Cumberland Co. records— Deed dated March 27. 1786, * Lowers English Surnames, on the origin of the proper name Smith, says " From whence comes Smith, all be he Knight or Squire. But from the smith, that forget he at the fire." The will of Robert Smith, Sept., 1744, mentions children, Lawrence, Charles. Sarah, Elizabeth, and Dorothy. Lawrence Smith is mentioned, 1738, as a surveyor. John, son of a Lawrence Smith, died leaving a son Lawrence who was of the parish of Abingdon in Gloucester. [Hen.
