101. III. Joseph, J graduate <strong>of</strong> Harvard College 1724, and for<br />

more than sixty years taught school in <strong>Barnstable</strong>. The<br />

town was divided into four districts, and he taught alternately<br />

in each. He studied theology, and preached on the south<br />

side <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong> during the winters <strong>of</strong> 1727-8, and 9.<br />

For his services the first winter he had £5, 2s the amount assessed<br />

on the South Sea people,, and on the 3d £10. Thereafter<br />

he does not appear to have preached. He was learned,<br />

a good neighbor and a sincere Christian ; but wanting in<br />

energy <strong>of</strong> character, he never exerted much influence. In<br />

his old age he married Martha Davis, a twin daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

1731, had no children. He died Feb.<br />

102. IV. Ebenezer, 9th Aug. 1706. He does not appear to<br />

have married. In his will dated 22d Aug. 1752, he is called<br />

3d, and names his brothers Samuel and Joseph, and his sis-<br />

ters Hannah Bacon and Thankful Lewis. He appoints his<br />

kinsmen, Robert Davis and Jonathan Lewis, his executors.<br />

103. V. Thankful, 22d Jan. 1708.<br />

104. VI. Hannah, 1st July,, 1710, married 1738, Oris Bacon,<br />

five years younger than herself, and had no issue.<br />

James Lewes, son <strong>of</strong> Lieut. James, (5) born 3d June,<br />

1664, married Nov. 1698, Elizabeth Lothrop, 2d, Mercey Sturgis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Yarmouth. She died Dec. 7, 1745, aged 64. He died June<br />

18, 1748, ag«d 84. In his will dated March 25, 1747, proved<br />

June 29, 1748, he names his daughter Mary Dunham, wife <strong>of</strong><br />

Gideon ; his grand-daughters Susanna and Elizabeth, daughters<br />

<strong>of</strong> his son James, deceased, and his, son Jonathan, to whom he<br />

gives nearly all <strong>of</strong> his estate, apprised at only £2,300,09, old<br />

tenor. He names his nephew Nathan Lewis. As five are not<br />

named in the father's will it is probable they died young.<br />

105. I. Mary, 16th Aug. 1700, married Gideon Dunham.<br />

106. II. Elizabeth, 8th May, 1702. Not named in her father's<br />

will.<br />

107. III. James, 9th July, 1704, probably married Abigail<br />

Taylor <strong>of</strong> Yarmouth March 5, 1727, and had two daughters,<br />

Susanna and Eliz3,beth. He was a mariner and died in 1730,<br />

when he was called 4th, leaving an estate apprised at £150.<br />

108. IV. Barnabas, 17th March, 1706, not named in father's<br />

will.
