<strong>Barnstable</strong> <strong>families</strong> <strong>of</strong> this name are supposed to have been descendants<br />

<strong>of</strong> John.<br />

Josiah, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>, married Jan. 19, 1688, Elizabeth,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Joseph Warren. His descendants, if any, are not on<br />

record.<br />

Robert, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>, third son <strong>of</strong> John, born 1656, joined<br />

the expedition <strong>of</strong> Wm. Phips, (afterwards Governor <strong>of</strong> Mass..)<br />

against Quebec. This expedition did not reflect much credit<br />

upon the foresight or military skill <strong>of</strong> the commander, and in it<br />

Robert Phinney, like many others, lost his life.<br />

THIRD GENERATION.<br />

John, born 1665, and died Nov. 27, 1746, married Sarah<br />

Lombard, and had Elizabeth, 1690 ; Marv, 1692; John, 1696;<br />

Thomas, 1697; Hannah, 1700; Sarah, 1702; Patience, 1704;<br />

Martha, 1706; Jabez, July 16, 1708.<br />

Thomas, born 1672, married widow Sarah Butler, and had<br />

Gersham, 1700;<br />

Mercy, 1708.<br />

Thomas, 1703; Abigail, 1704; James, 1706;<br />

Ebenezer, born 1673, married Susannah Linnell, and had<br />

Mehitable ; Mercy ; Martha ; Samuel ; Ebenezer ; and David,<br />

born June 10, 1710, who married Marv Pope, <strong>of</strong> Sandwich,<br />

27, 1733.<br />

Benjamin, married Martha Crocker and had Temperance,<br />

1710; Melatiah, 1712 ; Barnabas, 1715 ; Silas, 1718; Zaccheus,<br />

1720; Seth, 1723.<br />

Jonathan, married Elizabeth , had Thankful, 1713 ;<br />

Joseph, 1716 ; Jonathan, 1718.<br />

Zaccheus, married Susanna Davis, and had Benjamin, 1744 ;<br />

Timothy, 1746 ; Barnabas, 1748.<br />

Capt. John Phinney, born 1696, and son <strong>of</strong> John and <strong>of</strong><br />

Sarah Lombard,' was the founder <strong>of</strong> the town <strong>of</strong> Gorham, in<br />

Maine. The second and third generation <strong>of</strong> our forefathers," be- ,.<br />

gan to feel that they were cramped in planting and pasture lands,<br />

and that they needed more territory for development. The first<br />

emigration from the Cape was in the easterly direction. Maine<br />

was a part <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts, and the undeveloped territory there<br />

was at the disposal <strong>of</strong> our people. The soldiers <strong>of</strong> the Indian<br />

wars felt that they had a claim upon this<br />

Massachusetts granted to the <strong>of</strong>ficers and soldiers <strong>of</strong> the Narragansett<br />

expedition, during Philip's war, and their heirs, a township<br />

six miles square in the Province <strong>of</strong> Maine, to each 120 persons<br />

whose claims should be established within four months <strong>of</strong> the<br />

passage <strong>of</strong> the act. Seven townships were laid out in pursuance<br />

<strong>of</strong> this act. The 7th town was named Gorham, in honor <strong>of</strong> Capt.<br />

John Gorham <strong>of</strong> Yarmouth, who commanded the Cape expedition
