BAKER.<br />

The Baker <strong>families</strong> in <strong>Barnstable</strong> and West <strong>Barnstable</strong>,<br />

are descendants <strong>of</strong> Rev. Nicholas Baker <strong>of</strong> Scituate ; the<br />

Hyannis <strong>families</strong> from Francis, who settled in Yarmouth.<br />

Rev. Nicholas Baker was a graduate <strong>of</strong> St. John's Col-<br />

lege, Cambridge, England, had his Batchelor's degree in<br />

1(331-2, and Master <strong>of</strong> Arts, 1635. His brother Nathaniel<br />

came over with him and both settled at Hingham in 1635.<br />

He received a share in the first division <strong>of</strong> house lots in that<br />

town. He afterwards became a large landholder in Hull.<br />

He was ordained in Scituate in 1660, where he was instrumental<br />

in effecting a reconciliation <strong>of</strong> the two churches<br />

which had held no conmiunication with each other for twenty-five<br />

years. Cotton Mather says : "Honest Nicholas Baker<br />

<strong>of</strong> Scituate, was so good a logician that he could oifer<br />

up to God a reasonable service, so good an arithmetician<br />

that he could wisely number his days, and so good an orator<br />

that he persuaded himself to be a Christian." He died<br />

Aug. 22, 1678, aged 67, <strong>of</strong> "that horror <strong>of</strong> mankind, and<br />

rein'oach <strong>of</strong> medicine, the stone," a memorable example <strong>of</strong><br />

patience under suffering.<br />

He was twice married. His first wife died at Scituate<br />

in 1661, and he married the following year his second wife<br />

Grace, who died in <strong>Barnstable</strong>, January 22, 1696-7. In his<br />

will dated 1678, he names his wife Grace, whom he appointed<br />

executrix, his brother Nathaniel Baker, his sons Samuel<br />

and Nicholas, and four daughters, namely, Mary, who married<br />

Stephen Vinal, 26th Feb., 1662; Elizabeth, married<br />

1664, John Vinal ; Sarah, married Josiah Litchfield, and<br />

Deborah married 1678, Israel Chittenden.<br />

Samuel, to whom his father gave an estate in Hull, Mas<br />

a freeman <strong>of</strong> that town in 1677. He married Fear, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Isaac Robinson, and had a family. May 12, 1687, he<br />

was admitted an inhabitant <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>, and the same year<br />

he and his wife were admitted to the <strong>Barnstable</strong> Church by<br />

dismission from the Church at Hull. The veneral)le Isaac<br />

Robinson resided a year or two at the close <strong>of</strong> his life with
