vis. She died Feb. 1782, aged 41, and he married second Desire<br />

Parker, daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel <strong>of</strong> West <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He died in<br />

Gorham July 24, 1819, aged 78.<br />

222. I. Mehitabel, July 21, 1762, married Crocker.<br />

223. II. Lothrop, Feb. 13, 1764. Of Col. Lothrop Lewis, Josiah<br />

Pierce, Esq., in his history <strong>of</strong> Gorham, says : "Probably<br />

no Gorham man ever stood higher in the estimation <strong>of</strong><br />

bis fellow-<strong>citizen</strong>s than the Hon. Lothrop Lewis. His mor-<br />

als were pure, obliging and courteous in manner, prudent in<br />

words and action, and distinguished for sound common<br />

sense. His mind was not brilliant, nor its operations rapid,<br />

but clear and persevering." When young he was much engaged<br />

in surveying lands. He was <strong>of</strong>ten a referee in important<br />

and diflflcult cases. He held many civil and military<br />

<strong>of</strong>lSees, and discharged their duties with fidelity. He was<br />

Colonel <strong>of</strong> a regiment <strong>of</strong> cavalry. Justice <strong>of</strong> the Peace,<br />

Deputy Sheriff, Selectman, Representative to the General<br />

Court, member <strong>of</strong> the board <strong>of</strong> war from 1812 to 1815, and<br />

land agent <strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong> Maine. He died in Bangor Oct.<br />

9, 1822, while in the discharge <strong>of</strong> his <strong>of</strong>ficial duties. Col.<br />

Lewis was twice married, first to Tabitha Longfellow, by<br />

whom he had Stephen L. 1795, and Mary 1796. His second<br />

wife was Wid. Mary J. Little, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Judge Prescott<br />

<strong>of</strong> Groton, Mass., by whom he had Annah, Catharine and<br />

Elizabeth.<br />

224. III. Sarah, Jan. 13, 1766, married Capt. Eben'r Peabody.<br />

225. IV. Annah, March 21, 1768, married John Darling.<br />

226. V. James, Aug. 21, 1770. Mr. James Lewis was a man<br />

<strong>of</strong> ability, character and property. About the year 1803 he<br />

became a convert to Methodism, and soon after an earnest<br />

and zealous preacher. His great fluency <strong>of</strong> speech, powerful<br />

voice, and evident sincerity, drew together large audiences.<br />

He travelled extensively, and when past eighty<br />

years <strong>of</strong> age visited his relatives at the Cape. To the last<br />

his physical and intellectual vigor remained almost unimpaired.<br />

He died in Gorham Aug. 20, 1855, aged 85, highly<br />

respected by men <strong>of</strong> every shade <strong>of</strong> religious belief.<br />

227. VI. Ansel, Feb. 2, 1773. A surveyor <strong>of</strong> lumber in Portland.<br />

228. VII. George, March 28, 1775. He was a farmer at<br />

Bridgton, Me., and major in the militia.<br />
