the village <strong>of</strong> Osterville, Nov. 25, 1819. He graduated at Yale<br />

College iti 1842, and studied law at Cambridge. He was admitted<br />

to the Suffolk bar in 1844, aad entered upon the practice <strong>of</strong> his<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession in Boston, where his abilities were soon recognized.<br />

He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Massachusetts Legislature <strong>of</strong> 1861-2-3;<br />

was a member <strong>of</strong> the National Convention which nominated Abraham<br />

Lincoln for re-election, and supported him with characteristic<br />

ardor. In 1869 he was appointed by Gov. Claflin, a Justice <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Superior Court <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts, in which position he soon acquired<br />

a high reputation, which bid fair to lead to early advancement<br />

in the judiciary. But ill health, in 1872, compelled his resignation,<br />

and a prolonged absence in Europe followed. In 1882<br />

the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Judge <strong>of</strong> Probate and Insolvency was tendered to<br />

him, by Gov. Long, which, owing to the same cause, he felt obliged<br />

to decline. Judge Scudder married, June 30, 1857, Nancy B.<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Charles B. Tobey <strong>of</strong> Nantucket. His summer home<br />

is in Marston's Mills, near the scenes <strong>of</strong> his earlier days.<br />

The brothers <strong>of</strong> the foregoing, were Josiah, merchant, bora<br />

Dec. 3, 1800, died Dec. 29, 1877; Freeman S., merchant, born<br />

March 16, 1805, died Dec. 3, 1852; Edwin, merchant, born Sept.<br />

23, 1815, died May 25, 1872. A sister, Persis, born Aug. 14,<br />

1810, married Joseph W. Crocker, and died April 24, 1844.
