 win
over Ballarat at Alfredton Oval. After a slow start
cost them dearly against Melton in their previous
game, Redan flew out of the blocks against the
Swans last weekend, flying out to a ten-goal
lead by quarter time and increasing their lead at
every break for the rest of the game. The Lions
received great service from co-coach Cass
Hobbs and impressive youngsters Ruby Parry
and Narelle Perkins - all of whom represented
the Ballarat FNL in Senior Interleague netball this
season. Ballarat, who have the bye today and
who are still searching for their first win of the
season, named Lou Conway, Kayla Wilson and
Kate Baldwin as their better performers against
the Lions.
Melton continued on their winning ways last
weekend, defeating Darley 51-25 and knocking
the Devils out of the top six in the process.
Melissa McCauley was in sparkling form in front
of the ring, scoring 46 of the Bloods’ 51 goals
for the day, with Brooke Gleeson and Jessica
Bartlett starring for Melton. Darley’s better
players were defenders Brianna Rizzato and
Olivia Aughton, with Brownyn Coffey scoring 17
of Darley’s 25 goals.
North Ballarat City kept their winning streak alive
in impressive fashion last weekend, with an 80-
40 win over Sebastopol. Jordyn Bibby and Gina
McCartin were ultra-impressive in the front court
for North City, combining for all 80 of North City’s
goals, with Stacey McCartin her usual busy self.
Sebastopol were far from disgraced, with coach
Georgia Cann and Amy Marie combining well
in the shooters arc, and skipper Cindy May and
Prue Scott working hard all day.
The final match of the round sounded a rather
ominous warning for the rest of the competition,
with Lake Wendouree defeating Melton South
46-33 to start knocking loudly on the door of the
top six. The Lakers’ second quarter helped to
shake off a Panthers side determined to notch
their first victory of the season (after starting with
three draws in their first four matches), building
their lead at each of the breaks from then on.
Experienced trio Kara Hart, Mel Allen and
captain Emma Burton led from the front for the
Lakers, with Danielle Robertson, Monique Clark
and Scarlett Trewavis were amongst the best for
Melton South.
Lake Wendouree travel to Darley in a crucial
match for both teams, who sit percentage
outside the top six. With the Lakers’ recent
resurgance, I’m tipping them in a close one.
East Point welcome Melton to the Eastern Oval
in what promises to be one of the matches of
the season. Whilst the Roos are in form at the
moment, so are the Bloods, who will prevail...but
only just.
Melton South host Sebastopol in another game
that’s extremely tough to tip! The Panthers will
see this as their best opportunity to open their
account for the season, however the Burras have
been in good form in recent weeks and will get
up in another extremely close game.
Redan take on Bacchus Marsh at City Oval, and
without the recently-retired Susan Dalmau at GS
for the Cobras, I struggle to see who will play
in goal for them, especially with Erin Riley back
up and running in defence for Redan. Lions for
mine.
Sunbury take on North Ballarat City in what’s
going to be another of the matches of the season
today. Lions coach Kim Bailey has set her
charges for this game and they’re a huge chance
of inflicting North City’s first loss for the season,
but with the class that North City have shown this
season, I’m loath to tip against them.
Message from Worksafe aFL Victoria Country
V/Line Umpire Academy Program
Every weekend at country grounds across Victoria,
the men and women with whistles and flags in hand
play a pivotal role in making local football what it is.
Ensuring the development of the next generation
of umpires is, at the very heart of keeping country
football the great social and community event it is
for everyone involved, from players, officials and of
course the spectators.
Because of the key role umpires play, each
year WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s Umpiring
Department invites a group of talented whistle
blowers to participate in the V/Line Umpire Academy
Program.
Invitations are sent to young developing field,
boundary and goal umpires to participate in Junior
Football Programs, as well to more experienced
umpires from local associations that are then
considered for selection in a wide-range of umpiring
appointments.
in 2013 the V/Line Umpire Academies are located at
• Camperdown / Terang
• Ballarat / Geelong
• Morwell / Churchill
• Berwick / Dandenong
• Albury / Wangaratta
• Shepparton / Echuca
• Horsham
• Bendigo
• Mildura
The location for each academy was determined
in the latter part of last year and at pre-Christmas
sessions, summer training programs are distributed
to the new members and the current fitness levels
are determined.
Post-Christmas – usually in mid-February – the
Academy Program resumes with fitness levels of all
participants measured once again.
Coaching sessions at the Academy sessions include
on-track coaching with discipline-specific coaching
groups and also indoor-coaching sessions that
range from umpiring philosophies, personal goalsetting,
the completion of self-development plans
and an outline of what the year ahead will include.
