enemy abandoned the enterprise if they really entertained the<br />

design.<br />

1816. The Hersey property situated in this town was sold in<br />

compliance with the terms <strong>of</strong> a perraissory act <strong>of</strong> the Legisla-<br />

ture. This property was in 1786 left to the thirteen Congre-<br />

gational Churches in the county by Dr. Abner Hersey for the<br />

purchase <strong>of</strong> religious literature, under the management <strong>of</strong> the<br />

deacons <strong>of</strong> the churches. The property sold comprised some<br />

desirable farming land.<br />

1820. Population <strong>of</strong> the town 3,824.<br />

1821. An almshouse was erected in West <strong>Barnstable</strong> on a farm<br />

some time previously bequeathed to the town for the support<br />

<strong>of</strong> the poor.<br />

1825. The <strong>Barnstable</strong> Gazette and Nautical Intelligencer established<br />

in this town, W. E. P. Rogers, publisher. Sandy<br />

Neck Light- House erected the same year.<br />

1826. An appropriation was made by Congress <strong>of</strong> $10,600 for<br />

the construction <strong>of</strong> a breakwater in Hyannis harbor,<br />

1824. Oct. 2, The Court house, comprising the <strong>of</strong>lSces <strong>of</strong> Reg-<br />

ister <strong>of</strong> Deeds, Register <strong>of</strong> Probate and Clei'k <strong>of</strong> the Courts,<br />

was burned, together with 93 folios <strong>of</strong> deeds and also deeds<br />

left for record, 3fo'.i)s<strong>of</strong> Probate re3ords and the court<br />

records. A new County building was erected in 1828.<br />

1830. Population <strong>of</strong> the town 3,975.<br />

1832. County Court House erected. Samuel P. Croswell <strong>of</strong><br />

Falmouth, Matthew Cobb <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong> and Obed Brooks <strong>of</strong><br />

Harwich, County Commissioners ; J. and A. Taylor <strong>of</strong> Ply-<br />

mouth, contractors.<br />

1839. Sept. 3. Grand celebration <strong>of</strong> the 200th anniversary <strong>of</strong><br />

the settlement <strong>of</strong> the town. Oration by Dr. John G. Palfrev,<br />

dinner speeches by Gov. Edward Everett, Hon. Robert C.<br />

Winthrop, Hon. Wra. Sturgis and others. Brilliant ball in<br />

the evening.