Active participants of the AFL National Umpire-
Coach Professional Development Program play
an important role in the delivery of the Academy
sessions and conduct skill-based coaching
sessions where the participants are exposed to
‘a different voice’ where the expectations of the
performances are extremely high.
This year members of the Academy have thrived
in the opportunities the program offers, with all
umpiring appointments for the 2013 V/Line Cup
(U15 country representative carnival) and AFL
Victoria’s 2013 U16 Championships being active
participants in the V/Line Umpire Academy
Program.
The Academy Program also proved 230 of the
248 umpires for last month’s WorkSafe Country
Championships.
In addition to these achievements, 12 umpires have
been invited to umpire at the three WorkSafe AFL
Victoria Country versus Victorian Amateur Football
Association games on Sunday July 7.
For anyone who is interested in learning more about
the V/Line Umpire Academy Program, please visit
I would have to say I don’t really have any match day
darley devils diary
In opening, the DFNC would like to take the
opportunity in thanking the many volunteers that
make our club viable to compete on a week by
week basis. There are too many specific people to
mention, but to all the volunteers, a massive thanks
for your relentless hard work and dedication. So
thank you again to the people who “choose!” to
help.
We welcome the Lakers today for our Round 9
clash. May all competing teams play with the
passion and desire we expect and may the best
teams win. Our senior guy’s journey continues
to improve, with much more hard work to be
done. This is the time of year (as a club) to show
continuity in our training, so let’s take the roads
less travelled.
Thank you to the many people who made the effort
to dress up at our Hollywood night, especially
those who managed to stay in character for the
majority of the night. Cashy was a little too scary
for my liking and Boof managed to keep his baby
quiet for the entire evening. Minya may have a
26 | BFnL ReCoRd 2013
career after footy, but it would be remiss of me
not to mention the so called miss match that was
presented on the dance floor. Balls, you held your
own for almost 10 seconds, dance floor… not
enough steps, footy oval….too many. Sorry mate,
chin up, tough day.
Remember if anyone is interested in club clothing
(jackets and hoodies), please contact Digger
through the football club. Can I also remind people
about the mid-year ball on Friday July 19th,
our ticket sales are booming so don’t miss the
opportunity! Tickets can be purchased from Robyn
Bewley, Nicole Verbeek, Matt Colley or Kristy
Wright.
Finally, the committee would like to make special
mention to one of their own - Digger Edwards.
Digger was nominated to represent the DFNC in
the Ballarat Goldfields Spelling Bee Competition
and has made his way straight to the finals. No one
is more amazed than us and we wish him all the
best in the coming weeks.

Lake Wendouree Lakers notes
After a wet week in Ballarat the Sectrol Security Lakers
came up against Melton South on a heavy Harcourts
Oval. The under 18’s again showed much improvement
against a team that is firmly in the top 5. The boys need
to keep persevering and get along to training with Gav
and success is just around the corner. A narrow loss
with best players Biscuits, Jack Salau and Matty Maher.
The Magoos broke their drought and had a thumping
win running all over Melton South to have a great 11
goal win with Danny Grey BOG again with Ringo and
Hugh with 5 goals in the best but a great team effort.
The one’s also had a fantastic win finishing with a great
last quarter kicking 6 goals into the breeze to win by 8.
It was easily our best 4 quarter effort for the year and
it was great to see so many young guns in the best
including Simmo, Gus and Linc, also the wise ones such
as Tumma and Moth leading the way.
Congratulations to the netball girls who won 4 from 4
against Melton Sth. The under 18s started the day well
with a 29 goal win and securing their highest score
of the season. C grade were also strong performers
winning 30 – 19. B grade showed that their dedication
to training and Romseys coaching expertise are paying
off, also registering their highest score for the season
with 50 goals and a decisive win. The A grade girls
started strongly in attack and finished strongly in
defence with a 46 – 33 win. We will be looking for
greater consistency over the next few weeks when we
play teams that are above us on the ladder. Big thanks
to umpires Emily Atkins, Judy Parker & Claire Hughes
who filled in at late notice for regular umpires Emily
Vallance and Karen Beaston who were unavailable on
Sunday. Also thanks to everyone for working on the
canteen it was good to be able to give Cathy and Mary
a well deserved break.
This week we travel down to Darley were the
conditions will be better and we will all need to be on
our games. After the game all players are expected to
have a drink with the hosts. This week its the Lakers
turn to call into the Leagues Club, they are a major
sponsor and supporter of the club and football in
general in Ballarat so it is an expectation that all will
pop in for a drink with finger food supplied, we will do
presentations there as well. Players and supporters
can also have a meal in the bistro if they like. Its
important we get good numbers there. Go Lakers!
Melton Bloods Banter
It is always a pleasure to travel the short distance
up the road to Darley and last week was no
exception. Fortunately the rain held off and the
ground was in great condition. On the football side
of things we had two good wins with the Under
18.5 and Reserves leading the way. The Seniors
got off to a good start but fell away in the end to
record their 7’th loss for the season. On the netball
courts the Wiltrans girls we took 3 wins and a draw
in the Under 18.5.
This week we are on the road again to the
picturesque Eastern Oval to take on East Point.
We are certainly expecting keen competition in all
grades. With the good form being shown by the
Netballers and improvements in the football sides
we expect some good results this week.
Last Saturday we held our Goods and Services
Auction which raised some much needed cash
for the Club. Thanks to our generous supporters
and sponsors who donated goods. Thanks to our
intrepid auctioneer, Brian Payne, from Stockdale
and Leggo who conducted a very professional
auction as always. Thanks also to the organisers
behind the scenes who make this night work.
Does anyone really know how much work goes
into preparing the booklets for instance or the
invoicing and recording spreadsheet? Thanks also
to the members and supporters who turned up.
As always, attendance could have been better
and many items were either passed in or went
very cheaply. Could all supporters who purchased
goods to please pay for them and collect them as
quickly as possible. If not paid for and collected
you may find the items will be resold.
This yet one more reminder for all members to
book their tables for the mid- year ball. Places are
going fast and if you have not booked and paid
you won’t have a spot. See Kate or Lisa as soon as
possible.
Sponsors of the week are Jon Kay Agricultural
Services and Satelite City Furnishings. As usual we
ask you to support these local businesses as they
support your club
Melton South Panther Proffering
Well another trip up the highway led to pretty
similar results for us last week. We just don’t
seem to like going to the Goldfields area at the
moment.
In the ‘Build It Learning’ football it was not
the result we were after. Down all day and
unfortunately unable to get into the contest,
it wasn’t a great day. It was great to see club
leaders do all they could, with Leigh Burke and
Doug Thomas the better players.
In the two’s, the youth policy seems to be
working well, with Benjamin Button (aka Shane
Geddes) being in the best players! Unfortunately
the two’s were unable to get in the game and
went down by 70 points. Joel Hume may get
a senior recall with a good game and Michael
Richards also played well.
The Unders were the only winners for the day,
with bad kicking stopping them winning by a
greater margin. The 16 point win was good, but
34 | BFnL ReCoRd 2013
6 – 16 isn’t the greatest goal kicking. Coach
Scott may get the boys in front of the sticks this
week.
Our ‘Cables Plus’ netballers didn’t fair that well
against an always powerful lake Wendouree
line up. Defeats across all grades, but again,
competitive performances which will be pleasing
to the coaches. Better players on the day
were Danielle Robertson (A Grade), Monique
Robertson (B Grade), Allira Westerland (C
Grade) and Maria Tahi (Unders).
Just a reminder that next week is the 40th
Anniversary Dinner/ Hall of Fame induction
Night. This is one of the biggest nights in the
clubs history where we celebrate the past and
look forward to the future. A must go to event for
all involved with the Panthers. See Teegan Laffin
if you want a ticket ASAP…..it is next weekend.
And as always, remember the best team on the
ground is ours….Go South!!!

Sebastopol Burras Bullentin
This week we travel down to Melton
South and look forward to the
matches against the panthers, after
last weeks improved performance
against North, the players showed
a decent amount of endevour and
effort against a very good team and
look forward to this trend continuing
for the remainder of the season,
again Steve Kelleir showed the way
and many players played there
best football for the year so far,
the seconds continue to improve
and pushed North right till the end,
better players were Adam Wright,
Matt Coleman, Benny Townsend
and Dan Mauric, with the next few
games vital the players are keen
to show they are right amongst the
mix. The U18 again played some
good football and several players
have presented their names for
stepping up for senior selection
over the next few weeks, Ben Silvy,
Tim Stubbs, the Edwards boys and
Brandon Dummett are playing some
great footy along with Jacob Eyres.
Don’t forget to get over and give our
netballers a cheer as they to have
displayed a great improvement this
year. GO BURRA!
Redan Lion’s den
Today we welcome Bacchus Marsh to Mars City Oval
who are coming back from a week off and they will
be out to cause an upset today. We must make sure
they don’t.
Last week saw the Seniors record a good win over
Ballarat. After an even 1st quarter we were able to
break away in the 2nd quarter to open a handy break
at ½ time. We were able to build on that throughout
the 2nd half to record a good win. Up forward
Mitchell Phelps had a good day kicking 7 goals for
the day, but he was well supported by everyone
further up the ground.
The Reserves scored a good win in their game last
week. After an even 1st quarter we were able to
kick 4 goals to nil to open a handy ½ time lead. The
2nd half saw the defence get well on top, restricting
Ballarat to 1 goal for the 2nd half and we managed to
kick 7 goals in the last quarter for the great win. We
must be able to maintain that effort again today if we
are to defeat the improving Bacchus Marsh team.
The U/18.5’s also had a good win last week. There
was very little between the teams up until ¾ time
40 | BFnL ReCoRd 2013
with the scores tied up at this point. A 6 goal to nil
last quarter saw them record the good win to remain
undefeated. We will need to improve that effort today
if we are to defeat the Bacchus Marsh team.
The Netballers had a mixed bag of results last week
with the Seniors and B grade girls recording good
wins while the C grade and U/18.5’s suffered losses.
Today we should again see 4 close games of Netball
as Bacchus Marsh have also shown some good form
in their games throughout the season.
We have a Trots Night coming up on July 24th.
We would like to thank the following Sponsors for
their support this season;
Lawrence and Hanson, GJ Gardner homes, Liberty
Financial, Western Hotel, Lake View Hotel, Prime TV,
Bunch of Grapes Hotel, FW Barnes & Son Funeral
Directors, Ballarat and District Trotting Club, City Oval
Restaurant Bar Cafe, Sportsbiz, Forty Winks, Ballarat
Holden, Bakers Delight Bakery Hill, Porter Plant,
Oscars Hotel, Bunnings Warehouse, Remingtons
insurance Brokers, M Q Tilers, J C Cutbrush & Co &
Stewarts Bakery.

Bacchus Marsh Cobra Chatter
There were no birthday celebrations
for the Senior Cobra’s on the Queen’s
birthday weekend.
Injuries to some key players provided an
opportunity to another two young guys
to play their first senior game. Brenton
Payne and Tristan Simons joined the
seniors and now have experienced the
tempo, pace, and physicality of the
game. Well done boys. Unfortunately our
game lacked energy, we did not apply
the pressure we have been displaying,
and a lot of our disposals missed their
targets. Today we take on Redan who
are the benchmark for the finals so we
should expect a tough game. The boys
have put in a solid week on the track
and we will be up and about.
The Reserves had another good even
performance against Ballarat. A big test
awaits today against undefeated Redan
to really gauge our improvement.
A disappointing result for the U18 boys
after leading for most of the game only
to lose the lead in the last ten minutes.
It was a lesson to be learned for the
boys that a game goes for a complete
4 quarters not 3 ½. Thanks again to the
Bacchus Marsh Juniors for letting seven
U’16 boys play in the U18’s for this
game.
Thanks again to all our volunteers
on game day; we appreciate you
supporting your club.
Go Cobras!
Mcdonald’s Goal
and Mark of the year!
The McDonalds Goal and Mark of the Year is back for another year.
Please remember to nominate anything you see that you think may be spectacular
enough to feature in the best goals or marks of the year.
To nominate, please either email your nomination through to
shaun@ballaratfl.com.au or text it through to 0409 072 403.
An example of a nomination could be:
Lake Wendouree player Liam Brady (No 4) took an excellent mark about 15 minutes
into the third quarter in the forward pocket at the city end.
Sunbury Lions den
This week we welcome North Ballarat City to the Clarke Oval for
north Ballarat City
After a series of home games, we ventured
to Sebastopol last weekend to take on the
Kookaburras. Our games against Sebas are
always hard so we were thrilled that all teams
in football and netball scored good wins. At
last a lot of hard work by many volunteers
over the last 8 years is starting to pay off.
We are always happy to win games but it will
all mean nothing if we can’t continue our form
and compete as well against teams higher
or around us on the ladder. We get that test
today as we travel down to Sunbury to tackle
a very good football and netball club.
We are pleased to report that our first
ever goods and services auction held
at the North Ballarat Social Club was a
resounding success. While there were many
contributors, it would be remiss of us if we
did not acknowledge the fantastic work of
Peter Carey, Gary Olver and David Linane
in making it possible. Of course no auction
will be successful without an auctioneer
and for this we thank Wes Davidson of PDF
Jens Gaunt whose expertise was second
to none. The club is looking to make this an
annual event now and we look forward to all
sections of the club participating.
The annual ball is being held at the Social
Club on 13 July 2013. Tickets are at $40.00
each and will be available soon. On 20
July 2013, we are running a Black and
White Night at the invermay Hall. Tickets
are $50.00 each with drinks supplied for
a limited time on the night. This night is
another fund raiser for all sections of the
club; more information will be given at our
ins and outs dinners in the next couple of
weeks.
DARLEY’S Jake Edwards has regained the lead in The Courier player of the year award, joining Redan’s Grant Bell
